GUATEMALAN MAYAN Native Folk Art DANCE of the Conquest MASK Dance Play
Originating within old Guatemalan Mayan native traditions and beliefs. A pre-contact tribal dance celebration was hijacked and changed into the Dance of the Conquest by the Spanish conquerors and Catholic Church to meet their purposes of quelling the conquered and brainwashing the native people into believing a rewritten history. Ever since then. The Catholic church has continuously and unabashedly promoted the dance-play’s performance throughout Guatemala to reinforce its hold on the people. We know this very old mask represents a Spaniard in the dance play because of the mustache. Sadly. Someone over-painted the entire mask with green acryllic paint(for a Halloween mask in the 1970’s perhaps? The green paint is coming off and could be easily removed completely because the paint below it is oil based. The wood mask appears to have originally ... morebeen painted red. And then over-painted in pink and brown paint before the eyes and mustache were painted on. Please see the close-up photos– especially at the edges of the mask where the red is most visible. The mask measures approximately 9” x 5.5” x 3” I took the hanging string off about half way through taking the photos. I would have removed the green paint but I like the effect. I believe the mask is from the early 20 th Century or earlier. The carving of the mask is true folk art. As is its first primitive painting, as is the effect of the over-painting after years of storage and handling and time- a triple treasure! And then there is the whole story of the Dance of the Conquest– this mask has it all- truly folk art with a fascinating history! PLEASE see my EXCELLENT FEEDBACK and BID with CONFIDENCE! If you have ANY questions. Please ask. I'm really easy to get along with and try my best to make every transaction a pleasant experience fo r all involved! I pack VERY well and always TRY to ship QUICKLY. Please note that the last photo shows this mask with a 2nd mask made from a coconut shell that I intend to list as soon as I find out more about it. Large Antique Mexican Copper Church Collection Bowl Hand Hammered Por Aprecio
A fabulous large hand hammered copper bowl measuring 12 inches(31 cm) in diameter and 3 inches(7.5 cm) high. Por Aprecio" In gratitude) and a flower hammered in the center of the bowl For collection at church services We bought it from the estate of a man who had lived in Mexico until the 1930's. He willed this and a few other items to his nephew in Pennsylvania when he died. We bought it at the estate auction of the nephews possessions about 5 years ago. I date it from somewhere right around 1850 if not a bit earlier. Examples of copper church bowls can be seen in museum collections- but the form is rarely found The decoration on this one is wonderful and while worn it is mostly intact As for condition. Quite good. Some wear and smoothness to the hammering commensurate with age. Really nice rich old patina with a little bit of green ... moretinging to the copper. Fairly heavy- weighing a bit over a kilo. Please examine the photos above for the most accurate description and pictures of flaws. Antique Hand Carved South American Mahogeny Water Bucket w/Braided Handles
I took this old bucket to The Antiques Road Show in KC hoping it was REALLY old and valuable. And also wanted some information about the piece. After some confering they said it was hand carved out some kind of South American mahogeny, probably made between 1900-1920. He valued it between $95-120 dollars,so it wasn't as old or valuable as I was thinking/hoping,but still a very cool old piece. It was carved from one large piece of wood and the handles were braided from some kind of plant. There are two large cracks in the wood on the top and a small crack near the bottom(see pic's) but what a great decorative piece. It measures 9 1/2"T x 9 3/4"W from handle to handle. Shipping includes tracking.

