The lamp stays level at any angle. It also has wear to the finish with corrosion on several spots. So study the pictures carefully. Although most of the piece is made of brass I suspect the shade is a different metal, perhaps copper. I have not tried lighting the lamp(no oil) so I can't say how well it works. Solid Brass Neptune NR Oil Burning Ships Lantern
This Solid Brass Ships Lantern was purchased by us from LL Bean in the early 1980's and is of the highest quality construction. The solid brass has great weld joints and copper rivet construction. The entire inner glass chimney portion is easily removed by two brass handles for fueling and cleaning. The lantern has been used several times and has some black smoke on the glass chimney. Still has 6" to 7" of cotton wick left in fuel pot. Other wise it is in perfect condition and could be passed on for generations. This could be polished to a high shine but I have preferred the acquired patina. The lantern measures approx. 15" X 8" and weighs approx. 6 lbs. This Tung Woo lamp was originally a decorative feature on a Knob Creek electric table lamp that we bought at an estate sale. It was not altered for the wiring of the Knob Creek lamp. It was merely attached to the lamps wood base with three small wood screws(see 7th pic) that we removed. Since it was only a decorative feature on the Knob Creek lamp, this Tung Woo lamp is in pristine"never lit" condition. It is made entirely from brass& copper with a polished aluminum reflector and clear glass front"shade" Except for the three tiny holes in it's base where it was attached to the Knob Creek lamp, it is in perfect, unused condition with no issues. The lamp is being offered as found for parts or refurbish or keep as is. The lamp stands 8.7/8" tall as is. The soot catcher or chimney cap is missing. The copper housing shows a lot of aged patina. There is a crack in the copper in the pierced trim that goes around the chimney(see image 9) The bottom door also has a split or crack(see image 5) The curved, green glass is in excellent condition for its age, just a few fine scratches and some dirt. Has a handle on the top to hang. And on the bottom it fits into slots to hold a kerosene or oil with wick. Top opens. There are no nicks or chips in the glass but some loss to color on the red and green see photos. Extremely great piece and would be great in your home for lighting or patio or boat. Air holes in the base for oxygen. Very large it measures 12 and 1/4" tall. Extremely Rare American Pat. dated March 13. 1860 Brass Ships Lantern! Same Patent date as Tufts Lanterns made in Boston and probably a Rare Tufts Lantern as shown. The date is on the bottom of the heavy glass Globe which is original to the Lamp. All Brass and in the early Bird Cage form. Complete with original Brass Whale Oil Burner, see photo#5. The Punched Tin Cone-top is fantastic, see photo#2. I see no damage or repairs and it measures 17 1/2" tall and 21" if you include the Ring Handle. 9" in diameter across the bottom. Quite heavy about 10 lbs. due mainly to the heavy glass Globe. A very rare piece of nautical History with 150 years of patina, never polished! With a funnel for oil. It has a shade of bubbled glass protected by brass rods. And has a clear inner chimney. The wick is adjustable. The shade can be raised and lowered to service the burner. There are five brass rods which can be linked to form a chain for hanging the lantern. Jylland" is the longest wooden ship in the world today. It has traditional sailing ship rigging as well as a steam engine. And is a perfect representative for the transition from sail to steam power. It is is very good condition considering its age! It has a very nice patina to it and all of the glass is still intact. It also has all of the reflector plates on the inside lid. This is important because there are reproductions out there and they do not have the reflector plates. Reproductions also don't have the lead flaps at the tops of the glass panels to hold the glass in. The other thing to look for is the data plate. Reproductions are usually thin and cheesy looking. This lamp has the nice thick data plate. I did my research before buying this at the auction and am 100% confident that this is an original. In fact there is still some soot in the corners of the reflector ... moreplates to indicate that it was used. Measurements are 24" tall and 14" across. Anchor Ships Lantern(Not a Reproduction) This is a very large antique ships lantern marked as"Anchor" To the best of my knowledge it has all parts needed to burn oil. Please view pictures to augment my description. It is not electrified and it is NOT a reproduction. Lamp measures a stately 23" to top of handle. 18" tall without handle and at its widest a 10" diameter. With the exception of a dent in the brass at the base the lantern is in excellent condition. Lantern inner chimney has a couple of chips and a crack at the bottom where it sits in base. This can be easily replace but I beleive that this one is original so I will not replace. Awesome nautical historical item. I am not an expert on oil lanterns but will do my best to answer questions. This lamp came from an estate in lower Delaware near the beach. The larger lantern is 19 1/2 inches height with base diameter of 9 3/4 inches. The smaller lantern measures 15 inches height and base diameter 9 inches. Both have discoloration from age. Some rust. The lantern stands about 11" and 5 1/4" wide. On the back is a key hole notch for hanging. The wick is still intact and the turn knob works. The glass chimney is about 10 1/4" tall and the base is 2" wide. On the chimney is written cristal Prima. There are some spots of tarnish and a small scuff in the front. Otherwise, in good condition.
