This exceptional 100+ year old architectural element was inadvertently salvaged when it fell from considerable height during a remodeling project of a church. The fat friar clutching his keys and lantern landed on his head and was rescued by one of the workmen who subsequently sold it to the consignor. It has remained in untouched condition with chips and loss to the edges and a flat spot on his noggin from the inauspicious landing. We have a companion to this one; identical in size with a different face. These were produced in the 1970s for a locally owned antiques store specializing in architectural salvage. Antique Gothic Architectural Element 1800s French Carved Wood Reliquary Corbel
This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich. Dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming ... moreand drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements. Superb mid 19thc gothic mahogany wood carved corbel of a grotesque. Dating c.1850. All carving in relief with particularly fine and intricate carved detail to this gothic grotesque's face with deep set eyes. Prominent nose, and a detailed open mouth showing tongue and teeth, and from which spills a branch/stem bearing an apple with leaves around. Measures some 10.25" height x 7" max width x depth of 1.5" at the top of the head of the grotesque. Superb 18thc gothic oak wood carved corbel of a bearded male figure holding a shield with the crest of a grotesque carved to the centre. All carving in relief with particularly fine and intricate carved detail to this gothic and heraldic corbel. The bearded figure has a bare upper torso. Above head is a cross with a bundle of fruits. The male figure holds a crest which is superbly carved with the head of a grotesque. The lower part of the corbel is carved with fruits and leaves.