Folk& Native American Art This AGUAYO or LLIJLLA is a typical Andean textile of pre-Columbian influence. It is very old and made with nature dyes. Every one of these textiles has a story to tell: weaving of the yarn. Colors, thread and figures in it are characters and life experiences of the communities and/or the artisans themselves. Measure approximately 38" x 50 used good with some damage please see photos. This real Aguayo is a hand made used by women from the Plateau of Peru and Bolivia. Each woman has her own aguayo. It can be fabricated with wool of llama. Alpaca or sheep; it is dyed with natural vibrant colors. These big-squared weavings are used to carry babies and small children ... moreon one’s back, to seat, put food, as well as all sorts of products. Formerly, it was men who used these aguayo weaves. There are 7 zones where the aguayos are fabricated: the North zone of La Paz. including La Paz city) zones of Oruro, Cochabamba, Potosi, and finally Chuquisaca. Each zone has its own characteristics, passing through the surrealism of the Jalq'a weaves(known as the weaves of Potolo, in Sucre) the elegance of the Macha weaves in Potosi and the extravagance of the Tarabuco weaves. When weaving, these pieces of aguayo, men and women write stories about their communities, symbols of their culture or things they have dreamt for this work. Of course, these stories and symbols depend of the different regions. In fact, each region has its own colors, drawings and techniques. They make their weave through abstract drawings of naive and figurative representations or include surrealist monsters. 0 0 1 75 429 Edelman 3 1 503 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Please send me any messages with questions you may have before bidding. BEAUTIFUL PRE COLUMBIAN "COLIMA" CULTURE FLAT FIGURE - MEXICO - NO RESERVE!
BEAUTIFUL PRE COLUMBIAN"COLIMA" CULTURE FLAT FIGURE- MEXICO- NO RESERVE! This incredible Colima Culture Pre Columbian Coquero figure is a very old antiquity dating back to around 100 BC- 250 AD. This is quite an exceptional museum-worthy artifact! This sculpture comes out of the Estate of renowned Hollywood Actor. Christian Rub. Rub is best known for playing Disney's Mister Geppetto in Pinocchio. This is one of two artifacts listings this week. Be sure to view our others listings! About Colima Mexico: The state was home to a number of pre-Hispanic cultures as part of Western Mexico. Archeological evidence dates human occupation of the area as far back as 1500 BCE. With sites here contemporary with San Lorenzo on the Gulf Coast and Tlatilco in the Valley of Mexico. One period of the area’s development is called the Los Ortices ... moreera which began around 500 BCE. During this time the elements which characterize the pre-Hispanic peoples of Colima appear such as shaft tombs and a distinctive ceramic style called“rojo bruñido” or burnished red. The next phase called Comala, covers the time period from around 100 to 600 CE, centered on a site of the same name. Comala people would perfect burnished red pottery and develop representations of people and animals with skill and fluid lines. The best known of these figures are known as the“fattened dogs” The Comala site shows influence from Teotihuacan. Around 500 CE, another site in Armería developed along the river of the same name. The Chanal site was active from the 6th to the 15th centuries and was the main culture for the Colima area. Belonging to this culture was a number of smaller sites and most of the ones known and explored to date. After Chanal the largest related site is La Campana but most contain pyramidal bases and plazas with structures often containing rounded edges. Images of Huehueteotl and Tlaloc appear with this culture. Which may indicate the origins of the cultures that ultimately settled central Mexico. There is one other site cal

A big painting Spanish colonial of Mexico 1591circa/Signed
A big painting Spanish colonial of Mexico 1591circa/Signed The Crucifixon oil painting/Signed This Mexican painting of the Crucifixion. Dated 1591, was painted by a Spanish monk or friar, possibly Franciscan name: Felipe de Castro. The first workshops of painting the church led the Indian labor, in order to produce images that help evangelizing the local Indians to Catholicism. It is important to say that many artists highlighted as primitive church in the new world. The use of basic colors and stronger than is typical of this work of art all framed within the European Baroque darkness. This is not a work of great artistic quality but it is a historical picture that reflects a very hard time 16th century. It is even more rare because it is signed and dated by the author. Which means it was created for a monastery or private chapel. From the ... morepoint of view of Mexican colonial painting very few native artists excelled at first do not believe this to be the case. Most