Antique Architectural Item, Carved Wood Wall Light Bracket Sconce Arm in Gold
Antique Carved Wood Architectural Piece. Wall Sconce Up for your consideration is this nice antique wood wall sconce or light bracket/arm. Gold or gilt in color. Has a wall base with an arm extending from the base with a carved laurel detail, could have been an electrified piece at one time with a threaded metal tubing opening at the back and at the top of the extended piece, there is a small piece taken out of the base(see pic) and it has a crack at the inside of the arm close to the base that is cracked through but still intact although it is loose. Not sure if it is staying in place because of the metal tubing inside or it is has been pinned but I would reinforce it somehow if you use it to hold anything. Antique Wood Hand Carved Bearded Man/Knight Corbel/Shelf
A stunning hand carved antique corbel featuring the face of a bearded man. His headwear suggests he might be a knight or a saint(given that he's wearing a visor) and perhaps this corbel comes from a church. The origin is unknown. Corbel was removed from its original position and attached with a wire in the back to be hung up on a wall. Presumably 1800s. Item is in good condition for its age- the wood has expanded over time in some places causing some cracks and there is a chipping on the nose as well as above the face. On the rim of the rectangular shelf part(as seen in photos) It is made of solid wood and quite heavy- corbel weighs 5.3 lbs. Antique Gothic Architectural Element 1800s French Carved Wood Reliquary Corbel
This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich. Dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming ... moreand drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements. Prominent nose, and a detailed open mouth showing tongue and teeth, and from which spills a branch/stem bearing an apple with leaves around. Vintage LARGE Heavily Hand Carved Wood Mexican Santa Fe Wall Shelf Bracket Sconce Pair New to eBay. Here's a pair of large beautiful vintage hand carved wall shelves to display your treasures. They're art for your art! I love the large size& ethnic look of these unusual sconce shelves. I don't know the exact age or origin of them, as they were purchased from a local estate sale. They definitely have a Mexican look to them in the style& designs of the carving. The finish& the wood, itself. The shelves are both primitive& ornate, with raised heavily carved leaf designs covering the front& sides. These would look great in any primitive. Santa Fe or artsy decor. I've shown them with a few of my own Native American collectibles, just to give you an idea of what they look like as display pieces. The added objects ... morein the photos are not included. I love how each sconce is large enough to hold a grouping of objects. The wood is fairly heavy, each shelf weighing over 3 pounds. The shelves both have a distressed, wood burned finish. Both have some subtle age wear. But both display very nicely. One appears to have a couple of spots of wood filler on the front(which blends in with the dark burned areas. Originally, only masonry was given the corbel name, while wooden structures of the same purpose were called"braggers" or"tassels. Progressively, the corbel moniker began being applied to a wider range of materials, and today, anything with a load bearing or an aesthetic function which resembles the original stone corbel is given the name. Wood corbels have long been an integral part of architectural design in China, where together with unique structural elements such as interlocking wooden brackets( dougong) they are one of the most important elements in traditional Chinese architecture. While dougong were originally structural. And became decorative, ... morecorbels were seen as mainly decorative, though also structural. However, the focus slowly changed and design became a primary feature. Decorative wood corbels offered Chinese master craftsmen a tremendous versatility in design opportunity, with a myriad of possibilities for both the style of the carving and the subject itself.
