Poole, Dorset. It dates to the middle of the 19th century. The encaustic tile has inlaid triangular colours in light blue, white, black and iron red. The back of the tile is embossed: Patent Architl Pottery, Poole Dorset, Bale's Patent, Mosaic" The Architectural Pottery Company was later taken over by'Carter& Co. who were eventually to become'Poole Pottery' This tile is possibly a design by T W Walker who was chief technician at the company until 1860. Condition/ Defects: The tile is in reasonably good condition; ... moreit has one or two chips around the edges. Consistent with age and use; it also has surface cracks in the pottery, which I think are from the tile's manufacture and not damage. Please supersize the photos to see better. These are early pieces from the company that went onto become known as Poole pottery. Establish by Jesse Carter in 1873 these tiles are late 19th century and probably made for a fire surround Both are the same and are not encaustic as such but have have impressed and relief moulded decoration and have then been hand painted and fired. The do have nibbles and chips on the edge but would restore or could be framed to hide most of them. Poole Pottery, c.1903• Style: Art nouveau• Technique: Embossed majolica• Maker: Carter. Poole Pottery• Dimensions: 3" x 6" Date: circa 1903 A great art nouveau design and rarely found. I have seen just one burgundy example previously but the highly translucent green glaze has so much more brilliance which accentuates the relief to its greatest potential. The design vivaciously fills the tile, the high relief and superb translucency and brilliance of the glaze gives due justice to the modelling and moulding creating a superb diversity of tonal greens, an excellent example of the tremblay technique/effect. Verso similarly moulded enusring a consistent thickness of clay for strength and durability. Just one available, ... moreonly two were found and the other occupies a cherised place in my personal collection. Good condition. Chip top right corner, distracting but could be restored without too much difficulty, and worth doing for such a great and rare tile, near perfect surface just a few marks to the high relief only seen when sought after. Postscript. Whilst designed by Carter this was actually manufactured by Maw& Co, the greatest tile makers of all time, as were similar tiles by Carter.
