Vintage United States Encaustic Tile Co.
I have for sale a complete set of"The United States Encaustic Tile Co" of Indianapolas Indiana fireplace surround circa 1880. Each tile is 6"x 6" and there is 17 total. There are nesting birds on each side and across the top. There are 2 figures in each corner. One of a man and one of a woman. The bottom tile on the left is missing a corner. I also have floor tile included. Most of the mortar is of the back but there is still some on a few pcs. Due to the weight of the tiles they will be sent in 3 flat rate boxes at 14.95 each for safety in shipping.

The tile has been used and there is some grout on the recesses at the corners and some grout on one side. Tiny tiny chip on the bottom edge on the side with the grout residue. Also a tiny tiny chip on the top right corner edge. The bottom corners and edges are slightly rough. The chips are hard to see and do not distract from the appearance. Vintage Encaustic Floor Tiles. Each measure 5 5/8" square x 5/8" thick. You are bidding on four matching. Border run. I do have more in this style available, winning bid may add on additional sets. Beautiful winter white, terra cotta, grey and dusty moss green. These tiles are in good condition. The design and color go through the tile so as the floor is worn you would never know! Made to last many life times! These tiles were removed from a floor and the cement backing still remains. I have had some success removing the cement by soaking the tile in water. This will loosen the cement. Then you can remove by lightly tapping with a hammer. Set this set of four in a table top for your garden or solarium. Antique Victorian Ceramic Art Tile Colombia Encaustic Tile Co. Anderson Indiana
Victorian art tile made by the Columbia Encaustic Tile Co. of Anderson.Indiana.Marked on the back. This tile measures 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" x 1/2" thick. Central flower with botanicals in a mint green and ochre glaze. Columbia tiles do not come up for sale very often and the"encaustic" part of their name may mean that that is what they primarily produced-unglazed encaustic tiles.This tile has a"hole" at the bottom right. It was a very dark spot that I ran underwater and it slowly dissolved and left this mark. No doubt a piece of organic material that made it's way onto the surface of the tileduring production and burned into the tile. A few other chips on the right side as seen in photos as well as a few edge indents that are factory done and glazed over. A scarce tile nonetheless! Poole, Dorset. It dates to the middle of the 19th century. The encaustic tile has inlaid triangular colours in light blue, white, black and iron red. The back of the tile is embossed: Patent Architl Pottery, Poole Dorset, Bale's Patent, Mosaic" The Architectural Pottery Company was later taken over by'Carter& Co. who were eventually to become'Poole Pottery' This tile is possibly a design by T W Walker who was chief technician at the company until 1860. Condition/ Defects: The tile is in reasonably good condition; ... moreit has one or two chips around the edges. Simple but with great strength, curvaceous and natural. Glazed with a light olive glaze showing as warm brown on the buff clay body and mid green on the white clay decoration. Made by an unusual and not well understood process the body in buff clay and the decoration in white clay presumably dust pressed on to the surface for the accuracy of the decoration when comparing several tiles is near flawless far better than transfer printing or even ordinary moulding. The process which I have only seen used by the western companies in Jackfield and Hereford captures ... morethe precision of encaustic with the texture of embossed moulding. A substantial tile. Thicker than normal and semi vitrified buff clay, very durable and suitable for exterior use, it hasn't crazed. The design is seen in the Maw catalogue page reprinted in Barnard. Fair condition. Chip left edge, other minute rim chips/roughness, very minor surface marks near the rim. Without the chip left edge one would say very good condition, could be disguised such as with brown wax and is in any case an interesting tile for the collector. The sale is for this antique tile. It is a dust- pressed tile measuring a little more than 4 1/4 inches square. It was most likely designed by the noted ceramicist Herman Mueller and was made by the American Encaustic Tiling Co. to commemorate the dedication of its new factory in Zanesville. Ohio on April 19. 1892. It is in very good condition while noting that the lower left and upper right hand corners are very slighty"rubbed" This tile is featured in the book called“American Art Tile” by Norman Karlson(what I consider a bible of tile collecting)

