ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PROVIDENTIAL TILE FIREPLACE SURROUND portrait tiles
The sale is for this gorgeous antique tile surround that was made by the New Jersey Providential Tile company in the late 1800's. The picture is a shortened version of the surround. There are quite a few more of the mottled tiles. It is in good condition and is comprised of the 2 corner portrait tiles and the rest are 6x1.5 inch and 3 x 1.5 inch tiles. Very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround. There is some residual mortar and the portrait tiles have a few edge abrasions(please see closeup pictures) The most common surround would be 30" high and across. If you need more tiles for your fireplace surround I can flesh out this design with the mottled tiles. I have many antique tiles listed.

The sale is for this antique tile. It is a dust- pressed tile measuring a little more than 4 1/4 inches square. It was most likely designed by the noted ceramicist Herman Mueller and was made by the American Encaustic Tiling Co. to commemorate the dedication of its new factory in Zanesville. Ohio on April 19. 1892. It is in very good condition while noting that the lower left and upper right hand corners are very slighty"rubbed" This tile is featured in the book called“American Art Tile” by Norman Karlson(what I consider a bible of tile collecting)

Portrait tile, General Foch, WWI interest. 'Geo:Cartlidge',Emaux Ombrants. Rare.
This is a rare tile depicting WWI General Foch. The tile was made by Geo:Cartlidge using the technique known as emaux ombrants- a relief depiction flooded level with thick glassy glaze. The tile is one of an extensive series of leading figures of WW1 and was made in 1916. This one has a little damage to the top left as can be seen and some mild surface scratches as can be seen; basically the condition is very good. It measures 6 by 9 inches(15.2 cm by 22.9 cm) It is a very rare item and is in good condition. A handsome antique(circa late 1800s) Tile depicting a Knight or Cavalier. The tile is made of art pottery and is most likely English in origin. Overall dimensions are 6 1/4" square. The tile has some cement on the back and minor wear to the edges from it's previous use. there is the typical crazing that is often found on antique tiles. See photos. The tile was most likely a part of an architectural element. There are scratches to the glaze on the side of his face from his forehead to his chin. Handpainted portrait tile of W. H. Constable
This is a handpainted Minton tile inscribed on the rear W. H. Constable 1881. Constable was a noted stained glass artist in the Cambridge area and his work can still be seen in many churches in the area. The tile is 8 inches square and as a few edge chips which can be seen in the picture. Down the right of the tile is a light area where the paint may have rubbed off.

A very nice antique Trent high relief portrait tile of a young man with long curly locks and a high ruffled collar. The golden majolica glaze has a beautiful soft shine. ANTIQUE Trent PORTRAIT TILE ~ gorgeous blue ~ 6x6 ~ HIGHLY raised design~Framed
The sale is for this Trent antique portrait tile with a VERY highly raised design. This is one of the most desirable Trent portrait tiles. I have not removed it from the frame but I am quite familiar with this tile. It will be unmarked with a concave image of the face on the back of the tile. It appears that someone colored(brown) which I suspect are some abrasions to the high points of the glaze. If it were removed you would have unglazed abrasions which would be difficult to notice and a more homogeneous look if that is preferred. Please zoom in on the pictures to see. The frame is deep and quite ornate but is damaged in the lower left hand corner. The tile alone is 6x6 inches. I have many antique tiles listed and many of them the very desirable portrait tiles. 1880's Trent Tile Co Antique Portrait Tile Great antique 1880's portrait tile of a lady with a detailed high lace collar. Braided hair wound in a bun with a head band. It is in a beautiful teal blue green glaze, that looks a little different color according to light and background, I tried to show this in the photos. It is made by Trent Tile Co. Trenton, New Jersey, the tile is unmarked. Condition: It is in great condition! There is a small chip on the back of the tile see pic#12. There is a little bit of rough edges on the high lace collar. But I don't see any chips. There is normal age related glaze cracks that is common on antique tiles, but they are not very significant nor very noticeable. There is a recessed boarder around the tile, on the left side of the boarder edge there are two small minor chips under the glaze that ... morewere there before firing. I just wanted to mention all flaws, they are minor and do not detract from the beauty of the tile. Size: It measures 4" square to edge of tile. 4 1/4" including the recessed boarder. The glossy glaze is a pinky brown colour. The back is flat and has an impressed triangle with rope knot inside- the mark for Sherwin& Cotton. With"Trade Mark England" around it. Lot Of Antique Trent/Cambridge Tile Includes 2 Portrait Tiles Of A Man And Woman
I have here a lot of antique Trent tile made in Trenton N.J. There are a total of 9 pieces of Trent and 1 piece of Cambridge. The other piece of tile I can not read the makers name. The first 2 tiles are the portrait tiles. One features a woman. It measures 6 x 6. The back still has a patch of the mortar attached that covers most of the word Trent. However a T is quite visible. There are also some abrasions along the raised portions of the tile. There is also writing on it that says sitting room. I have been told that these were taken out of the Wilmington Inn in Wilmington Ohio, but have no verification of that. The second portrait tile is that of a man. It also measures 6 x 6. As with the other tile there is mortar on the back and some abrasions on the front. Trent is clearly visible on this piece. The next 7 pieces are a plain brown color. ... moreThey all measure 6 x 6. 6 of them are in really good condition with the word Trent clearly visible. The seventh tile has a chip off of the one side and has mortar over the word Trent. The next 2 pieces are not Trent. One is definitely Cambridge. It measures 4 x 1 1/2. It has been broken and should measure 6 x 1 1/2. The other piece I am assuming is Cambridge, I can not read the name on the back. Since it is the same color it is probably a good bet that it is also Cambridge. It measures 6 x 1 1/2. They both have a brown, pale green, and cream colored marble pattern. This tile is in very good condition with crackling of the glaze or finish on the surface. It's six inches square. I took several photos of front and back in case the camera flash overpowers part of the image. The back pattern may be useful in identifying a maker.

Antique J +JG Low Majolica Victorian Portrait Art Tile 6" Ceramic Pottery 1880's
Late 19th century art tile made by the J and JG low art tile company of Chelsea Massachusetts. Low went out of business in 1908. Unmarked due to the incused back but a well-documented low design pictured in Norman Karlson's book on American art tiles. Fantastic portrait tile in a deep and rich teal blue glaze. The recessed area on the back was to compensate for the very high relief on the face and to keep the clay thickness consistent throughout the tile. This would help to keep the tile from warping during the firing or cooling process. I have seen this tile made with the flatpack and I have seen some that are warped. A small mark in front of the ear that is under/within the glaze and doesn't disrupt the surface. Another high end example of this tile. Beautiful olive glaze. This tile spent it's entire life in a frame and was ... morenever installed into a wall or fireplace. Beautiful classical figural reminiscent of American coins from the same 1880's period. I always think of the Morgan dollar when I see this tile. The color and condition combine for a lot of wow factor! I also have a similarly nice same tile in a blue glaze. Listed in another auction. Fantastic antique Art Nouveau era French made tile from J.G. Givet. This is a stylized portrait of American Dancer Isadora Duncan. Tile has tubeline decoration and majolica glazes in turquoise. Grey, Brown, purple, red, cream and blue. Stunning. Has been repaired from a clean break running from top to bottom.
