We purchased this machine from a person who does not sew. We have found that the Wilcox and Gibbs was probably the most successful of the chain-stitching sewing machines. The"Automatic" was produced continuously unchanged form from 1876 to c.1950. Located in New York City. The company began production in 1858. The company was founded by James Gibbs, and James Willcox. These machines used a single thread to form chain-stitch seams so there is NO bobbin needed. The machines were easy to use and quieter than the lockstitch machines; they were also much less expensive. If you collect sewing machines or just want to display in your home then this is your chance to get one. This machine comes with. Its original manual or book and even some spare needles. I have found some patent dates on it, Nov 22, 1887-March 28, 1882 and August 28, 1894 and has a serial number of A696165. The following is list of things I have found might need attention? This is a antique 1902 Willcox Gibbs industrial sewing machine Ser. No. A733982 that I have restored. All old paint was removed and parts cleaned then inspected and found in good condition. I painted it black and after new decals where put on. Clear paint was sprayed on to seal and protect the new decals. The machine sews a good stitch and works easy. All nickel plated parts where polished. It has some pitting on the cloth that I clean and polished over. it looks good and works fine. Question welcome.

For sale this great antique Willcox-Gibbs cast iron sewing machine made in the USA. This machine is fastened to a solid wooden board base about 14 inches by 10 inches. And about 1 inch thick. It has a side mounted electric Continental Motor uses 110 volts 4.0 amps, and is marked as being model#68. The body of this machine is a round wheel shape, and the motor is connected to a 3 plug socket. Black painted with gold leaf filigree detailing. Machine is about 10 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 9 inches tall. This machine is patented in the USA on March 28, 1882, April 17, 1883, November 22, 1887, February 12,19,26 of 1889, and August 28,1894. Also patented in Great Britain and France. Machine is in good to very good overall condition, showing a fair amount of paint wear, chipping from long usage, handling, and storage. These Schmetz needles have the groove all the way up the shaft as required for the machine to slide over the pin in the needle bar. It will fit the older glass tension machine. The automatic and the later electric chain stitch machines. Mirror smooth Schmetz needles glide through fabric and are superior to the original Willcox& Gibbs needles with a dull finish that does not penetrate all fabrics smoothly. Over the years I have used both original and Schmetz needles in my Willcox& Gibbs machines and discovered the problem of using dull finish needles. Especially on some fabrics and layers. Old/Antique/Vintage-Iron- WILLCOX and GIBBS S. M. CO. Sewing Machine with Westinghouse electric motor in unrestored original condition. Very few cracks. Chips and nicks but no dents. Paint is good overall condtion but paint is rubbed out at the Willcox name decoration. Petal has small chips and nicks from normal use. Cords still functions but is somewhat dried out and probably should be replaced. Sewing machine still works good and is complete but could use some general maintenance. Wetinghouse motor still runs strong and is in total control from it's petal, operating smoothly and quietly. The carrying case is sturdy and strong and still looks great. The material outside is in great shape for it's age but inside has a portion of materal rubbed out by the motor being taken in and out. This is an OriginalTucker for the Willcox& Gibbs Automatic Sewing Machine. This piece has the W&G seal stamped on it with double seal with HC Goodrich Chicago IL. Last Pat date Aug 18, 1868. Part is complete. This piece looks well used but would clean up well with a little steel wool, I would leave as is as it reflects its age. There is NO rust, just aged metal, dirt and dust. This part is usable as is and is in beautiful shape for its age, its almost 150 years old! This company has been in business since 1859. The Automatic Sewing machine was first made in 1860 and made up till at least 1900. There is no box but I will include a COPY of the original instructions for the Improved Tucker, they work the same. Willcox & Gibbs collectible, antique, sewing machine in great shape
Here's a fine example of the famous Willcox& Gibbs chain stitch sewing machine. These machines are reported to be the most sought after collectible machine there is. This particular one was made around the turn of the century so for a 110 year old machine. It's in great condition. The chrome still looks outstanding and it sews very well as you can see in the sample. This one looks to be original- restore. Repaint, re-letter if you want- but it looks good enough in my opinion to be added to your collection as is. Not a lot more I can say about these except if you're not familiar with them you should do some searches on the web and read all about them.

Decals are intact with minimal loss. Shiny metal(polished nickel? on platten and flywheel is clean. No apparent oxidation. Case is separating at one corner. But otherwise in good condition. Three boxes contain many small attachments. Knobs, and intricate parts. Small black box is original box for the light but now holding attachments. Pedal is stored in a black flannel bag. Pack of needles pinned to old fabric looks original to the machine. Pedal is in same fine condition as the machine. Power cords on machine and pedal seem to be modern replacements. C1890 Willcox & Gibbs New York Deposee Industrial Hat Making Sewing Machine
This is one of the nicest preserved examples of the Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Machine Company of New York industrial grade sewing machines used at the former William Knowlton& Sons hat manufactory once located in West Upton. Massachusetts. Probably circa 1880- 1908, it was used used to sew braid in the hat making process. The machine has been preserved for many years in a layer of light grease. It will need to be cleaned and then lubricated to bring to full use again but it has never been allowed to rust. It measures 9" X 9" plus it has the original underside securing weight for attaching to a workbench. This is a great opportunity to own one of the key manufacturing components of the New England Industrial Revolution, particularly relating to the textile industry. Welcome Purchased at an estate sale. When dissassembling for packing I broke off the screw(last photo) that is on the end of the bar that holds each end toghether. I could not find any other damage to the base. But it could use a new paint job. The machine and wood cabinet top are also being sold. Due to shipping and collectors only needing parts I'm selling the wood cabinet and machine separate. The machine that was on this base is Serial# A 662405 I went to a web site to find the manufactured date and it was anywhere from 1898 to 1921 and the middle of these dates would put it around 1909. The base is in Very Good Condition for its age. It still works great. The pedal attached to a rod moves the wheel properly. The base has some paint loss and rust from age and normal use. The patent date indicated on the wheel is Jan. 25. 1870 The Stand measures approx. 28" high by 22" wide and 16 1/2" depth. The foot pedal measures 12" by 11 1/2" This piece would make a great base for a glass top table. It would be wonderful addition. Ruffler, Tuckmarker, corder, Binder, Braider, edgestitcher, cutting gauge, felled seam, setting needle. etc etc. it is in great shape except the middle page is loose as it has worked free from the 2 staples that bind this together are rusty. This auction is for a very clean WILLCOX& GIBBS cast iron table top sewing machine with hand crank option, New York-Paris-London This machine is in very nice condition retaining most of the gold letting and decoration, the handle also looks original. All moving parts appear to operating, the hand crank is a stiff, but spinning. The sewing deck is straight and clean with some ware expected, there is a needle intact, the chrome still holds a bit of a shine. The earliest patent date looks like 1882, and the last 1894. Please ask questions before purchasing the item, we will assist best we can.
