KEELEY CAST IRON ASH SHAKER HANDLE This old cast iron KEELEY ash shaker stove handle would have been fastened onto a coal stove and used to"shake" the grate causing the ashes and cinders to fall down from the firebox into the ash pan. The grate would be shaken in short vigorous strokes that moved the grates back-and-forth allowing the ashes to fall through. To keep a good fire burning. It was important to shake enough of the ashes to allow the proper amount of air flow up through the coal. This old handle has a 1.25 inch hexagonal opening and a nicely shaped pierced handle. Overall space width of the handle is 6.5 inches and it has a 9 inch arm extension. Some slight surface rust inside the hex opening. But still a good solid and functional tool. This antique old stove lifter was made for the"Andes" brand of stoves. Ranges& heaters, made by the Phillips& Clark Stove Co of Geneva, New York. they were a famous& well know 19th& early 20th century New York stove foundry. this lifter is identical to the"dealer trade" lifters pictured in the 1891 Griswold cast iron products catalog. Offered is a cast iron stove eye lifter and shaker wrench tool. These were used to lift the eyes. Or lids on old cook and heating stoves. This piece is unmarked beyond"446, so I am unable to connect it with a particular maker or era. It is obviously an older piece. It's a particularly robustly made piece with a smallish lifting lug. The lifter is about 8-1/2 inches long and weighs about 11 ounces. I can't find the slightest damage beyond light use marks and some surface roughness. Likely from the original casting. It has a smaller half-moon shaped lifting lug, measuring about 1/2 by 1/8 inch. These can sometimes be ground a bit to fit a particular eye. It has one of those odd shaker wrench tools opposite the lifting lug, and there is a bit of casting sprue remaining in it. This part of the tool may also be for adjusting interior ... morevents, particularly in cookstove ovens. I've posted lots of pictures so you can look it over. For sale is a rare& very old& primitive antique kitchen& cooking utensil tool. It was designed for several chores around the hearth including lifting the lids off of wood& coal stoves& also has a curved hook like design for lifting the bails of hot kettles& cook pots, also has a opening above the stove lift tongue to hook on the side of a kettle or pot& tilt the pot too. also has a small"hammer" head underneath the stove lift for driving tacks& small nails around the house. it does have a large series of holes all thru the handle, designed to help keep it from getting too hot on the stove or at the kettle. a lot of these old primitive kitchen tools have a long gone broken off end or hook on them, this 1 has no damage anywhere. it is made of cast iron, it has the"gate-marks" on the side showing ... morewere it was cast in a mold, the ruler tells the size, I haven't cleaned it as some people like the old surface patina, it does have the surface oxidation as shown but no pitting or damage. would clean right up to clean cast metal if desired. a very unique tool made way back around turn of the 19th-20th century when making crazy designs for multiple task uses around the kitchen was in style. please see my other listings for 2 other early primitive iron kitchen multi use tools, can combine shipping on multiple items if you want a of them. please email with any questions before bidding as all sales are final. One was chromed originally but is now somewhat rusty but usable. it is marked A 4. the other is flat black in color and has no markings at all. both are the exact same size.
