Antique art TILE bas relief Persian Qajar Iznik Russian Afghanistan Italy German
Another antique item brought home by Afghanistan vet. See below. Hard to figure out origin. This is a very primitive pottery tile. Antiquity or antique. Hand-painted and lead glazed in clear. Greens, browns, yellow and soft golden orange. Possibly Persian, Qajar Iznik Approx. 7-5/8" high. A little over 4-7/8" wide. The thickness varies because it was formed in bas relief, with the bowl or hat at his feet, his bent knees, right shoulder, and right side of his head are higher or thicker than the rest, like 3-D modeling. No cracks. Some crazing, see pics. There are several small spots where the glazing missed, maybe one spot where it has come off. There is an edge chip on the top right that starts on the front and runs over the side, and kind of continues on the back a bit. The left bottom corner has a small chip as well. It is glazed with a deep brown treacle glaze effect. And typical barge ware applied reliefs of flowers. The central motif panel states"Mrs Roberts, Heavier the Cross and Brighter the Crown 1888" This truly stunning tile is in a very good condition for it's vintage but does have some factors for consideration as shown in several close up photos and as now described. Four of the tiles seem to be the same and then the one on the left of the first picture is different. They all are antique rose pattern from the Victorian era. These tiles are rare and hard to find. Especially with a set of five. They are 6x6 inch tiles that are 1/2 inch thick. They were made in circa 1885. They have some chips in the glaze and there is definitely crazing in the glaze. None are broken. Very good condition considering they are 129 years old! A little history of these tiles and how I acquired them. Well it was a Saturday afternoon and my husband and I were traveling through Connecticut. We saw signs for a barn sale and followed them through the back roads of Connecticut. ... moreWe finally arrived at this barn filled with 3 generations of antiques. The owner was moving to a retirement home and he was about 80 years old sitting in a chair and told us to come in and look around. So we did. The floor of this barn was not very sturdy and we had to be very careful where we stepped. We found a lot of items but in the corner of this barn, in a back room there was this box. In the box were these tiles carefully packed and probably sitting there for at least 100 years. Five vintage asphalt floor tiles c. 1940-50 with original box. Each is 9" square. Each tile is cut from 2 pieces and heavy. A very unusual original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" The two-panelled design features two stylized graduated amber-caramel tulips surrounded by evenly spaced floating bubbles or perhaps it's snowing( The background is a toning light khaki-caramel colour. In fabulous overall condition. Some very tiny chips around the extreme edges only. All four corners were chamfered for fitting into furniture or a fireplace at the time of manufacture. The rear of the tile is marked'ENGLAND' This tile is from my own collection. Easily postable. The finished parcel will weigh around 850g-950g for a single tile properly bubblewrapped. Stunning 18th Century Gargoyle Cuenca Spanish Antique tile
Stunning Antique Gargoyle ceramic tile. This is a Spanish Cuenca tile with a very unique design depicting a Gargoyle on top of a flower vase. There are similar tiles made by Ramos Rejano tile company in Seville from the 19/20th Century, this one is older, all hand made and not an industrially produced tile, quite thick and heavy, I believe it is from the late 18th Century, a great piece.