likely is that Don Felipe de Castro was a Spanish who came to the Americas to promote the european religion in the new world. It is IMPORTANT to note that it was common in the 17th and 18th century the elaboration robes and silver decorations to be placed on some religious paintings of the time. This is the case which have been nuns who develop these garments with great warm threads as the threads of gold and silver. We believe that the crown of thorns is the original painting possibly positioned in the mid-17th and the clothes of Christ could not be the original as it should be changed as they were damaging over time. We believe that the current dress christ it may be the beginning of 20th.Todos these accessories were added to the paintings after its original development by Don Felipe de Castro. CONDITION: In general the state of the painting is very well for its age. Only minor wear with the passage of time. The painting by our visual assessment. Had a restoration posible in the 40 or 50 of the 20th century, we see that the fabric was overl

Antique (19th Cent.) Guatemalan Dance Mask Alvarado to Portocarrero Conversion
This antique mask has seen some things in its life! It started out as a"Pedro de Alvarado" But during its last leg of life was was transformed into a"Pedro Portocarrero" Pedro Portocarrero was Alvardo's right hand man during the conquest and looked very similar(minus the blond i.e. gold hair) I am assuming the cost of gold paint was the sole reason that this lovely mask ever witnessed this transformation; In that way. Its a very interesting piece of history and certainly not something done afterthefact by a collector. Although there is no moreria(rental shop) masks on the back of this mask there are several things that strongly attest to its master craftsmanship and time/dedication to create it. As of late. I am also convinced that there were far fewer reasons to even have moreria marks on a mask this age(the community ... morewas smaller, more close knit, and there were even fewer morerias.so all reasons why one might not be concerned over confusion of mask-ownership. Please take note. There appears to be an old repair as most obviously seen from the rear of the mask running vertically on the right. Notice the tongue? Look inside. its the first I've ever seen. a peg of wood has been inserted to look like a tongue. Also notice the way the skin wrinkles as it meets the upper nose. an impressive artist capturing of this subtle detail. The carver also went to great lengths to ensure this mask fit snugly. Was deeply carved, and was comfortable to wear in the nose and chin areas Look at the tip of the nose. this thing has probably close to a dozen paint layers in terms of thickness. Its impressive! To me paint layers are rather remarkable. to my knowledge repairs and repaints are only done as necessary.I.e. a moreria shop wouldn't just repaint a mask unless it needed it. So if this mask was danced once annually and had say 10 paint layers then this would rather easily attest to far more years of actual use. Check this interesting article out.its a picture of a antique mask and the paint layers
Ethnography of the Yagua, RARE Hardcover 1st Edition, Signed by Author, 1943
This is a very Rare 1st Edition hardcover edition. Signed by the author, Mr Paul Fejos. last image is from Wikipedia and is of the author, it is NOT in the book, but please compare handwriting to the signature and inscription in book. Paul Fejos(January 27. 1897– April 23, 1963) was a Hungarian-born director of feature films and documentaries who worked in a number of countries including the United States. He also studied medicine in his youth and became a prominent anthropologist later in life. From Wikipedia) 1935–1941: Career as ethnographic filmmaker By 1935 Fejos had grown tired of narrative films and their inauthentic sets and stories. That year he was sent by Nordisk to scout filming locations in Madagascar and loved the country so much that he ended up staying for nine months. He filmed over 30.000 feet of footage of animals, plants, ... moretribal societies and local customs, all of which was unusable for a narrative feature. He also collected many artifacts and eventually donated them to the Royal Danish Geographical Society. When he returned to Denmark the unusable footage that he had shot was brought to the attention Svensk Filmindustri's Gunnar Skoglund who commissioned a series of six short documentaries to be made from the footage. These films included Black Horizons(Svarta Horisenter) The Dancers of Esira, Beauty Salon in the Jungle, The Most Useful Tree in the World, Sea Devil and The Graves of our Father, all released between 1935 and 1936.1] In 1936, he married Inga Arvad, a Danish journalist, noted for a romantic relationship with John F. Kennedy and known as the mistress of Axel Wenner-Gren. Arvad had appeared in Flight of the millions and the two remained married until the early 1940s. Inspired by his newfound passion for cultures and history. Fejos studied cultural anthropology at the Museum of Copenhagen in 1936 and studies under Dr. Thompson. He was then commissioned by Svensk to make a series of Ethnographic film in such countries as Indonesia, the Philippines, New Guinea, Ceylon and T

