The dish is quite beautiful especially the handle styled in the design of grapes and grape vine or branch. The piece has a cartouche or family armorial( Crowned Lion with tongue extended) engraved in the center of the front of the lid. The covered dish is approximately 12 1/4 inches in length with a substantial weight of just over 1.7Kg. the bottom of the dish is numbered 1303. The dish is in very good condition; however. Elkington Silver Plate Canadian National Steamships Shell Shaped Candy Dish
This is not just an antique Elkington silver plated shell shaped dish. It is a piece of history. It features the Canadian National Steamships logo on the top of the handle. On the back of the handle you will see the Elkington Plate logo as well as a style number# 23128 above it. Also the letter T marking. The shell dish is in great condition with the obvious sign of age(surface scratches and a couple tiny knicks) as it is an antique. However, the plating is still in good shape. There is a bit of a bend on the side of the shell that looks like it may have been dropped but it is not very noticeable unless you look at it from the side. I have tried to show the slight bend in the shell lip in picture#5- you can see a slight raise on the 5 scalloped edge on the left. I'm not totally sure on the date of this piece but I believe it is from the ... moreearlier part of the 1900's. If you are a collector of Steamship or Railroad memorabilia. I was invited, with others, to tender for the job of clearing a bungalow and adjacent outbuildings prior to their sale, I viewed the premises, submitted my offer and promptly forgot about it. As I remember, the job was a dual application where the bungalow and the buildings had to be valued and priced separately. Some very stringent specifications were imposed as to when the work could commence, vehicular and pedestrian access and a whole rainbow of minor regulations. These, according to an executive who was present at the time, had all been used and passed down the family over the years. SUPERB 19thC ELKINGTON SILVER PLATED DISH, DECORATED WITH CHERUBS, PAN & GOATS
A stunning neo classical antique silver plated dish/ centrepiece made by Elkington& Co. It is fully stamped on the base with the date letter N for 1874. The dish is ornately decorated. In the centre it has Pan playing his pipes to three cherubs which are dancing to his music, at each end it has a scrolling shell shaped handle with a goats head below and on each side it has neo classical maidens heads and entwined foliage. It measures 13 1/2" long x 7" deep x 3 1/2" tall to the top of the handle. There is a slight lifting to the top part at the end.
