ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PROVIDENTIAL TILE FIREPLACE SURROUND portrait tiles
The sale is for this gorgeous antique tile surround that was made by the New Jersey Providential Tile company in the late 1800's. The picture is a shortened version of the surround. There are quite a few more of the mottled tiles. It is in good condition and is comprised of the 2 corner portrait tiles and the rest are 6x1.5 inch and 3 x 1.5 inch tiles. Very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround. There is some residual mortar and the portrait tiles have a few edge abrasions(please see closeup pictures) The most common surround would be 30" high and across. If you need more tiles for your fireplace surround I can flesh out this design with the mottled tiles. I have many antique tiles listed.

Hamilton Majolica Encaustic Tile Fireplace Surround
Up for auction is this beautiful set of 19 Hamilton encaustic tiles. These tiles were recently salvaged from a fantastic 1892 mansion in St Louis. MO that has fallen on hard times. The tiles were manufactured and signed by the Hamilton Tile Company in Hamilton, Ohio which was in business from 1883-1901. The color is a rich,chocolate brown with a lighter color on the raised areas which depict song birds and tree branches. 4 of the 19 tiles are undecorated. The condition of these tiles is very good with 2 of the tiles having surface chips and 2 tiles having one back edge which has been chipped off(shown in photos) They all retain a glossy finish with some crazing which is common with type of tile. They measure 6" x 6" and were used to surround a fireplace opening. Individual tiles are not that difficult to find but a full set in this ... morecondition is very hard to come by. These have been salvaged from a fireplace surround in a home in Holmes County Ohio. On the back they are marked with a Curved Sword Piercing the Moon and One Star. We have tried to research this maker’s mark and are presuming this was produced on the Ohio River from the Alhambra Tile Company in Newport KY. We have contacted the Historical Society in Newport KY and they also believe that these were produced from the Alhambra Tile Company. Still. We all could be incorrect but below we have inserted the history for the Alhambra Tile Co. A lot of these fireplace tiles were shipped out of this company ... morethrough the canals during this era. Many fireplace tiles located in Holmes County and the surrounding areas have this style. Shape and color of small fireplace mantel surround tiles. These fireplace tiles are in as removed condition and being sold as is. We have not cleaned them. They need a good cleaning to really show their true colors. I have cleaned one tile to show you the beauty of these old colors of aqua and cream plus some muted yellow tones. Some have old chips. New chips, very nice conditions. staining and half tiles. Some tiles are nice and clean on the back. Others have residue. They will all leave a chalk trail where ever they go! Also. The sale is for 1 of these great looking antique tiles surround that were made by the Trent Tile company of New Jersey in the late 1800's. They measure 6 x 1.5" I have the 3 x 1.5 inch tiles in this so very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround with the traditional staggered design. The most common surround would be 30" high and across( or fifteen 6 inch squares) This comes out to be 60 tiles since 4 of these make a 6" square. They measure 4.25" x 1" I loved the color glaze on these tiles so much that I had put them aside for years but since I've not gotten around to using them.here they are.
