Tried to find out about this little box. I was told by an antique Dealer it was a"travel sewing kit' and would be from"the early to mid 1850's" Showed to to several locations and they all pretty much agreed. Makes sense. The third and fourth picture shows the black band which would hold the needles. Too small to accept a manicure set. Anyway, measures out 4 1/2" X 2 7/8" and 1" high. Just acquired out of a Private estate. We are able to offer this original ~ 1809 STERLING SILVER HINGED SEWING THREAD BOX ~. I believe that this would have original been designed to carry several different colors of spool thread inside, and you would thread the color you are using through the hole. Could have held a thimble and other small tools as well. It is hallmarked on the lid, base and side. The maker is THOMAS PHIPPS& EDWARD ROBINSON from London, and it has the London ~O~ date mark, for the year 1809. The maker's mark is T.P and below that E.R all inside of a four leaf clover type shape. It has a hinged top and a hinged clip on the side. The hinged clip on the side may be for a chatelain, although we are not certain. This little sewing box measures 2 inches across by 1 1/4 inches tall" in the closed position" and ... moreis fairly heavy, for its size, weighing 58 grams. It is in very good, all original condition with no damage or repairs. It does show some expected wear to the sterling surface, as we did not attempt to polish it. HUGE 13 1/4" LONG ENGLISH STERLING SEWING CHATELAINE no RESERVE
PICTURES SHOW DETAILS! Up for your consideration is this INCREDIBLE. HUGE SEWING CHATELAINE from the 2nd half of the 1800s to the early first 10 years of the 1900s. I purchased it at a private New York estate. It has one original piece hanging from it. Which is the thimble holder. It has the same bird& flower motif, and the same maker's initials of SM, the LION and the QUEEN'S HEAD on it. It also has its original. Worn, purple velvet in it. The other marks on the back of the chatelaine is the STANDING LION 1st. A LEOPARD'S HEAD 2nd, a large S with a LINE going through the middle of it, and the QUEEN'S HEAD. I could not find out who SM is. But I believe this piece dates from 1873. The pin cushion has almost all the pins still in it. Which is a rare find.I see no markings on it at all, but it has a nice look to it, and also ... morelooks around the same period. The scissor holder has the initial S*B for the maker. And has the Anchor, Lion and a small letter d, which means it's from Birmingham, and dates to 1904. The scissors that go in it has the same initials. S*B, and has the Anchor, Lion and the small letter e, which is 1905. The blade of the scissors says"SHEFFIELD" Which is not sterling, and it doesn't close all the way. I don't know why. And I'm not touching it. The top is STERLING. The long round file with the silver top does not match at all. And has a fancy initial on each side. This chatelaine measures from the top to the bottom of the scissor holder. 13 3/8" The whole piece weighs 5.5 ounces. But that includes everything. I'm opening this amazing sewing. It is in the form of a book and covered with brown leather. The sides are gold embossed with scrolls. Birds, fountains and decorative borders. The'spine' is embossed'Lady's Companion' The interior is lined with velvet and printed paper(all original) The leather is in excellent overall condition. Much better than usually seen. The top is gold stamped with the maker or retailer's name, I. Bagshaw, 96 Church Street, Liverpool" It's 4 1/8" tall. 3 1/8" wide and 1 7/8" deep. Some in this style are shown on p. 92 of of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools. The sterling silver tools(tested) include a ... morethimble. A tape measure, a propelling pencil and a sterling topped perfume bottle. Also included are steel scissors, steel tweezers/earspoon, steel seam knife a spool and a packet of needles. The last two items are in the'secret drawer' below the thimble rest. The steel tools are held in a leather needle book which has moth damage to the wool needle page. The silver tape measure has a silk tape marked in inches and works well to wind in back in. The thimble has an applied band and wriggle work engraving. It has 3 tiny needle holes but you have to look for them. The condition is otherwise excellent. It's about an American size 9(16 mm diameter opening) The little scissors(3 5/8" long) have tight blades and sharp points and cut very well. The propelling pencil works well(twists out the lead) and it holds a 0.7 mm lead. It is stamped with the maker's name. Sampson Mordan. The cut glass perfume bottle has the original glass stopper, a sterling top and has no chips or cracks. The other tools are also in great shape with no damage. It unscrews in the middle and inside is a little sewing kit with spools over a needle case capped by a thimble. The thimble is sterling silver and has the sterling hallmarks for London 1892. It also has the maker's mark for John Troup. It has been made into a chatelaine and fitted with a bone* finger ring with varigated thread. The thimble is in excellent crisp condition with no holes or other damage. The egg has a couple of rim nicks on the top edge. But no other damage. It measures 2" long and screws together securely. The silk and finger ring are solid and sturdy. This item is made of bone from a domestic cow(bovine) and not from an endangered species. A very nice man, so amazingly accomplished and talented. I believe the wood to be rosewood. It measures 3.75" diameter at the base x 3.25" to top of cushion(9.5cms x 8.3cms) The cushion is covered with velvet and the interior is lined with the same. Sewing Lot: Thread Counter, Thread winder/needle case, Sterling Hem Marker, etc.
For sale is a late 19th century/ early 20th century sewing lot consisting of from the top a thread winder/needle case. A thread counter, a sterling hem marker, and 2 signed clip hemmers. The 18th century thread winder/needle case measures 2 1/8" high and could hold 3 different color threads. As the picture shows, the top removes for the needle case. Next is the magnifying thread counter. This measures 2" by 1 1/2" by 1/2" when closed. On one side is HH mark and is in used condition. The magnifying glass is in good condition. The top of the three hemmers is sterling and measures 4 1/2" long. It has a heart on the top which can be initialed. It has Sterling in the heart on both sides. This hemmer marks up to a 3" hem and is in very good condition. Finally, the two 20th century aluminum hemmers are signed on both ... moresides:CHADWICK MEASURE CLIP HEMMERS. They measure 4" long and both measure up to 3" hems. These clip onto the bottom of the hem for measuring. These also are in very good condition. They are different colors as the pictures show. Antique Sterling Silver Knife Signed Theodore Foster& Bros. Marked"F&B" and"Sterling" on the handle. Made by Theodore W. Foster and Bros. This firm opened in 1880 in Providence. RI. They used several names and markings over time, but they used to F&B marking from 1898 to 1951, when they went out of business. Judging from the style of this piece I would say that it's from the earlier end of their production. Probably the 1920's at the latest. I'm not sure if it's a sewing knife. Or a vanity knife because F&B made so many different kinds of items. It's in excellent condition with plenty of age patina and very little wear. It measures about 5 in. long overall.
