ANTIQUE FRENCH MARRIAGE ARMOIRE
This auction is for a most unusual antique armoire from Normandy. Most probably from the Caux region. The carving on this piece indicates that it was made in the provinces by a local woodworker. Everything about this stunning piece shows that it was entirely hand done and not for the mass market. It was most probably made between 1750 and 1850. All the joinery is double doved or butterfly. It is made of solid wood except for the interior of the dome top and the back. It was made. As was typical of the day, as a knockdown. The doors, base, back and dome top are all separate pieces. The separate dove carving indicates that this was a marriage armoire given as a dowry piece. Most were expertly done but this has all the earmarks of one made perhaps by the father of the bride. Made in his own wood workshop. A recent addition to the piece is the ... moreadditional cut in the doors doors which allow them to completely foldaway so that the piece can be used as an entertainment unit without the encumbrance of traditional doors which can only partially be.opened. This was done professionally and is imperceptible when the doors are closed. The original white painted finish must have been touched up at some time but it still retains its original patina. All hardware original to the piece. Two original extra shelves are included. Not pictured. It ships knockdown. The right door is warped but it still closes. Sizes: 50" wide. 28" deep, 88" high.

This is a very nice 3 door wardrobe circa 1900. Made in France or Possibly Italy as a lot of there furniture were very similar. The condition is very good. Its pollard oak and walnut with satinwood marquetry inlay to each door to the side, as well as rosewood inlay. At some time to the back has had wood worm. It looks treated, but we have also treated it as well. lt comes in several part so its easy to transport. To the base it has brass feet and also to the top brass cups. The center has a drawer to the base. The the rest is all hanging space as well as the sides. The mirror is the original one which shows some specks with age. Measurements are 76 wide.83 high, 24 deep. We have the 3 keys for each door.

This is a beautiful and stunning piece. A 1790-1800 French Wedding Armoire. Or Bridal Trousseau Armoire. This is a large piece, exceptional handcrafted carving. The sides and back are pine, the front, top, legs and doors are oak. Beautiful example of early French artistry in wood. Stunning patina in a reddish darkish brown which can only be attained with age. A father would have several pieces made for his daughter so that she could save not only her bridal clothes. But her gorgeous linens as well in these cabinets. These were all handmade in France. A daughter was to accumulate many sets of linens for her future wedding. Those with wealth accumulated dozens of sheets, tablecloths, linens for the furniture so one needed quite a bit of storage. The photos were primarily taken in full sunlight. Genuine French country antique. Wonderful rich patina with a clear wax finish. I purchased this cabinet in France many years ago and I have been using it for storage in an unfitted kitchen. I was told it was an old food cabinet. Reluctantly for sale due to kitchen remodel and shortage of space! The doors. Sides and front are all solid oak. There are splits on the left side of the cabinet. As seen in the pictures, due to contraction and expansion over the years with humidity changes. There are other hairline cracks as one would expect in a piece this size and age but it just adds to the rustic charm. Please look at the pictures carefully. The interior is lighter in color and has 3 adjustable newer pine shelves that sit in the wood grooves with metal braces. The bottom of the cabinet looks newer than the main body. This imposing Louis Philippe Armoire is crafted in solid oak. The Armoire comes completely flat and can be assembled in about 20 minutes. The armoire stands on ogee scroll feet and a cut out plinth. To the inside there are 3 shelves. One with a full width drawer and one having 3 drawers below it. The middle drawer has a lock but no key so I can put a button knob on this one if required. All this is enclosed with a pair of panel doors complete with decorative carving and molding. The left hand door is held shut with a simple sprung catch. Antique 19th century French Armoire from the Charente - Walnut - to restore - NR
This auction is for a 19th century French armoire for restoration. The armoire is made of what I believe to be walnut. I purchased this at an antique shop near Cognac in the Charente department of France about 10 years ago and had it shipped to the US as part of a load of inventory for an antique shop(since closed) that was located in Connecticut. It was a project piece that I intended to restore and then sell. Unfortunately. I never had the time to tackle this so I am putting this up for sale to someone who has the time and skill to restore this to its former glory(we used to sell these in restored condition anywhere between $6K& $12k) The photos tell do the best job of describing the condition- to summarize, there is no back(it was a piece of plywood when purchased and removed pending restoration) the crown and top(as well as the bottom) ... moreare missing and will need to be rebuilt, there is no lock on the doors and door on the right has has a slight warp to it(that someone has corrected by putting a piece of wood into the opening