The handle looks to have the following numbers/letters on it, MAJESTIC RANGES" Some of the letters are on real clear on the handle in the pictures because I think the paint is a little thicker in places and makes the letters a little hard to see. The length of the insides of the square ends look to be about 5/8 inch or a little less each of the four ways on the square and the circles on the square end each look to be about about 1/2 inch in diameter. KEELEY CAST IRON ASH SHAKER HANDLE This old cast iron KEELEY ash shaker stove handle would have been fastened onto a coal stove and used to"shake" the grate causing the ashes and cinders to fall down from the firebox into the ash pan. The grate would be shaken in short vigorous strokes that moved the grates back-and-forth allowing the ashes to fall through. To keep a good fire burning. It was important to shake enough of the ashes to allow the proper amount of air flow up through the coal. This old handle has a 1.25 inch hexagonal opening and a nicely shaped pierced handle. Overall space width of the handle is 6.5 inches and it has a 9 inch arm extension. Some slight surface rust inside the hex opening. But still a good solid and functional tool. Hi you are bidding on this handle. I don't know much about it. Was past down to me from a family member. He told me at one time that was over 80 years old. There is a name and# on it the# I'm not sure it's 605 or 606 or it could even be 90 something. Also the name I can't make it out I can see a couple of letters on it but not sure what the last two are. If you know about Victorian things you just might be able to know what this goes to I believe it's a stove shaker but not sure. Antique Wood Coal Stover Shaker Handle Square Socket
This Antique Wood Coal Stover Shaker Handle has been gently restored. What does gently restored mean? The overall objective is to preserve as much as the old tool or item with a good balance of lifetime patina as possible without the use of power tools. The first step is to dismantle the tool down to individual parts. Metal is typically initially cleaned using mineral oil. Or a weak solution of washing soda and water and if necessary brief burst of electrolysis on to remove and or convert rust to black oxide. For other metals such as brass a brief immersion in a weak solution of food grade citric acid may be necessary. Whichever method is best, a scotch brite plastic cleaning pad is used with water so the underlying metal is not damaged. A heat gun is immediately used to blow dry and eliminate moisture to which is followed by a hand rubbed ... morecoat of a mix of orange and mineral oil to seal the pores. It is often necessary to repeat this step until a satisfactory result is achieved. After letting the oil“soak in” for a day or so, the item is wiped cleaned then hand rub in a purchased but diluted orange oil bees wax mix to seal it. For wood a weak solution of oil soap and water is used to remove grime, old oils and dirt which is air or blowed dry with a heat gun. This is followed by a hand rub of“feed and wax" Normally all other materials are simply wiped clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth as appropriate. If the situation requires it, a soft brass bristle brush or“0000” steel wool is ocassionaly used. A couple of items should be noted. The first is this gentle process may not remove all rust or dirt, etc, as there is always a balance of limiting restoration to not affect patina. The second is that tools and items are not conditioned for use such as sharpening, tightening or replacement of parts.
