This elongated bronze alloy canoe depicts figures relating to the story of the Dogon genesis in African tribal art. It illustrates the story of the mythical ... moreDogon ark led by Nommo and sent by the creator god Amma to populate and reorganize the earth. The crocodile-shaped creature that forms the bowand stern represents ayo geu , a crocodile that killed Nommo. The seven figures seated in the boat are the original Dogon ancestors, who are frequently found on other sculpted works of African Dogon art, such as attic doors. The sides are decorated with motifs depicting snakes, another element of the bestiary linked to mythology. The Dogon are a people renowned for their cosmogony, their esotericism, their myths and legends.

Damage/Repair, Holes and chips from old bug damage arrested. Shallow crack in torso, encrusted surface, Additional Information: A male figure sitting on a circulr base with arrms on knees. The body is covered with traces of encrusted material that can be seen throughout the body. from the Dogon people of Mali. The surface and texture on this well carved sculpture shows sign of long use and good age. This Dogon figure was used as a shrine piece and a representation of a Nommo. One of the mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to get bessings. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same. They share visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A shrine figure such as this would be kept in the lineage elder’s house and used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. Traces of encrustation are the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. The well carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and detailing of the beard and the sculpting of the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. 75401* All content. Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African SALE Was $210
Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African Type of Object, figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood. pigment, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, general wear. Chips, Additional Information: A standing Female Figure lifting her breasts. The figure is wearing a carved labret under her chin. This well-used female figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Known for their art as well as where they live along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. This female figure is a prime example of classic Dogon sculpture that represents a tradition of carving rarely surpassed for longevity or imagination for Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues ... moreto be created in the present. The figure stands with legs slightly bowed on a rounded base with her arms along her sides carved so that they hang free with her hands on her abdomen. The herniated naval is a commonly illness seen on both men and women in the region. Her exaggerated thighs and buttocks create a parallel to the shape of the breasts and shoulders extending out of the back. The figure may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God. She may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest s shrine where she would have offerings made upon her to infuse her with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. The offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. This is a classic Dogon sculpture and would be a prime piece in a collection as it reflects all the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor who was the local blacksmith.Griaule, M. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating

With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. The artistic influence of Niongom and Tellem traditions on Dogon statues is apparent. The Niongo

The mold is destroyed every time; every object is a unique piece. Excellent work. Interesting collector's item. The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of Mali. South of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. Certain researchers investigating the Dogon have reported that they seem to possess advanced astronomical knowledge. From 1931 to 1956 the French anthropologist Marcel Griaule studied the Dogon. In late 1946 Griaule spent a consecutive thirty-three days in conversations with the Dogon wiseman Ogotemmêli. The source of much of Griaule and Dieterlen's future publications(Dieu d'eau. Entretiens avec Ogotemmêli was published in ... more1948) They reported that the Dogon believe that the brightest star in the sky, Sirius(sigi tolo or"star of the Sigui" has two companion stars, pō tolo(the Digitaria star) and ęmmę ya tolo, the female Sorghum star) respectively the first and second companions of Sirius A. Sirius, in the Dogon system, formed one of the foci for the orbit of a tiny star, the companionate Digitaria star. When Digitaria is closest to Sirius, that star brightens: when it is farthest from Sirius, it gives off a twinkling effect that suggests to the observer several stars. The orbit cycle takes 50 years. They also claimed that the Dogon appeared to know of the rings of Saturn, and the moons of Jupiter. The Dogon's system reveals precise knowledge of cosmological facts only known by the development of modern astronomy. The problem of knowing how. With no instruments at their disposal, men could know the movements and certain characteristics of virtually invisible stars has not been settled. In 1976 Robert K. G. Temple wrote a book called"The Sirius Mystery" arguing that the Dogon's information, if traced back to ancient Egyptian sources and myth, indicated an extraterrestrial

30" tall African Dogon Granary Door with many figures, tribal, no reserve
This NO RESERVE auction is for a lovely Dogon granary door from Mali. This beautiful door is finely adorned. And was collected from the Mali region of the Dogon's native territory. Small doors such as these are used to cover the granary(grain storage) access points and were intended to keep out animals, as well as thieves. The figures present on them are believed to have spiritual power, and are intended to protect the contents of the room, as is the small latch. This door features a great number of Nommo figures, protective figures representative of the earliest ancestors in Dogon mythology. They are said to have been bisexual water gods, created by the ultimate god Amma, and sent to Earth in an ark, where they then founded the Dogon family lineages and introduced various activities, such as smithing, farming, etc. The latches are often ... moremissing on these doors, but this one is still functional and intact(although it looks to be a replacement? The door may be bigger than it looks in the photos- one of the pairs of hands belongs to a someone who is 6'8" The Dogon are a people numbering near the 400.000 mark in the Mali and Burkina Faso region. Well known for their intricately carved doors, they settled the region of their inhabitance after fleeing persecution of their indigenous religious beliefs from the invading Muslims population to the north. Because of their resulting isolation, they have preserved many of their traditional art production methods, and are masters of producing artistic functional objects. Their art is highly versatile, and exhibits themes from their lifestyle, surroundings, and their cultural mythology. They produce a wide variety of masks and figures in addition to their famous doors, and their art has become quite popular amongst collectors. Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century last quarter, Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A 20th century mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, ... morearound 1500, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended

Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. West of the Dogon heartland the Dogon interact with the other major art producing people of Mali, the Bamana(Bambara) These figures show the influence of the Mande speaking Bamana(the Dogon are Gur language speakers – different language, different cultures! in sculptural attributes well defined. These include a squared body, keel shaped head and ‘U’- shaped ears. A Bamana blacksmith could easily have carved the figure. SUPERB DOGON 'BLACKSMITH' FIGURE #1856~ For African Art Gallery
by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites SUPERB DOGON'BLACKSMITH' FIGURE#1856 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Libations. Size: 19" 48.26 cm) tell. Item: 1856 Condition: Good considering age. Note the age cracks in the images. Note: Ex. Adkins Collection. According to Dogon lore. The seventh nommo to descend from the heavens was the blacksmith, bringing with him the ancestors of the human beings, animals, grain and technology. The blacksmith robbed the heavenly workshops of a piece of sun in the form of live coals and incandescent iron and then dashed down the rainbow with his prize, his descent proceeding along a spiral path. Irritated by his theft, those nommos who had remained in the sky attacked the thief. Twice they hurled a firebrand at him, and twice the blacksmith warded it off with the skin of his elbows, ... morethus creating a shield that acquired the solar essence, having received a bit of the sun, so that fire could no longer prevail against it. So brutal was the impact of the blacksmith's landing on earth that the mace he carried in his arms and the anvil slung over his back smashed his sinuous limbs. Thus were created the joints- knees and elbows- which allow men to work and dance. Check out my! Check out my! Customer Service: 561-745-1905 Powered by The free listing tool. African? Dogon? Wood Fertility Statue
I believe this may be a African dogon or similar statue. Definitely not anything modern. It stands about 4 ft tall. It has some cracking in the wood due to age. One of the arms is missing. Has a metal piece that looks like was used to brace the arm price which is missing. By the looks of it. I believe it has been missing for a long time. One of the arms(or both) may have been re-attached with glue or some type of adhesive. I am unsure. Looks like parts of the beard were chipped off somehow. Still a very nice piece that needs some TLC. Sold as is.

Museum quality authentic artifact(circa late 1800s) representing a King's ring with two horsemen. The item is about 2 1/2" high. Size 11 1/2-11 3/8 in excellent antique condition. Dogon art is extremely versatile. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. Their art deals with the myths whose complex ensemble regulates the life of the individual. The sculptures are preserved in innumerable sites of worship, personal or family altars, altars for rain, altars to protect hunters, in market. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified ... moreway, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense of a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the hermaphroditic silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The four Nommo couples, the mythical ancestors born of the god Amma, ornament stools, pillars or men’s meeting houses, door locks, and granary doors. The primordial couple is represented sitting on a stool, the base of which depicts the earth while the upper surface represents the sky; the two are interconnected by the Nommo. Horsemen are remainders of the fact that, according to myth, the horse was the first animal present on earth. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understandin

Encrusted materials, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 12.75 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, wear and chips in places, Additional Information: A kneeling female figure with one raised arm. The surface has encrusted patina and shows signs of extensive use. Beyond the obvious. The exact use of the piece cannot be known for sure. The Dogon use kneeling figures of nebulous sexuality for a variety of purposes, from effigies of their mythological founders, the"nommo, to ancestor figures, ... moreand shrine figures to promote success in childbirth or the harvest. The Dogon, numbering about 250,000, are one of most fascinating cultures in the world. They fled from the Mossi into southern Mali during the 15th century, settling on a breathtaking but remote plateau, known as the Bandiagara Cliffs. This isolation allowed their art to remain stylistically very pure, and as a result they have become a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists. They are a warm and hospitable people as well, much to the relief of all the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for the public, there are a limited number of art forms which they reveal, choosing to keep most of their rituals close to their hearts, and away from the cameras. Dogon beliefs and mythology are so complex that it takes a"griot" up to a week to recite them. Recommended Reading: See Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. 70572* All content. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. Jim'

Very Old Tribally Used Dogon Iron Fer Noir Ceremonial Funeral Gong Mali Africa
Very Old Dogon Iron Fer Noir Ceremonial Funeral Gong-AFRICA A large and very old Dogon hand-forged iron resonant gong instrument– belonging to the group of instruments known as idiophones; these produce a vibrating sound when struck. This old gong or bell was used by the Dogon as a ceremonial and ritual instrument and would struck by a metal rod producing a distinct sound. Used during funeral ceremonies. The player of this iron would lead the masked dancers that also partake in this solemn event. Iron smiths form an exclusive caste and are set apart for their special skills. Forged iron figures exhibit the technical skill and artistry of the Dogon iron smiths. Iron would be obtained from iron ore through smelting. Then through heating the object would be hammered out in order to obtain the desired shape. The iron smith would create the tools ... moreand weapons used as well as important ritual ceremonial objects. Superb workmanship with notable patina of age and usage. Additional Information: A tradition of brass/bronze cast figures is found among a ... morenumber of different peoples of the Western Sudan including the Dogon. Bozo and the various groups of Burkina Faso. This well modeled miniature figure comes from Mali and was made by the Dogon. This is an elegant figure depicting a sitting female with a long and curved back, long foiled legs, with a turned head in a relaxing movement. Bronze. Brass and iron figures are identified with Dogon myths of creation, as the blacksmith was one of the first primordial beings known as Nommo created by Ama who is one of the major Dogon deities. The identity between the Nommo and the blacksmith creates a bond and an identity that gives the blacksmith special powers which include the ability to call down rain so important in Dogon life. Figures such as this would be placed in the Binu sanctuary, a sacred shelter where the Dogon keep objects of magical importance. This sculpture reflects the artistry, power, and authority of the Dogon blacksmith, as it was he who also carved the well-known wooden sculptures used by the Dogon. Pieces can and are
