The booklet is soft covered and filled with a great deal of very useful information about thread winders. There is a chapter on the history of thread winders and other chapters deal with the various materials that were used to make them; the pitfalls and care and conservation. Fab Antique Canton Snowflake Mother Of Pearl Thread Winder * Circa 1830
Winder Antique Snowflake MOP Thread Winder Chinese* Circa 1820-30 This gorgeous winder is carved of mother of pearl in a snowflake or flower shape. The design had deep carving rather than the usual etching and each of the lobes on both sides is engraved with a flowing leaf design. This pattern is quite unusual. The center on one side has a figure in a Ninja style pose and the other has a floral design. The condition is excellent with no chips. Cracks or other damage. It measures 2" in diameter at the widest point. It was made in China(Canton) for the English market and dates to the early 19th century. Several winders in this style are shown on p. 22 of Diane Pelham Burns excellent book Thread Winders. A Collector's Guide. It is decorated with a pierced floral style surrounding a script monogram( P.H. It measures 2 1/8" by 1 1/4" and was made to hold multiple colors of silk thread. It could well have been carved in China but would have been made for export to England. It was a special order for the lady whose initials were incorporated into the design. RARE C 1850 Victorian Tunbridge Ware Reel / Silk Thread Winder Spool Stickwork
A RARE Tunbridge Ware Stickwork Thread Reel Or Thread Winder On Page 112 Of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools And Embroideries she shows a picture with"rare" Tunbridge ware reels from a sewing box thought to have been made to commemorate the birth of Queen Victoria's first son in 1841. The picture shows reels looking like this one. Reels for winding thread are so rare that Ms. Taunton's book on sewing tools only references them three times. In 2 of the referenes she uses the word"rare. In the third reference she notes that"Tunbridge ware reel holders are rarely found individually. This lovely reel has a different stickware pattern at each end. Both are lovely. This reel is 7/8" tall and is 1" across. From Tunbridge Wells in Kent It is in excellent antique condition. There is no loss ... moreof any of the wooden pieces. There are some scratches to the finish which show up under magnification. We purchased this on Portobello Road in London many years ago and put it into our personal collection. We liked the fact that the stickware design is different on each side. About Tunbridge Ware- Tunbridge Wells in Kent started attracting tourists as early as the 17th century. When travelers came to partake of the curative powers of its spring waters. By the end of the 17th century"curious wooden wares" were sold in Tunbridge shops. About 1830 craftsmen from Tunbridge discovered a new way of decorating their wares. Bunches of wooden sticks were glued together lengthwise. When they dried, they were cut in slices and glued onto paper before being veneered on to a wooden surface. From then on, Tunbridge craftsmen produced a great variety of designs- each unique as no single one could be reproduced a second time. A variation appeared in the 1860s- stickwork. Instead of slicing the wood horizontally, it was turned on a lathe and the patterns ran lengthwise. ANTIQUE MOTHER OF PEARL THREAD WINDER This is a lovely Chinese mother of pearl gaming counter or thread winder. It is engraved with a moth in foliage on one side. And a star flower in foliage on the other. It has small indentations which were used for holding the thread. I have shown it with a cent for scale. I have been trying to research the significance of the moth, apart from it's importance like the butterfly in representing rebirth) In this case it could just be that the silk moth was so revered because of the silk, the secret of how to produce it was kept for many years. Evidence of silk production in China, and trade with other countries, goes back at least 3000 years and possibly 6000. What better pattern to be on a silk winder! These winders were often originally created as games counters. But soon found another use by Georgian ... moreladies as winders for small amounts of silk and kept in their workboxes. For sale is a late 19th century/ early 20th century sewing lot consisting of from the top a thread winder/needle case. A thread counter, a sterling hem marker, and 2 signed clip hemmers. The 18th century thread winder/needle case measures 2 1/8" high and could hold 3 different color threads. As the picture shows, the top removes for the needle case. Next is the magnifying thread counter. This measures 2" by 1 1/2" by 1/2" when closed. On one side is HH mark and is in used condition. The magnifying glass is in good condition. The top of the three hemmers is sterling and measures 4 1/2" long. It has a heart on the top which can be initialed. It has Sterling in the heart on both sides. This hemmer marks up to a 3" hem and is in very good condition. Finally, the two 20th century aluminum hemmers are signed on both ... moresides:CHADWICK MEASURE CLIP HEMMERS. The designs are then carved down into the lacquer. Before carving. It could take months to build up the proper thickness of lacquer and for it to cure properly. A woman in a boat below a peach tree is carved on one side and a man in flowing robes is on the other. It's wonderfully smooth and tactile. A small hole has been drilled in the top. Winder23 Antique Solid 14 Kt Gold Thread Winder Dutch* Circa 1870-80 This little antique silk winder is solid 14 Kt gold with hand engraved details on both sides. It is stamped with the oak leaf hallmark used in the Netherlands for 14 Kt gold from 1853-1905. It also has the maker's mark for P. F. Manikus(Manikus& Verhoef) They used this mark from 1867-1908 and worked in Arnhem. The winder is in the Beidermeier style and dates to c. 1870-80. The condition is excellent with no dents or damage and it measures 1 1/8" across when measuring from point to point. It weighs 1.2 grams. Finely grained wood and is decorated with handpainted birds, different on each side. One is a robin. And I'm not sure about the other. It measures 2 1/2" across when measuring from point to point. It is in excellent condition with no chips. Cracks or other damage. There is a shallow nick in the varnish on one side and a flat spot on the other.
