Vintage Oval Silver Plated 11 inch Double Serving Dish, Arts Silver Co.
For your consideration is this vintage oval silver plated 2 piece vegetable serving dish that originally belonged to my parents. The date of origin is unknown. But I would guess this item is at least 50 years old. This is a two-piece convertible(double serving) dish, which means it can be used as a single covered dish, or the lid can be inverted to become a second serving dish. The larger bottom piece measures 11” in length. Both pieces have a beautiful braided edge. The lid has two decorative handles. The bottom dish is marked on the bottom: ART S. Co. S.P.C. 146 There are some marks. Minor scratches from use, and minimal tarnish. I see no dents and the handles are secure. There is a social security number etched into the bottom of the base. Piece has been cleaned but could use a bit more polishing to make it shine its best. This can be used as a lidded serving dish or you can use the lid as a second dish. Very nice piece. Not flimsy or worn. There is a monogram engraved on top. It looks like"EK" The piece is hallmarked under the rim but I cannot tell you who the maker is. It is stamped Made in England. For Auction this very nice vintage Edwardian Gadrooned Silver Plated Tureen Double Serving Dish- c 1920- 1950. This is a nice clean Tureen double serving dish with a removable handle. Edwardian design. Double dish with removable handle and nice deep gadrooned border decoration. Stamped EPNS Made in England. The Tureen is in general very good vintage condition. Commensurate with materials, great age, careful use and good storage- clean& bright. The only thing to note is some very minor plate rub on the underside base only and some light usage marks within the lower dish. Silverplate Covered Casserole Dish with Monogram D B H in an oval design with scratches and still some patina. The handle removes and the top could actually be used as an extra serving piece. The hallmark L.B.S. Co. and the pictures indicate by the crown it was made in Sheffield England. Has Scratches on bottom of bowl. And on inside some plate loss with more scratches. I quickly lightly polished but it could use more or if you love the natural patina. I didn't polish it all off. The Monogram stands for my husbands Grandmother. We just have too many pieces now. I think to the early 1920s, or possibly a little earler It is a heavy thing. With a good depth of plate. It is in good condition. A few surface scratches, but nothing that has gone through the plate, and just a couple of little areas of wear to the base, where they can't be seen in normal use. No dents nor dings It has a diameter of about 9 inches or 23cm and a depth of about 1.5 inches or 4cm Certainly in very good condition. With even less wear than you would expect to see in an item of this type or age They are beautiful. With a depth of shine that you just don't seem to get with more modern pieces. Wonderful items. Covered and double lined silverplate chafing/serving dish
Back in the olden days. Makers of goods, whether it be silver, gold, ceramic, porcelain, wood, etc. would leave their mark to show their pride in craftsmanship. Consumers, in the olden days, didn't want their goods marked so the"makers mark" was usually hidden. along edges, on the bottom, within the decorative area. Nowadays, people collect based on the makers and we want to see the makers mark. Isn't that funny? This three part serving dish had no markings that I could find. and I did an exhaustive search. It is similar to the Poole Silver Co serving dish I have also advertised in this auction. It is 12 X 9 X 3 1/2. It is silverplate. It has three parts. the cover with handles. The bottom with feet, and the best part is that their is another plain dish inserted that allows the bottom to be filled with water(usually heated) ... moreto help keep the food warm in transport. How clever the people were back in the olden days. The dishes are in fair shape. Tarnished and scratched. Yes, but again no pits or dents. However, the handles, both, are beginning to erode and the silver plate is flaking off. I shot a picture to show the future buyer so there are no surprises. Please consider combining this purchase with other items in my auction to save on shipping costs that can be combined. As I organize and prepare to downsize. I am divesting myself of goods. This sale includes some clothing. China, silver, crystal, jewelry, vases, boxes, jars, plates, figurines and knick knacks galore. These are items that have resided in my home.
