Johann Hill, an Austrian wood carver, perhaps not the discoverer but some one astute enough to observe an upcoming trend, introduced Vegetable Ivory at the 1862 Universal Expo in Paris. America and England began production of the buttons right away. Some production had already been going on, but on a small scale. France did not get into the trade until the 1870's. The trade name became Vegetable Ivory to distinguish it from tusk ivory. Also it was used as a substitute for the same when it was discovered to be cheap and plentiful. Decline in production didn't come until the 1920's when plastics became more economical. By the 1940's few Vegetable Ivory buttons were made. Import duties. The casein button exhibits crazing/cracking typical of such buttons and measures 3/4" across. Girl Scout 1930s "Vegetable Ivory" Uniform Buttons (10) with 1948 FDC
Here is a lot that contains 10 of the"vegetable ivory" Girl Scout buttons that were introduced for the uniforms by the spring of 1931. I believe they have faded over the years but if you have a vintage uniform needing a button(or 10) These have the nice aged patina. The First Day Cover commemorated the 1948 Juliette Gordon Low. Found of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. stamp, that was issued October 29, 1948. FDC is neatly type-addressed and has"ArtM 976" written in the lower right corner of the reverse of the envelope(ArtM is Artmaster, the company that designed and issued the FDC and 976 is the stamp catalog number for the stamp- this was an organizing notation for the original owner) Very nice for the Girl Scout collector.

Vintage Antique Vegetable Ivory Buttons-Diminutive- Sets- Colors-70 Pieces (15)
I love vegetable ivory buttons. But if I kept everything I loved.well, I guess I would have to live in a tent in my yard to make room for stuff, so these buttons are offered to you. I was totally surprised to find these buttons among a huge lot I purchased at an auction. I am not sure that the blue ones, which measure 3/8" in diameter, are vegetable ivory but since the size kind of goes along with the rest of them, I am including them in this lot. The other sets of buttons measure 7/16" in diameter. All the buttons in the lot are shank style, and each type is a set of 15 for a total of 60 buttons. When I see the photos, I see the color variation in the ones with the carved black design on top and I will attempt to assemble a set of them which more closely match. Condition is very good. Considering age, but expect some slight color ... morevariations consistent with material and age. The lot contains 1 ounce prior to packaging. I do combine shipping so if you win more than one lot please wait for an invoice. As the lots I sell vary quite a bit in weight. Vegetable Ivory Buttons - Vintage Antique Button Lot-Sets - 134 Buttons (#99F)
Included in this large lot of buttons are quite a few sets and some with very pretty impressed designs. There are some great diminutive sized sets in this lot which are carved and dyed. This would be great for a seamstress or costumer. Re-enactors such as those participating in organizations such as SCA, Renaissance festival goers, and so on. There will be some minor color differences among the dyed sets as is consistent with age, and in some there is no difference at all. There are no severely damaged buttons- there are a couple of minor cracks in the two toned green and natural sew through buttons but I just couldn't bear to discard them.
