The surface is very rusty so you can hardly see the original surface, but the wonderful embossed lettering still stands out dramatically. It is doubtful ... morethat someone out there needs a replacement door for their furnace, so this handsome piece would be great repurposed as interior or garden wall decor. The rusty patina is super attractive and I have left it as it was found. There is a portion of the slate lining still hanging on as can be seen in the photo of the back view. The shape of the door is a trapezoid with the top width being 11-3/4" while the bottom width is 12-3/4" Height is 11" x 1-1/2" thickness at the widest part of the angled back brace and it weighs 9 pounds 14 ounces. Cast Iron GRATE COAL STOVE SHAKER Tapered Nut fits Wood Cook Stoves Furnace
Antique cast iron'grate shaker' handle. This tool is used to rattle the grates in cast iron wood stoves or coal furnaces to shake/sift the ashes to the bottom for collection and removal from the stove. Leaving the larger pieces of charcoal behind to be burned. This particular handle was found in the basement of an old hardware store. I don't believe it was used. when I acquired it. It had a cotton string with a paper tag on it, and was very dusty. I wiped it down with mineral oil. The only stamping is"10" as seen in the photo. The square end is tapered to fit assorted size grates. It appears to have a silvery finish which is flaking off. Approximate overall footprint length is 9.5" From clean. Non-smoking location.