Post Pre Columbian Spanish Colonial brass battle stirrup Peru artifact relic
This unusual lovely conquistador brass stirrup was made in Peru during the Post Inca period Spanish Colonial rule. It is a heavy item and it still has a bright sheen with some tarnish and minor scratches left from age. The metal stirrup with metal plate bottom provided protection in in battle and a stable platform when fighting. They may have been used in a ceremonial display or used during a parade or inspection of a local troops when they were dressed Notice the bar on top for the leather straps. From the saddle. The hole provided drainage. Interesting is the décor on the side of the stirrup of an Incan figure head. The stirrup bottom is flat with a triangular hole in it. You can see the colorfully dressed uniformed Spanish troops in their colorful array. Horses and all, on a parade ground or a brass stirrup as a ceremonial item or ... moregift. Really nice artifact and one usually overlooked as it was a post Inca period Colonial rule item. It does show the influence of the Inca artistic culture on the stirrup. Ca: 1850 AD Hand embossed with metal work. A great piece to shine up a room as décor and bring conversation about olden times in the Spanish conquest of the Peruvian people. Please look at pictures and contact me with questions before bidding Provenance: purchased from an antiquities/antique dealer. EFFIGY HEAD PENDANT, COSTA RICA, PRE-COLUMBIAN
EFFIGY HEAD PENDANT. COSTA RICA. PRE-COLUMBIAN Height: 2 1/2" Width: 2" Depth: 1 1/4" Weight: 6.1 oz This stone effigy head pendant was acquired at a private Bel Air estate mansion sale. The owner. A former 1960s television producer, had an extensive collection of Costa Rican antique stone tools, ceremonial pieces, and grinding stone bowls. This is an absolutely RARE and highly unusual stone pendant. Carved from a green-tinted stone. This artifact has grooves etched into the face, revealing a prominent, triangular nose, grooved lips and left ear. Examining this piece closely reveals the pendant holes drilled into the top/rear of the piece. When dangled from a string the entire effigy head lists to the right-now, note the right ear area: it is severely worn down, no doubt due to years of swinging/ rubbing against sweat infused ... morechest-skin. Minor abrasion streaks and wear/use patterns. Some chinks/dings along rear. The piece is DAMNED heavy to be wearing around the neck for long periods. But that is exactly what the wear-patterns on this artifact suggest. Why bother? This pendant is clearly an effigy piece, perhaps of an ancestor/god to offer protection.from enemies in battle? Something drove this person to attach this dangling stone from his/her neck. This is an ASTONISHINGLY RARE. Clearly personal neck ornament used by ancient Mayans in the Costa Rican area at some dim, prehistoric past time. Own what another owned! Posted with

MOLA ART KUNA INDIANS TWO TEXTILE TUCAN BIRDS
11" x 14" mola inside a 22" x 18" oak frame with black matting. A mola is a cloth item. Made by hand by the Kuna Indian women from the San Blas Islands off the northeast coast of Panama. The Kuna have sort of their own country there, separate, yet a part of, Panama. Years ago, when the leaders of the country tried to force new ways and new laws on them, they revolted and won their"independence" from Panama. So, today, they enjoy their own freedoms and customs and have the San Blas area of Panama as their own. The revolt took place in 1925, and as a result, you'll often find molas with a big"25" sewn into them. These molas are probably best described as reverse appliqués. That is. They have several layers of cloth and holes are cut through the upper layers to expose the lower ones. Each seam ... morearound these cutouts is precisely hand sewn to show no edges. Then, they often attach additional colors to the top of the layers to provide more layers and more color. I am always willing to combine shipping whenever possible. So Check out my other items! FACE VESSEL, GAYO POLYCHROME, AD 500 - 1000, GUANACASTE PROVINCE, COSTA RICA
