ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PROVIDENTIAL TILE FIREPLACE SURROUND portrait tiles
The sale is for this gorgeous antique tile surround that was made by the New Jersey Providential Tile company in the late 1800's. The picture is a shortened version of the surround. There are quite a few more of the mottled tiles. It is in good condition and is comprised of the 2 corner portrait tiles and the rest are 6x1.5 inch and 3 x 1.5 inch tiles. Very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround. There is some residual mortar and the portrait tiles have a few edge abrasions(please see closeup pictures) The most common surround would be 30" high and across. If you need more tiles for your fireplace surround I can flesh out this design with the mottled tiles. I have many antique tiles listed.

This one features a typical Victorian floral pattern with a slight European taste to it. The tile is in good condition with only a few little chips/nibbles to the edges. 2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown/taupe relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. Just some smoke stains, with a printed design registration number and'S.H. 79' plus a raised Staffordshire knot within a triangle. They look more pink than brown in one light and then more brown than pink in another light. There are 86 larger tiles measuring 3" by 1.5" and just under 1/2" tall. There are also 34"half" tiles measuring approx. 1.5" by 1.5" by 1/2" tall(some are slightly larger) While I attempted to give them a thorough cleaning. Some still have some residue on them. Late 19th century art tile made by the J and JG low art tile company of Chelsea Massachusetts. Low went out of business in 1912. Central flower surrounded by a vine and leaves. Signed on the back. Moss green glaze. Low did a series of"fabric" tiles. This is a chevron pattern. Or. Charlie Brown's sweater. Measures 4-1/4"x 4-1/4" x1/2" thick. A tiny nick at one corner. Otherwise a greAt example. The sale is for 1 of these great looking antique tiles surround that were made by the Trent Tile company of New Jersey in the late 1800's. They measure 6 x 1.5" I have the 3 x 1.5 inch tiles in this so very few or none of the mottled tiles should need to be cut for the surround with the traditional staggered design. The most common surround would be 30" high and across( or fifteen 6 inch squares) This comes out to be 60 tiles since 4 of these make a 6" square. Very hard to find matched male/female pair of Kensington Tile Co Victorian 6" X 6" tiles. Male tile slightly thicker than the female as shown in pix. He is 1/2" thick, she is just over 3/8" thick. Gorgeous golden/yellow color(pix don't do the color justice! brilliant glaze w/typical crazing to be expected for their age. Some very minor chips/scuffs as shown in pix(largest chip is right on the lower left corner of the female tile- two very minor/small nicks on her ear as shown and a slight nick on one of the locks of the male tile's hair. Very nice even high gloss glazing in good condition otherwise! Payment within 24 hours please. Insurance included in shipping charges for amount of winning bid.

Superb hand painted daisy flower tile c.1890. A slight relief to the face of the tile. The colours are bold and striking and blend beautifully on the foliage and background. Brown. Green, orange and cream. Bright clean and interesting majolica. Some light scratches and grazing to right hand edge. Reverse fairly clean. But some residue remains.
