Rare 19th Century Old English Polychrome Tiles: 4 Seasons- Josiah Wedgwood& Sons In 1878 Wedgwood produced these transfer printed scenes. In various colours on ceramic tiles. They were designed by Helen Miles, an artist extrodinaire at the Wedgewood factories. It is quite rare to find the polychrome painted tiles. In around 1900 the same patterns began appearing on plates and other flatware, with various old and new borders All tiles are marked JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ... moreETRURIA on the back. The only time Wedgwood used the back marking phrase, JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ETRURIA was on their tiles. The winter tile also has‘ENGLISH’ on the back. I believe these 4 tiles were collected to represent the seasons. Winter: Marked‘February’ a beautiful tile! 6” x 6” a young lad escorting his young love through a snowy forest Spring: Marked‘April’ shows April showers 6” x 6” a young lady with her little brother, both in stocking feet, holding an umbrella in the pouring rain. Summer: Unmarked(In the set it is July) 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" an older sister with her young brother at a ship yard/boat dock. Fall: Unmarked(in the set it is October) 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" A young lad with a walking stick and a pig with a stone brodge in the background. 5 Antique English Art Nouveau Ceramic Tiles Dark Green Stylized Flower Majolica
5 Antique English Art Nouveau Ceramic Tiles These come from an estate we are honored to be liquidating Note: The pictures make the tiles look a bit yellowed in the lower right corners of the images. That is a function of the indoor lighting. They actual tiles are not yellowed. This lot consists of five Art Nouveau period tiles made in England. They are checkered. With lovely stylized flowers. They measure 6X6 inches. While the overall condition is pretty nice for antique tiles. They do have a few issues worth noting. There are scuffs and scratches scattered about, most noticeable in the plain dark green areas. They have the iridescent sheen that is acquired over time due to cleaning, but that is typical of antique tiles. There are a few small nick around the edges, the worst being on the tile pictured in the upper left. That tile also has ... moresome dark staining on the back. A couple have as-mad imperfections, the most notable being a spot where the glaze did not stick on a small raised bump in the center of the dark green area. Finally, they all have crazing. The last two pictures show the surfaces in bright raking light, to show the minute flaws on the surface. Those flaws are not that obvious to the naked eye under normal lighting situations. Flaws notwithstanding. The design corners are all quite nice. I think these would be great to cut out and use for accent pieces. Overall, a decent, if not perfect lot of genuine antique English Art Nouveau tiles. Offered at a low minimum bid giving consideration to the condition issues. Stoke Upon Trent- The partnership between Colin Minton Campbell and Michael Daintry Hollins ended in 1868. It produced a split in the famous Minton company. With Campbell in charge of china production at Minton's China Works, and Hollins producing tiles of various types at Minton, Hollins& Co. Campbell also started to produce tiles, but it was not until he took over an existing tileworks in 1875 that production of encaustic and mosaic floor tiles began. This business was originally styled the Minton Brick& Tile Co. though a lawsuit brought by Hollins forced Campbell to drop'Minton' from the name. Antique Art Nouveau, Victorian English Border Tiles - 1900s - 4 tiles
These are gorgeous antique tiles made in England likely in the early 1900s or late 1800s. These are really lovely with a nice glossy and crackly thick glaze finish. It was difficult to get the color to show up accurately. So I put a very red piece of paper next to them so you can see the color. I would call it pomegranate myself. They are in beautiful, but used, vintage, antique condition. Please read the condition description and review the photos. This auction is for 4 tiles that are red. Any other tiles in the photos are not included. The tiles are approximately 3"x6" each. I have many other antique tiles listed in a separate auctions. The scene on these tin glazed tiles depicts Jesus carrying the Cross. An Angel with Roman and a person being served at a table I have not seen many of these types of designs around for sale. All the tiles have some damage(see below) All are 5” Tiles. The backs have plaster from a wall attached. The four outer corner motifs are early delicate variants of the oxhead motif and help date this tile to the 1690 to 1750 period. Biblical tiles from the late 1600s up to the mid-1700s are typical manganese purple and include many different Christian events and scenes. Tile2(Angel) Bottom Right Hand Corner has Nibble and the edges are marked slightly commensurate with use and age.
