Antique Traditional Portuguese border tile #483
B eautiful Portuguese Antique tile. Dating from the late 1800's. tiles has been trimmed at the upper edge but overall condition is quite good ffor it's age. It measures approx. 14cm x 13.5 cm( 5. 1/8" square) The Azulejo(tile) is a part of Portugal physiognomy. Azulejo is the term employed to describe these fine squares of kiln-fired clay. This tile has no maker’s mark but the type of blank and style of number look similar to Corn Brothers’ tiles of the late 1800s. It is decorated with a transfer printed flower in brown. The back of the tile is clean and is marked 249. It is 6 inches square. The tile is crazed but otherwise very good with no cracks or scratches and just a couple of fleabites. 1883 sepia transfer printed tile Old Age
This tile can be dated precisely from the diamond mark printed on the back: it was made on 31 November 1883. There is no maker’s mark though. Nor any designer’s signature or mark and I don’t know any more about it than I can tell from looking. The design is transfer printed in sepia on a slightly over 6 inch blank which has an impressed roundel mark on the back. The image is of an elderly woman spinning with the words OLD AGE alongside. I’m guessing it’s from a seven ages series. The design is quite stylised and geometric and the elderly spinner is set against an almost Mediterranean looking backdrop. I would like to know more about it but I would also like it to go to a good home! The condition is fair: the surface is crazed. This tile is one of the Idylls of the King series created by John Moyr Smith for Minton and produced in c.1876(see page 74 of Annamarie Stapleton’s book) This tile depicts Gareth from Tennyson’s Gareth and Lynette. This is the 6 inch version in the brown. White and blue colourway. The tile appears to be in very good condition with just some light crazing. The visible part of the back is also very clean. The tile has however been framed so I can’t tell the condition of the edges. The frame complements the tile and is secured simply by brown tape which overlaps most of the back of the tile. The only thing which concerns me slightly is that a fixing plate has been glued to the back of the tile. The glue looks old though and could probably be disolved quite easily. I have been brutally honest in pointing out what might be some drawbacks but this ... moretile displays extremely well. This is the buff body colourway. The tile is 8 inches square. The tile appears to be in very good condition- there are some surface scratches but these are not particularly noticeable and there is no crazing. The back is also very clean. The tile has however been framed so I can’t tell the condition of the edges. The frame is simple and complements the tile and is secured simply by small nails which overlap the back of the tile. One of 3 matching original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tiles measuring 6" x 6" Glorious design of olive-green poppy flower with amber heart. Brown-green stem and brighter green leaves against a cream background. Great original condition with the usual background crackle-crazing due to age which has acquired sootiness from the fireplace that it came from(can be bleached clean easily by soaking in a dilute solution of household bleach in water) The vertical craze lime at extreme bottom centre continues through to the rear of the tile as an unopened hairline crack. There is a minor vintage edge chip to the extreme lower left near the corner& 1 tiny speck of clay underglaze on right-hand leaf. The rear is unmarked but the tile was made by Corn Brothers. Description This is a Victorian cream and brown Gothic style tile made by Maw& Co. It has the makers name on the reverse. With"Maw Floreat Salopia" in the centre and the address"Broseley Salop. I believe it dates to 1852-83. It is in good condition, just 2 small nibbles to the glaze on the rim, ccracks or restoration. There is a small paper label with number 157 on it. This one is probably the second best and is a good example of how English tile designs were copied in Japan in the inter-war years. Maker; Danto Kaisha. Japan Date: c1920 Size: 6" square(15.2 cm) Based on a Richards Tiles design of c1915-20. The design is virtually identical to the Richard's version. But in rather more muted colours.

This listing is for 18 tile pieces approximately 1.5" ceramic blue/turquoise loose tiles from a mid-century Southern California pool home. A beautiful brilliant blue design which reflects the style of mid-century design themes. This is used ceramic tile which was removed from a dried-out pond which has not had water in it for over 30 years. I may have a couple of additional pieces if needed to complete a small project which I can possibly acquire for you. These should clean up nicely for a more brilliant shine with appropriately cleaning solutions such as Lime Away.
