Bells Glasgow pottery'marble' pattern chamber pot. This beautiful chamber pot measures approx. 22cm in diameter. Approx 14.5cm in height and approx.25cm in length from handle to the lip of the chamber pot. The chamber pot is decorated in a grey marble pattern which seem to have been done before glazing and firing. The chamber pot is heavy and solid. There is a small chip at the base of the chamber pot, this is very old chip as it has aged and discoloured. There are some light patches of crazing over the pot, this can be seen on the underside. The J& M.P. Bells pottery in Glasgow suffered from a major fire and as such may moulds. Templates and other equipment was totally destroyed. Sometime ago researchers dug through the factory remains to try and find what remains they could. This means that may of Bells patterns, styles and pottery was destroyed and lost. After extensive research regarding this'marble' pattern. I have found only one reference towards it. This was in Henry H. Kelly's definitive book'The Glasgow pottery of John and Matthew Perston Bell. This chamber pot was looked at by a Glasgow pottery expert who had never come across this pattern from the Bells factory before. This was backed up by an academic and historian at an Edinburgh museum. They both advised that the only reference to this pattern could be made through Henry H. Kelly's book and that this pattern is a true rarity. Due to my location it could be more than possible that this pattern was a'New' technique or idea that was only made on a few pieces that then went home with employees rather than for sale to the public. This theory was also backed up by expert opinion. This is a beautiful piece of pottery heavy and solid. Encaustic tiles are those with an inlaid pattern created from different colored clays. A die is used to form and intaglio pattern in the front of a plastic clay tile and the resoulting depressions are filled with a contrasting color of slip clay. Encaustic tiles were also produced by dustpressing using a complex system of pierced metal plates or lattices placed in the bottom of the screw press to separate different colored dust-clays. The characteristic of these tiles is durability. And adapts to all kinds of climates. Ideal for exterior too. Besides the fact that can be re-polished many times returning them to its original intense color. English. Maw& Co. encaustic" floor tiles(pattern made of different colors of inlaid clay-also called quarry tiles I believe) from front entrance of historic New Hampshire home. Probably ~100 years old. Finish has dulled over time but in generally good condition. Removed in renovation so sub floor could be replaced. Grout had dried out so tiles came up without tools and were therefore not damaged. Lot of 10 encaustic floor tiles made by the mosaic tile company of Zanesville Ohio. Marked on the backs with a bold logo. Each measures 6 in.² and a full 5/8" thick. Stylized acanthus with a pixelated look. Unglazed. Encaustic tiles are made with different colored clay. These tiles were never installed but there are some with chips and some are dirty. I would guess, to the late 1800s or early 1900s. I don't have documentation, but it was removed from the floor of the U.S. capitol building during a renovation in the 1920s-40s period. My first wife's grandfather was a capitol maintenance engineer and had several of these tiles. The replacement tiles in the capitol look exactly like this.
