It is carved in the shape of a tower- it was probably carved from Lindenwood. The top of the tower resembles the Prussian crown. The outside of the little tower is extensively carved and decorated with small flowers. This thimble holder holds an unusual brass thimble that is decorated with the Iron Cross and the WWI slogan. Gott Mit Uns" which means, God with us" as well as the date 1914. This inscription is all in relief. Solid chunk of fossil material that I purchased several years ago. It originally came from Siberia. The design features a couple of butterfly fish, a seahorse, a lobster, and some seashells. There is also a bit of seaweed incorporated into the carving, and a nice starfish on top of the thimble. This is a carefully carved one of a kind, nicely polished and displays well. It measures a hair over 1 inch tall and the opening is about 5/8 of an inch in diameter. My signature and the date are inscribed on the inner rim. Antique solid silver thimble made by Charles Horner of Northgate, Halifax for John Thompson and Sons of 41 Old Street, London. It features traditional punched dot/ honeycomb decoration to the top and main part of the shaft with a band of chasing and wriggle work below. At the bottom is faceted rim which adds to the overall appeal. John Thompson& Sons were manufacturers and retailers of jewellery. However. They bought in thimbles from Charles Horner as this was a specialist area of silversmith production. The JT&S mark seems to appear on thimbles from about 1880 to 1919. This thimble is illustrated as Horner’s design 213 in their price list of the period and described as‘Plain top. We have on offer this Victorian silver thimble. It is hallmarked for Birmingham 1878-79 as well as silver. The makers mark is J.P. The measurements are appr. 22.40mm(0.882' by 17.35mm(0.683' at its widest part.
