BRASS DROP FOUNT FOR OIL LAMP, MARITIME OR RAILROAD
Vintage drop fount for bottom-loading oil lamp. All brass construction. Some tarnish and patina. However very clean inside and in overall very good condition. Does not appear to have ever been filled with oil. Fitted with Simplex burner which used a 3/4" flat wick(not included) Wick adjuster knob is marked E. Miller& Co, Made in U.S.A. Top of burner is slightly bent. No maker markings on fount itself. Threaded collar where burner screws in measures 1-1/4" diameter. Three spring clips along side of fount held burner in place inside of lamp. All three are securely attached. Small brass filler cap is in place. Bottom bell measures 6" in diameter. Top of fount measures 4" in diameter. Height of fount is(not including burner) is approximately 3-1/4" Height of portion that would fit inside the lamp is around 2-1/4" ... moreProbably used in a maritime rather than railroad lamp. However I am cross listing in the railroad lamp category as it could have been used in a navigation lamp on or about a railroad bridge. While this fount looks similar to the type used in Adlake Santa Fe and No. 63 railroad switch lamps. This is way too large and won't fit in those lamps. Perko De-lite Bow Light, brass maritime oil lamp
Weather-bronzed’ Perko De-lite Bow lantern. Oil-burning allbrass lamp with glass lens, 12.25” tall. This model was carried for quite along time by Perkins Marine, This particular lamp was made in the late 1930s(1934 and earlier models has two brass safety bars protecting the lens, whichwas removed from all models by 1939, per the Perko catalogs) Based on estimatesof the Perko stamp in back, it may have been made in the 1940s– 50s. The oil fount was drilled out and electrified. And promptlyrestored to oil burning capability once I acquired it over two years ago. Alsorepaired was lower brass band that holds the lens in place. Other damage fromits years of use including a wire hole in the top and some twisted metal by thevent holes in the back. Page scans are from the 1939 Perko Catalog.

Lantern measures 20" tall with handle extended up. The wick key is attached to side and wick turn knob works good. No broken glass on paynes and side door works good. Rare Wm. Porter Brass Maritime Marine Steamboat Binnacle Whale Oil Lamp Lantern
Just out of a local house is this Rare antique William Porter's Son and Co. binnacle lamp. The lamp is all brass and has a half round design. It is fitted with its original whale oil burner. These were made and advertised for use in steamboats of the period. The lamp measures 9 1/2 inches tall and 6 inches wide. The front measures 6 7/8 inches tall and 6 inches wide. It is in excellent condition for its age with only some lines in the brass cap on top and the font looks like it may have leaked. See photos. The lamp is nicely marked with the makers tag of William Porter's Son and Co. 194 Water Street New York. A similar example is pictured in William Porter's and Sons 1891 catalog and lists this one as the large size model. It's in excellent shape and can be polished if need be, however I don't suggest it. It comes with a gimbal mount for leveling the lamp while boating. An original solid brass oil lantern made by BULPITT& SONS BIRMINGHAM 1940 Embossed on the chimney of the lantern. F ully functional. Heavy gauge brass lantern complete with all its original parts. Used aboard a ship as a bulkhead. Cabin/wardroom lamp. Stands 16" high. 20" high with the handle upright, 8 1/2" wide x 6" deep. The unit has a three sided glass face. With a right side access door. The burner is made to come out to fill. It also has a key that the wick can be put up or down without opening the door. The chimney also opens up the top section for cleaning or service. Interesting articulated swivel ring on the downhaul bail prevents lamp stressing while the vessel is rolling. Made of brass and iron. A gimbal allows something that contains liquid to self level in a situation such as a ship where the floor would not remain horizontal, something you would appreciate especially with a lamp holding flammable fuel. There is an old wick coming out of the burner side, and a thumbscrew that will open the filling space. The gimbal is made of iron, a gracefully curved heavy bar that would have been placed into a hole in a post drilled to hold a lamp such as this. The lamp itself is made of brass, made to withstand heavy duty use. When you remove the thumbscrew, the plate on the top will lift off with the wick. We could not find another example like this one so we are calling it rare. What a great chance to obtain something that would have been vitally useful in its time, but is a relic now that predates the electric light bulb. These are from my 1976 English offshore racing sailboat. I've never used them. So cannot verify their working. I'd imagine they are fairly bulletproof simple things that should work, perhaps needing a bit of maintenance. They could use a good polishing. It is possible the the body brass is pitted beyond shine. The upper cap rod is missing its end cap thread, entirely aesthetic. All in all they seem a quality build.

It comes with a tall thin glass smoke chimney. It measures 15" high to the top of the chimney, the base is 3 5/16" wide. It has very obvious quality- best you could possibly find. Perhaps made by Weems& Plath or Scandinavian maker. Fine clean solid condition with no damage- check my photos. Inside oil lamp comes out to refill etc. Top unlatches as well too(as pictured) There is an imperfection(which looks like a chip. But you cannot"feel" it by touch) on the actually tiny hurricane glass piece surrounding the lamp piece itself. Residue left on the top"latch" of the piece from previous burning.