FACE VESSEL. GAYO POLYCHROME, AD 500- 1000, GUANACASTE PROVINCE. COSTA RICA Height: 9 3/4" Width: 7 1/2" Outer Rim Diameter: 5" Weight: 3 lbs 9.7 oz This is a RARE. And currently, impossible to get tripod leg face vessel from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province-on the northwestern side of the country facing the Pacific Ocean. This pot is in very good condition! Minor nicks. Cuts, dings along tripod feet as would be expected. This globular pot with long neck features a relief-extended shut-eyed face with arms holding a tablet with strange markings on it: two vertical cluster of lines with a set of four horizontal between. It is done in the Gayo Polychrome style which dates it somewhere between AD 500 and 1000. Beautiful red-orange glaze is still present throughout the tan-brown base. On the rear are two ... morekneeling warriors holding what appears to be a head with feather dress. Spirit like designs flow above this object. The entire motif on this pot screams satisfaction and/or release(as in death) from the front large-nosed serene face to the somewhat sad-faced. Eyes looking upwards kneeling warriors-a confusing mix of emotion that clearly needs the cultural context to understand what the hell is going on here. This cultural phase of Nicoya Polychrome ceramics took off: everyone apparently wanted what these artisans produced-they are found up/down the coast. But what is also known from this time-based on burial goods-is the existence of ritual specialists with shamanistic powers. This pot falls right into that category. It appears to be a ritualistic. Ceremonial vessel used in some fashion with death/sacrifice/contentment. What strange and bizarre customs did these people practice! But then again. Future urban archeologists will look at some aspect of our glorious 21st century American culture and ask themselves WTF. Included here is a Certificate of Authenticity utilizing the latest technology for artifact analysis- Optically Stimulated Luminescence(OSL) technology. The original.
Lacandon Maya bow and arrows circa 1978
The Lacandon Maya of Chiapas have been making these bows and arrows for the tourist trade for many years. These date from the late 1970s and were collected near Palenque. When there were still enough parrots in the jungle that parrot feathers were used for the fletching. Seven arrows with tips of various stones and wood. Definitely not for hunting or target practice but an interesting ethnographic item. RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fvo%7B%3Dd70f%2Bf%60%60%3E-1447b27f684-0x10e-
Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Wekko Bird Design
Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. Plus it kept it's ruffle at the bottom! 18" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price and let ... morethe market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Firefans - Similar to Published Example
Pikpi Mu(Firefans with Grandma) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Similar to Example Published in Kapp Book. The first time I met Valerie and Kit Kapp. They were showing me over 100 molas, and I asked them, Is there any piece in particular I should get? Val piped up and asked me if I had a"pikpi" mola, and when I said I didn't she told me I had to have one. This is the one I bought that day. Compare it to the example on page 25 of"Mola Art of the San Blas Islands" and you will see that they are very similar, except in the published example the fans are held upright, and in this one they are facing downward. It has a couple of very small splits in the background cloth, which I tend not not notice unless I hold it up to the light. The color, design and execution are really very good. And the look on grandma's face(is that ... morea mustache? is priceless. 20.5" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Eagle
Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Some mola makers excel at using color. Design and spacing to create a design with visceral graphic power. This is a good example. The abstract filler motifs use a wide variety of colors- all mated with red- to make a background that is more than just a background.it's a big part of the visual formula. Oddly, the large eagle is flanked by two sea horses! Note the remarkably dangerous-looking appliqued talons on the eagle. A masterpiece of late-1960s mola art. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 17" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Rare, Early Kit Kapp Collection 1930s-1950s Kuna Mola: Arrows
1930s-1950s Mukan Nasi(Grandma's Arrows) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Everything about this mola tells me it is early.as early as the 1930s. Big size. Early cloth. Wide open spacing around the arrow motifs. Oddly shaped filler motifs aimed every which way(no"picket fence" super-even vertical slits here! Erratic. Uneven cutting and sewing. Bold morsana strip design. A very nice, rare piece that I would not sell except that I have the nearly-identical blousemate to it in my collection also. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Puberty Festival
