You are bidding on a Beautiful LEGA PEOPLE Painted Carved Wood Statue of a Kneeling Female Figure. From Congo. This item looks old. The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work. Which includes bone and wooden statuettes and masks. In the 16th century the Lega began their long migration from modern day Uganda into their present location. They were a warlike people whose fierceness inspired those. With whom they came into contact, to adopt many Lega customs. In the 17th century they attacked the Rwandan outpost of Rutshurer on their way to Maniema, just west of Lake Tanganyika, dividing and conquering the people who lived in the region. Many cultural traits have been assimilated into the surrounding cultures, and the Lega still dominate the region today. The main gods are Kalaga. The promiser; Kenkunga, the reassembler; ... moreand Ombe, the hidden. Kaginga is recognized as the incarnation of evil and assists sorcerers. By joining Bwami one can develop an immunity to the evil doings of most witches. The highest rank of Bwami is Kindi and is directly associated with the skulls of the ancestors, which are placed in a hut at the center of the village. Objects which contain powerful supernatural medicines are not exposed to public eye but are instead placed with the Kindi. SUPERB LEGA INGINGA BWAMI FIGURE #2140 ~ For African Art Gallery
LEGA INGINGA FIGURE#2140 Tribe: Lega. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 13.25" 33.66 cm) Tall Item: 2140 Condition: Very Good. The arts of the Lega(Warega) are well-known by collectors. And highly regarded for their naive, abstract appeal. The bulk of Lega artistic output is reserved for use by and for members of the"Bwami" Society. Figures like this Inginga sculpture representing humans, complete with short arms and hands, are rare. These small figures, used in the higher levels of Bwami, are normally much more abstract. Bwami is a complex organization consisting of multiple levels, and is open to both men and women. It forms the essential component of political, social, and religious life. Within Bwami, artworks are used in conjunction with proverbs, anecdotes, and performances to form ... morecomplex, layered metaphors which teach moral values. Wood and other figures have a wide range of style and quality in the carving. The member of the Bwami society who needed a sculpture carved would give the artist the requirements for the statue and the artist would have a great deal of artistic freedom in determining the final appearance of the object. Many figures have a varied degree of form and style. And unless the original context of the object was known it is impossible to determine it’s specific use or function. Lega sculptures are usually carved in a highly distinctive style. With a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly bulging forehead, slit coffee-bean eyes and an open narrow mouth. Lega masks such as this are known as Muminia, and are a relatively standardized size with dark and reddished patina sometimes enhanced with traces of white pigment around specific areas. The surface of this present masks shows ... morethat the mask has been repainted many times. According to Daniel Biebuyck. analogous masks belong to a large ritual community(encompassing numerous villages and distinct kinship units) on whose behalf they are kept in trust by the most senior, and often the oldest, Kindi of that group. The primary significance of this type of mask is social(a symbol of social cohesion between disparate groups that have no common leadership) and probably historical(the few communities that possess these masks seem to be the originators of the Kind rites in particular sections of Legaland) Biebuyck, D. LA SCULPTURE DES LEGA, Paris/New York, 1994, fig.68, p. 176) The complex system of instruction. BACKGROUND ... moreThe Lega inhabit the virgin forest of eastern DRC. Between the great lakes and the Lualaba River, next to Luba people. The Lega do not possess a centralized political organization, and both men and women aspire to moral authority by gaining high rank in the Bwami association. They live in the autonomous villages collectively situated at the summit of a hill surrounded by a palisade. They practice a mixed economy involving agriculture, hunting and fishing. Division of labor is gender based and akin to the economic patterns of other tribes living in the forest environment. Men hunt and clear new land and women cultivate manioc and other crops. The function of the Bwami is to regulate the social, religious, and political life of the Lega. It is conveying ethical principles and establishing social norms. Circumcision was an indispensable process that allowed entrance into the Bwami. It was accompanied by the teaching of proverbs and instruction in the handling of objects endowed with moral and practical significance. The Bwami was divided into several levels. To pass to the next level, a series of initiations, gifts, and payments were needed; and this meant that one had attained

The Congo Collection: 5 African Masks - Zaire - Lulua - Hemba - Lega - Songye
This sale consists of 5 different masks. There are masks from the Songye(possibly 2) Lulua and Hemba ethnic groups plus one mystery mask. Here is the break-down on age and condition. The Red-eyed Lulua Mask measures 12.15 inches in length x 8 inches wide. It has a chip missing from its left ear and several age cracks grace the surface of the piece. There are remnants of 40+ year old insect damage. Mask is solid. Heavy, dust and critter free. It is approximately 30 to 50 years old and is may have been used ceremonially. It is the correct size for ceremonial use, and shows signs of extensive wear and handling. The Hemba Mask with Rafia Beard measures approximately 9 inches in length x 8.75 inches wide. This is a very peaceful looking mask. Filled with charisma, which creates its own presence where-ever it hangs. It is approximately 25 to 30 ... moreyears old and was made in S.E. Zaire, about 150 KM west of Lake Tanganyka. The Rafia beard was obviously replaced subsequent to the creation of the mask. The Old Songye Passport Mask with Striated Face measures 10.5 inches in length x 4.4 inches wide. This is a sweet little mask with an awesome presence. It shows signs of extensive wear and handling. This precious piece is at least 35 to 40 years old and has a life of its own. The Passport Primate Fetish Mask I also believe to be Songye- but please correct me if you know differently. It measures 9.85 inches in length x 4.25 inches wide. During transport. A vertical strip broke away from the right side of the mask and had to be re-glued. Hanging on the wall, this is not a noticeable defect but it is evident while being handled. This small fetish mask is made from a rather light wood and is approximately 25 to 30 years old. The Unknown Flat Ovoid Mask from Zaire measures approximately 12 inches in length x 7 inches wide. It is made from a heavy wood and appears to have been made within the past 25 years. It is an interesting piece which may have Lega influence and/or stylistic design from neighboring tribes Normal 0 false fals

Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped, concave face, slightly protruding forehead, narrow nose, slit eyes and a slightly open mouth, often with a rather surprised and charming expression. The surfaces of the masks are rubbed with kaolin/pembe each time they are used, and thus acquire their striking white appearance. Though fairly common, Lega masks continue to be incredibly popular with collectors. The social and political life of the Lega(also known as the Warega) is regulated by the Bwami society. To which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men, four levels for women. Masks were used for initiation to one of the first two levels of the Bwami society. The white sections were repainted with Pembe each time they were danced. The mask was worn by the initiate and also displayed on a fence. Small masks like this were used as badg

The Bwami society is the context for the production of most Lega art work, which includes wooden statuettes and masks. Lega masks fall into the category of Bwami initiation objects. The Lega further divide them into five types according to material, size, and form: lukwakongo, kayam-ba, idimu, muminia, and lukungu(Biebuyck 1973,164) They serve as an important mark of rank, identifying the owners as members of specific Bwami levels. This serene Lega mask was formerly of a private Naples family collection. The auction specialist noted the consignor's father was an avid collector of African art and purchased the mask in 2006 from the Kudi Gallery in Provincetown. The mask has some minor age cracks and chips. All stable and typical of traditional use. Good condition. Appropriate for age, origin and medium. Among the Lega masks serve the Bwami Society. An initiation, and instructional society that governs and advises on moral and ethical conduct. There are a number of holes surrounding the edges of the mask that would have had grasses or a costume attached to it. If the Kayamba attribution is correct this is indeed an uncommon mask. This is a rarely encountered variant of the famous"Bwami" Society masks of the Lega. The antelope is a source of food. And an important totem animal for cultures throughout the Congo Basin. The Lega live near the northern end of Lake Tanganyika on the banks of the Lualaba River in the DRC. They live in small villages. And have no centralized authority. Lega society is regulated by a communal association known as"Bwami. This society is composed of male and female members, who strive to advance up through the various ranks, a long process involving challenges as well as proof of knowledge. Lega Standing Figure With One Raised Arm DR Congo African
Title, Lega Wooden Figure, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Lega, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 10 inches x 4 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks and chips in head and torso Additional Information: Lega Standing Figure with one raised arm known as Iginga Katanda among the Lega of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The heart-shaped face with long T-shaped nose tubular eyes and incised mouth is painted in white pigment. This is a stylized and well-carved figure that well represents the art of the Lega people. This Lega carved figure represents a being called Katanda or otherwise known as “sleeping mat”. In most of the cases figures of this type have a janus head and the two arms raised and holes go through the body. This one ... morehas one raised arm and a few holes in the chest. The term Katanda carries with it the identity of someone who is lazy and sexually promiscuous as can be seen by the holes in the body or the ‘mat’ torso. The figure represents the social disorder that a person with these qualities can inflect upon a people and the village and therefore is a reminder of good behavior and proper morals. This person is compared to the red ants. Called Katanda ke ibazi, that destroyed everything on their ways. Among the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo carved wooden figures are used during ceremonies of the Bwami Society, an initiation, and instructional society that governs and advises on moral and ethical conduct. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Lega sculptures are usually carved in a highly distinctive style, with a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly bulging forehead, slit ‘coffee-bean’ eyes and an open narrow mouth.

The Congo Collection: Rare & Fantastic Museum-quality Lega Bwami Mask - Zaire
This is an auction for a very special. Double-faced Lega mask. It measures 10.5 inches in height by 9 inches in width and has a fine aged patina. This mask came from a remote area of the DRC(Zaire) located approximately 150 kilometers west of Lake Kivu. Lega masks with heart-shaped facial regions are referred to as Lukwakongo. When this museum-grade Lukwakongo was originally collected in 1973. It already had decent age. It came from an important group of seven Lega masks(see pic) which I personally acquired in the D.R.C. last year. This mask was a twin to one of the masks in the collection. The original 6 will stay together(on my wall) as a group, whilst number 7 shall be orphaned out to a lucky new owner. Despite the fact that the mask displays signs of being extremely old. It is in decent shape. There are two very fine, age-related cracks ... morewhich run from the edge of the mask to the“lower lips” of the two mouths. The cracks are not visible to the casual observer especially when the mask is hanging on the wall. Both of the heart shaped faces are very heavily coated with layers of calcined kaolin clay pigment and it is apparent that the eye and mouth configuration of this particular mask reflect some Mitoko/Mituku elements. This particular museum-grade mask is 55 to 65 years old. And shows indications of substantial weatherization, wear and handling. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain these authentic items. Especially those with substantial age. Presently, many of the African“antiquities” posted on E-Bay are much newer than their description would indicate. In contrast. Please note that all of my items are guaranteed to be exactly as described. There have been five tribal groups, all referring to themselves as Wanyamwezi to outsiders: Kimbu, Konongo, Nyamwezi, Sukuma, and Sumbwa, who were never united. All groups normally merged have broadly similar cultures, although it is an oversimplification to view them as a single group. The Nyamwezi have close cultural ties with the Sukuma people.