Here we have for sale a wonderful rare 19th Century Victorian encaustic gothic styled tile featuring a wonderful"fleur de lys" design dating from between c1852 and c1906 made by the top quality manufacturer of the time of William Godwin of Lugwardine. Hereford, England. Fully stamped to back of tile with manufacturers name. I have around 27 tiles for sale all by W Godwin with many different gothic designs. William and his younger brother Henry began manufacturing encaustic tiles at Lugwardine. Hereford in 1852. William had previously produced bricks at Lugwardine before his brother joined him in their new venture. Henry had prior experience with making tiles at Worcester for Maw and Co. The new joint venture was successful and the multicolored and pressed heavy floor tiles appealed to architects renovating older churches since the tiles closely mimicked the original medieval inlaid tiles. The Godwin factory produced medieval style tiles with more of a genuine historical feel than those mass produced at Minton and elsewhere. And for this reason. Godwin's tiles achieved great popularity among architects restoring churches and other old public buildings. In 1858, William& Henry Godwin produced encaustic and mosaic tiles; bricks, draining tiles and pipes, and a reportedly 850,000 bricks per year. A die is used to form and intaglio pattern in the front of a plastic clay tile and the resoulting depressions are filled with a contrasting color of slip clay. Encaustic tiles were also produced by dustpressing using a complex system of pierced metal plates or lattices placed in the bottom of the screw press to separate different colored dust-clays. Set of 16 antique American Columbia Encaustic Tile Company tiles decorated with a lovely earth green glaze and flowers in relief. Circa 1890s. MEASUREMENTS: each tile measures 6x6 inches and is about 1/2 inch thick. LET’S TALK CONDITION: Overall very fine condition for the age with typical glaze crackling with only a few tiles with cracks on the back still very sturdy. There are some chips on a few tiles but that is on the back one tile has a small chip to the corner visible from the front and a couple of tiles have small flakes to the glaze on the front. Most all the old grout and adhesive is gone but some remnant is still attached. This is a vintage/antique tile. Made by the American Encaustic Tiling Co Ltd, Zanesville, Ohio(also showroom in New York) They were in business from 1875 to 1935. This tile is pictured on Plate 47 E in the catalog of American Encaustic Tiles shown on oldhouseauthority.com. It is embossed and is a pale buff color, showing a Grecian style woman holding a tambourine high over her head. I think it would be considered"Faience" there is no shiny glaze. The tile is framed, the size framed is about 8/2 x 20 1/2 inches. The tile itself measures 6 x 18 inches. Please see pictures for condition; overall I think it is in very good condition. The back has two chips on the edge(see pic) and there are some little nicks on the front near the feet. Hamilton Majolica Encaustic Tile Fireplace Surround
Up for auction is this beautiful set of 19 Hamilton encaustic tiles. These tiles were recently salvaged from a fantastic 1892 mansion in St Louis. MO that has fallen on hard times. The tiles were manufactured and signed by the Hamilton Tile Company in Hamilton, Ohio which was in business from 1883-1901. The color is a rich,chocolate brown with a lighter color on the raised areas which depict song birds and tree branches. 4 of the 19 tiles are undecorated. The condition of these tiles is very good with 2 of the tiles having surface chips and 2 tiles having one back edge which has been chipped off(shown in photos) They all retain a glossy finish with some crazing which is common with type of tile. They measure 6" x 6" and were used to surround a fireplace opening. Individual tiles are not that difficult to find but a full set in this ... morecondition is very hard to come by. For your consideration and for auction I offer an EARLY 19TH CENTURY MINTON& CO. ENCAUSTIC TILE. This tile which measures 6" x 6" 15 x 15 centimetres) Has a solid red earthenware body inlaid with a buff slip with a yellow glaze. The tile was produced by the factory of Minton& Co. of Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire and weighs a hefty 1.4 kilos. I believe the image to be that of an enthroned Edward the Confessor. a design by Pugin based on medieval tiles from Westminster Abbey Chapter House which were copied by Minton to provide a medieval style floor for the restoration of the Temple Church in 1840-1845. See Atterbury and Wainwright 1994 p144) The tile has a little loss to some edges and a minor repair to one corner which doesn't impact upon the pictorial image of the tile.