Kantule-Gan Chicha(Chanters Singing at Inna Puberty Festival) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very large mola has many signs of early age. Including the cloth used, and the size of the"slit design" filler motifs. It was also well loved, and long-worn, so it has some wear and a couple of patched breaks in the bottom layer of cloth. It depicts three Kantule chanters at a Chicha Fest celebrating a young girl's coming of age. Note that two of the Kantules are holding large three-pronged gourd maracas. I love the abstract representation of the chanters' heads- they remind me of African tribal masks. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple ... moreof weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. They store the birds in baskets- which is the subject matter of this mola. It's a very interesting a rare design- note the use of"A" and"V" shapes throughout- and the odd abstract presentation of the head of the bird on the left. Nice color pallet also. I like this one. And haven't seen many, if any, like it. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 18" x 13.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to ... morestart at a low price and let the market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Mountain Dogs
Achu Barbat Sikwi(Mountain Dogs and Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. When Kit Kapp sold me this mola he described it as a"Mukan" or"grandmother" mola. Which to him meant that it was made in the 1930s or 1940s. I don't think it's from the 1930s, but 1940s or 1950s is certainly plausible. It uses a lot of early cloth, including the"LBP" Light Balanced Plainweave) that I have come to associate with pre-World War II molas. It also has a number of the weird"embroidery squiggles" that often appear in early pieces- little lines and zig-zags and odd lines that don't really add to the design. A rare and early piece. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 21.5" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some ... moreof the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Deer
Wasa Tummadi(Large Deer) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big and bold. This mola has a style that is quite unusual- very bold with a minimum of filler elements, and no slit-filler-motifs. It depicts a very large deer, perhaps being stalked by the beast in the upper right corner. Throughout the mola you'll see small"speckles" of embroidery using black thread. I have no idea of the purpose of these random sprinkles, squiggles. But I have seen such things in early molas, so maybe this is even earlier than the'50s.hard to say. A different and interesting piece with graphic strength. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 16.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far ... moremore valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Parker Neal Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Men In Canoe
Men In Cayuco(Canoe) Abstract Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. I'm not entirely sure what's going on in this one. But it looks like two men in a canoe with another man swimming along side. It's an odd shape- quite square- and with a bold drawing style.it might be from the Bayano Mountain Kunas. The drawing style looks to be early 1960s. From one of the most famous early collections. 15.5" x 15" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Their focus was on"story telling" molas, with a particular emphasis on acculturated molas that found their inspiration ... morein western culture- magazine ads, billboards and comic books. Parker Neal Collection Kuna Mola: Famous Kuna Myth
Dragon Eating Moon Myth Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This mola shows one of the great scenes from Kuna mythology. Where the dragon Achusimatupalet eats the moon(shown here in the form of a rabbit embryo, which the Kuna believes resides on the moon) To the right is a beautifully drawn appliqued tree beneath which sits an Ansu- an evil mermaid from Kuna mythology. Below you'll see another bird, what looks to be a shark and a Kuna albino man shooting an arrow at Achusimatupalet to stop him from from eating the moon. Albinos are known for their night vision, and are relied upon for this nightly task. A great representation of one of the great Kuna myths. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Puberty Feast Dance Scene
Inna(Puberty Festival) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. A fun Inna festival mola showing two dressed up people dancing. I like the striped hat on the guy. And the weird dog-head floating between the two of them. Note: this might be a scene from a carnival in Colon or Panama City, but I think it's an Inna dance. Great colorful morsana strip at the top. Some abrasion in spots and a couple of splits in the bottom layer of cloth above the two characters. 21" x 17" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. And went on to make a documentary film about mola making in 1973. An exhibit of Kuna art from the Huber collection was exhibited at several European museums including the British Museum.