to make it close completely) the spanner beneath the doors was replaced at sometime with what appears to be matching wood but not carved to match the rest of the case, the left side is complete but has come out of mortise on the front column and will need to be reattached, finally, the right side bottom spanner is missing the bottom of the curved carved piece(see a photo of the left side bottom to get an idea of what is missing) If you have done this type of restoration project before then you know what is involved and how nice this will be when complete- it's a great project for someone with some skill and patience. Height from top to bottom is 84" Depth from front to back is 21.25" width is about 52" The doors are 48" wide by 71" high. The escutcheons measure 19" high by 1.75" wide. Due to the size. Here is a fabulous early 19th century French wardrobe with original hinges and lovely carving across the top above the doors including raised carved applique date of 1835. Imported to Charleston from France by it's current owner after he purchased it at a high end antiques store in Normandy. The finish particularly on the front doors is nice with lovely wood grains and the original long metal hinges holding the doors in place. It stands 78 inches tall and measures 60 inches wide and 28 inches deep front to back at the widest points on it's bonnet. The outside of the closet itself measures closer to 54 inches wide and 26 inches from the front of the doors back to the wall. LOUIS XV - STYLE FRENCH ARMOIRE - 1890-1910 Found by J Peterman
I wonder what wonderful tales it could tell us if only. Where its life began. We cannot say for certain, however, this armoire was said to have come from France before finding it's way to the U.S. and being drafted into service by the legendary retailer, Peterman, as a display cabinet. When we first saw it, it had rather indecorously been filled with piles of Peterman clothing in the midst of a shopping frenzy when they closed their stores years ago. We rescued it and brought it home to become a part of our eclectic collection of furnishings. It has taken a few re-locations in its stead since, but, alas, we're streamlining and must pass it one to someone else who will add new pages to it's story. As do the drawer front and front legs. It appears to be crafted of walnut and shines beautifully with a little polish. It has no key however the lock mechanism is intact and functional. While it does evidence the wear and tear of age, as do all of us that have experienced life to the fullest, it is still a lovely addition to any room and still quite capable of doing it's job of holding other treasures. It has mountings for a shelves(the latter not included as it wasn't when we bought it. There are some areas of wear on the mirrors(see photo) but these neither detract nor interfere with the mirrors' function, in fact, depending upon one's age, this can be an advantage. The top is completely closed and serves as a great place for display things. hats, florals, etc. Previous owner added supports to crown that are not visible unless you are looking down on the piece from above. I do believe that it is original. Measurements are 96" Tall 50" wide 19 inches deep. There is a drawer at the bottom and three shelves. It is sturdy. I see no structural defects. There is some fading and the normal wear you would expect from a piece this old. The mirror glass is the original My beloved Great Aunt Ruth passed at 102. Aunt Ruth lived each year to the fullest! Exceptional French Empire Gilt& Patinated Bronze Mounted Mahogany Armoire Probably c. 1880-1910 Item# 130408PXG26 This rare and exciting work of art from the last quarter of the 19th Century is exceptional in every way. An incredible accomplishment. The foundry work executed in this piece is above reproach- each gilt bronze mount is hand chased to the highest quality, mercury gilded and of outstanding detail. An angular and commanding work, the Armoire is surmounted by a triangular crest that is removable from the body with two dowels on either side- this is flanked by a pair of carved mahogany(replaced) finials. Beneath the projecting crown molding, an incredible gilt bronze mount of an angel riding through ocean waves in a cornucopia pulled along by swans while leaving behind a trail of shells is simply stunning. Flanking this on either ... moreside are opposing gilt bronze solider masks. The top is removable. Lifting off of large steel screws inside of the armoire to allow the door to be lifted from it's hinges for easier transportation. On either side of the door, pedestaled on large tapered columns rest large and highly impressive patinated and gilt bronze Classical female heads with bowed ribbon holding her hair back. These are the largest mounts of flawless execution we've seen on a piece from this period, each a stunning work of art in it's own merit. A hand filed steel screw secures each head to the case. Beneath the column, intense gilded Lion Paw's in the Regency manner complete the form. The arched door swings open with use of the original key. Revealing a golden oak interior of four shelves and a single locking drawer. This drawer is hand dovetailed with solid oak secondary woods, when removed revealing an illegible signature in period script along the dust board. Affixed to the top of the armoire on the inside is an old bill of lading from Lawsonia Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, noting it's sale of an"Exist.
