Two African Antique Busts TERRA COTTA CLAY HEAD ARTIFACT
Uncle Ed had these sitting on his fire place mantel as long as he can remember. I think he moved here in the late 60's. There is a chip or two that reviles that they are made out of some type of clay therefore we are describing them as Terra Cot-ta. I have shown them to two experts that could not give me a value but said they are most likely Nigerian. They are each 24 inches tall with the stand. The heads alone are 18 inches from top to bottom and weigh 6.5 LBS each. The stands are 8 inches tall. One is a male and the other a female. A metal rod is attached to the head to drop into a hole on the top of the stand. There are no markings on the heads. Handmade! They will be shipped in separate boxes.

WHAT ARE THESE Original"stock design" plates produced by Midland Terra Cotta to be distributed to architects. Contractors and developers for the use of their terra cotta. Produced about 1915 under the direction of architect George Elmslie(later Purcell and Elmslie Architects) Elmslie was one of the last and closest associates of architect Louis Sullivan who died in 1924. Many of these designs bear Sullivan's direct influence. Sullivan and Elmslie kept close contact and it can be assumed that Sullivan saw and commented directly on many of these designs. Anyone familiar with Louis Sullivan will probably also know the connection to Frank Lloyd Wright. ORIGINAL PLATES: There were apparently 100 plates issues over a period of time. Lamp stands approximately 28 inches in height which includes the finial. The base has a circumference of approximately 39 inches around. Comes with matching finial but no lamp shade. Has the Mackenzie Childs hallmark stamped on the bottom of the base and on the bottom of the finial. Please note that I took the felt off the bottom to take a picture of the hallmark. For your consideration: A VINTAGE 12" ROUND CHALKWARE WALL HANGING THAT FEATURES THE SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC. Rich Terra Cotta with a green/gold patina. Measures 1/2" thick plus 1/2" for center design and features. Substantial hanger inserted into back. No major chips or cracks but several nicks and areas of missing paint along lower rims. See photos for detail) No date of origin or manufacturer name but I have owned for more than 30 years. Weighs 2.8 lbs. unpacked.
