2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. A tile that was fixed to the wall in the world famous Victoria& Albert Museum in London and bearing the logo of said establishment. One of few that were successfully removed during refurbishment in the 1970s and I doubt any of those that remain will ever be removed. The Victoria& Albert Museum was formerly know as The South Kensigton Museum. Its name was changed in 1899 upon the visit of Queen Victoria, her last official public appearance. The Victoria and Albert Museum, often abbreviated as the V&A as seen on this tile, ... moreis the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design as is reflected by its architecture. From my personal collection since several years. Selling reluctantly, due to requiring a new roof on our premises which is a listed building in the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge, and with numerous other complications. As stated by G. Woolliscroft Rhead and Frederick Alfred Rhead. Both veterans of Mintons and numerous other tile and pottery manufacturers, in their book Staffordshire Pots& Potters, and despite more recent writings seeking to elevate the names of Mintons(a rival company owner by Colin Campbell) and William de Morgan and others, Minton, Hollins& Co, were the leading tilemakers for much of the nineteenth century. Minton, Hollins and Co. maintained their pre-eminence, and for a long period most of the new public buildings in England and elsewhere were fitted with the tiles of Minton, Hollins and Co. This auction is for 3 wonderful early Minton tiles. They are absolutely gorgeous! Each is different yet similar. The color is as deep and vibrant as it looks.just wonderful! Each tile measures 4 1/4 inches across. All 3 tiles are in excellent condition. They were obviously placed around a fireplace or something. As two have a lot of cement residue on the back. Made in Stoke on Trent around 1875. The beautiful design features raised dark blue flowers with yellow. Brown and white centres. Yellow borders with blue, brown white and green decorations.
