Here's a beautiful and rare set of 4 Portuguese Antique tiles. They date from the early 1800's. Tiles are in excellent condition for their age. It measures 27 cm x 2 7 cm( 10. 1/2" square) The Azulejo(tile) is a part of Portugal physiognomy. Azulejo is the term employed to describe these fine squares of kiln-fired clay. Glazed on one side. 1930's Tile Mural of Lower Manhattan
This is an extraordinary tile muralof Lower Manhattan. It is rare beyond rare. Hand painted. It was executed with great skill by the Ceramics Guild of New York in the mid 1930's during the WPA. My father was an architect and structural engineer during that time and purchased the work. It hung in his office for nearly seventy years. Some of the tiles have cracks, but they have been reset with archival integrity. To see lower Manhattan before the later development is truly a wonderful piece of history. The blue and white architectural rendition of this area is simply superb. The use of form and light and the layering of the buildings is breathtaking both artistically and architecturally. FOUR Superb Ruby Red Original Antique Art Nouveau Floral Tiles Circa Early 1900s
Set of Four Beautiful Original Art Nouveau Floral Ceramic Tiles The colours are beautifully saturated- I estimate them to be from between 1905- 1915. The faces of the tiles are in good vintage condition- expect some marks. But nothing too detrimental. There are some areas of repair in the corners of the tiles(an example of which i've shown in the third photo) to be honest, it's unlikely you'd notice these areas if the tiles are grouted in somewhere- and the overall condition I would describe as good. Marked'England' on the reverse(see second photo) They measures approximately 15 x 15 cms. Will be packaged securely and posted with insurance. I'm starting the auction at only £29.99. Vintage H & R Johnson retro psychedelic pattern tile 1970s
An H& R Johnson retro tile which I should think dates from the 1970s as it has typical decoration of that period with random splodges of paint in various shades of blue purple and green on a white ground. It measures 15cm square. Has several minor'nicks' around the edges and where some of the paint is really thick has some rubbing of the glaze. Manufacturer's marks to reverse as shown. Very pretty vintage tile with a shell design that has great glaze and depth and measures 6" by 6" by 3/8" wide. The back of the tile is marked Cambridge. There is crazing. Unusual Handmade Antique Clay Tile
I have had this tile for many years. It measures 4" x 4 2/16" and is 5/16" thick. There is slight age crackle and a very tiny flake off the bottom left corner that is difficult to see. Arts and Crafts preraphaelite tile E Smith and Co Coalville Bonhams Beaulah
This stunning arts and crafts tile is marked E Smith and CO Coalville on the reverse. It has a superb image of a woman in mediaeval costume which has a preraphaelite quality to it. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. It is marked with the original Bonhams sale label as lot number 207/23. It also has Ken Beaulah's collection number on the back: 1448 Ken Beaulah was author of Church Tiles of the C19th and a founder member of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramic Society. He began collecting whilst still at school in York. His collection of tiles was all meticulously accessioned. Photographed and documented in a two volume personal catalogue. He is an important figure in the study of architectural tiles. Sadly this tile has been broken in two. But has been expertly glued together. Victorian arts crafts geometric aesthetic tile Bonhams Beaulah Collection
This 5 ins tile has a delightful geometric pattern of shells and fantasmagorical beasts. It is thicker than some. So I wonder if it was a floor tile. The reverse has squares rather like Minton and Hollins, but there is no maker's name- only a stamped number in a square plate in the centre where only the end is discernable with numbers 26974. There is something outside the square which may be S& G or another number. The tile has one significant chip to the top right hand corner. The back is clean. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. Some items are marked with a complete Bonhams sticker. Some have original Beaulah registrations on the back. 4 Gorgeous Shabby Vintage Early 1900s Ceramic Tiles Johnson England FM Greens
4 Gorgeous Shabby Vintage Early 1900s Ceramic Tiles Johnson England FM Greens I think I told you a month or so ago that I bought a lot of old ceramic tiles. I grouped those together that match. And those that did not match, I grouped together by"theme" these being a green theme! What I have is a lot of 4 vintage, early 1900s ceramic tiles- all measuring 6" square, and all used- with varying degrees of plaster at the backside from when they were removed. On is marked on the backside FM, one is marked H& R( Johnson LTD England, and I cannot read the marks on the other two. All have paper tags affixed to them that will come off. I started to pull them off for my photos, but they are stuck on really well, so I just gave up- all you'll need is some water or cleaner. They all have numbers on them that are not prices- not ... moresure what they mean. I am calling them shabby in my title, because of the plaster on the backs, the crazing on the fronts, and the other issues that you see in my photos. One tile has a surface crack that does from the rose to the end, it's on the top only. One tile has what looks to be a triangular chip that is 1' and has been repaired- glued back in, you can see the lines. This same time has chips on the adjacent side- 2, that run for about 2" on that side. The third tile has a teenie 1/4 shallow chip off of the front of one of the corners, and the last tile has just crazing. All of them have nibbles on the white backs along the rims and backs. One has a fair amount of thick plaster at the back. Even with all of these issues, they are still lovely old tiles- I have priced them with the issues in mind, though. They are dirty and need to be cleaned- I have not tried to clean them in any way. The colors are gorgeous- white backgrounds and deep forest and mossy greens accented with all shades of pink. A lovely yellow flower pattern in golden, yellow, green and periwinkle. The tile is in excellent, undamaged condition, with pencil lines on the front and writing on the back. Made of red clay. The tile is 3/8 inches thick and isn't warped. It is unmarked, and has been used.
