Fabulous Antique French Wooden Shabby Gilded CORBEL Rods Holders Pair
Such old corbels in this design are a rare find. As these will hold a tapestry or curtain rod or you can weave a drape through the circular opening. You can also set a shelf on top. Former owner states that the corbels are originally from France. Circa 1900. They are rendered from wood and have remnants of old paint showing under the old gold paint on top. Some wear commensurate with age. A little chipping, rubs, etc. and if you look closely you can see small areas of little chips having been repaired in a couple places, there are some cracks. Splits, etc. Please see images-both are structurally sound. All the imperfections only add charm and authenticity. The plywood backs with hooks are a later addition for hanging easily on the wall. Antique Gothic Architectural Element 1800s French Carved Wood Reliquary Corbel
This most unusual architectural element of the early to middle 1800s is hand carved from rich. Dark brown mahogany and shows handsawn marks on the reverse. It is most likely European in origin and measures 18” tall x 30” wide x 6” deep and appears to have comprised the face of a corner shelf/bracket that supported a carved statue. Its center features a 10 3/8” diameter roundel with 6 1/8” inner diameter and a depth varying from 2 ½”3 ½” deep. I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. In any event, the surface is beautifully carved by a master craftsman and the surface retains the original rich French Polish surface. It is grimy with no bad losses…just some trimming ... moreand drilled holes on the bottom tip where its was incorporated into other woodwork elements. These Corbels where made of solid wood and beautifully hand carved. They are in good salvage condition with some cracks and chips in the wood.
