Old and large cracks and chips, old insect damage arrested, Additional Information: In the southwest region of Burkina Faso. Numerous smaller groups of farming peoples have often been identified collectively as the Gurunsi. Included within this larger collective are the Nuna, Nunuma and Lela among others sharing certain common elements of culture and language. They often share similarities with the masks found among the Bwa and Bobo, their better known neighbors. This is especially seen in their masks that are often difficult to tell apart as they are close in style and symbolism. Animal shaped masks have been identified as the primary sculpted art form of these people. This offered mask, for instance, represents a stylized bird mask. The style may appear to be an earlier example of this mask type. It shows signs of long use and good age. This mask is worn on the top of the head with the tail stretching upwards above the dancer's head. The holes in the cap portion would have woven bits of cord to provide a veil to hide the dancer’s face. Among these peoples of Burkina Faso(Upper Volta) The religion is based upon magical objects and figures that are kept in village and family shrines. Damage/Repair, cracks to back rim of mask. Chips on horn tips, scrapes, scratches, Additional Information: This wooden Mask in Form of Buffalo(Kiyunde) is from the Tabwa people of Southeast Democratic Republic of Congo and Northeast Zambia. This is a large and impressive mask carved from a single piece of wood. Numbering more than 200. 000 the Tabwa were noted as early as the 19th century and today live along Lake Tanganyika. This mask portrays a male wild buffalo called ‘kiyunde’ and appears wearing a costume composed of animal skins and grasses. It dances with a companion mask depicting a female. The Tabwa identify wild buffalo with their strength and behavior with chiefs and their culture heroes. The name buffalo is also given to the circumcised boys. Tacks worked onto the face of the mask in elaborate and attractive scarification patterns and designs represent the Tabwa concept of ‘kulemba’ that reflect aesthetics, social membership and the abstract idea of order upon the chaos of nature. This is a typical and well-carved example of Tabwa Buffalo mask that would stand well in a collection for what it represents. Did I get this while I lived in the Congo region of Africa? Heck no. its scary there. I did however buy it from the guy living in Burundi(god bless his ... moresole) and he shipped it to me in came in a hand-made wooden crate made for the sole purpose of arriving to me safely. This mask is from my personal collection(purchased about 8 years ago) It is LARGE. A 11 inch diameter across the base. 7 inches of upward carving inside the mask. And about another 11 inches tall. Go get a tape measure, draw those dimensions out. Picture it. made of wood now. sitting in front of you. Several"bolt holes" around the rim of the base. I swore these were used to adhere the mask to a leather shoulder strap and wear this in some"battle" But given the original description/ad i think i may have day-dreamed and come up with an alternative folklore. Please assume the original description to be accurate(see below) Three notable cracks. One medium side one over the left eye/cheek. A lessor one over the right eye region. A third and perhaps the biggest diagonally down the back of the head. All noticeable in pictures. None start/end withing anything closer than 3 inches of one another. Structurally a sound. Easily handled, vintage, rare mask. Here is what the original dealer said when I bought the mask at the time: Tribal art helmet mask. From the Tabwa tribe living in southeastern DR Congo. MATERIAL: Wood and pigments. It measures 10,1" 26 cm) in height. It shows wear and tear and chips. This item is located in Burundi and it will be shipped to you directly from there via registered airmail. We travel often to Great African lakes or Central Africa countries and we choose personally all the pieces offered in our auctions. Thanks for looking. No Reserve! Please allow 25 to 35 days to delivery. We offer 14 days return policy and free shipping worldwide. Its something I love learning about. Please feel free to ask questions. Or share knowledge. They number 2,2 to 3,5 million and are the only tribe of Inland West Africa to have a centralized governing body, in addition to clans and professional corporations led by elders known as zaksoba. They are an ethnically diverse people divided into two social groups. Political power resides in nakomze. Whose ancestors invaded the region in 15th century and subjected the various autochthonous groups living there. From these arose the tengabisi. A heterogeneous population whose kinship groups have provided ... morethe religious leaders of the Mossi to this day. On the north. One encounters a region of Sahelian desert steppes, then further south a zone of tree-field savannas, which gives way to forestland in the deep south. The greater part of the population lives off agriculture and cattle breeding. They grow millet. Sorghum, maize, sesame, peanuts, and indigo. Cotton. Introduced by the French during the occupation, is also cultivated over large stretches of land. Since the beginning of the century, the family has not been regarded as part of a community, since custom required that, immediately after circumcision, the eldest son leave to live independently from his father. Similarly. The young wife had no status whatsoever until the birth of her first child, which gave her the right to visit her parents. She did not raise her children, who were entrusted to older wives. On the other hand, at the death of a farther, the son would receive the wives and fields of his father.

BWA BUFFALO MASK - BURKINA FASO
Bwa masks represent or embody bush spirits. Who are evoked to benefit mankind and the natural forces on which life depends. They are face mask worn attached to fiber costumes covering the head. The masquerader bites firmly to a fiber rope passing through holes in the mask, so securing the mask to his face. Bwa masks tend to be two dimensional and don't extend to the back of the head. The fiber costumes that are worn in these masked performances are traditionally either black or red, red being the more common. Wood masks are more of a southern Bwa tradition, with the northern Bwa using leaf masks associated with the Do society more. Wooden masks are very family orientated, danced in various ceremonies, from harvest celebrations to funerals. Nuna animal masks follow a general stylistic pattern. They have large round protruding eyes. Surrounded ... moreby concentric circles, and a short triangular shaped snout. Decorative geometric patterns cover the whole surface. The masked dancers perform at market days, funerals, and initiations. Accompanied by drummers beating the special rhythm of each mask and greeted by the audience with songs, each dancer gives a solo performance, while the rest look on. The buffalo masker begins by standing motionless in the center of the dance circle while"staring" into the distance, as if perceiving a possible threat in the distance. Suddenly, the dancer moves forward, stamping his feet and violently tossing his head up and down, in defiance of any perceived danger. Performing before a large audience in this fashion is the way Nuna families and clans honor the powerful animal spirits living in the world around them and gain their protection and blessings. This fine example measures: 13.5” long and 6“ wide…it will be shipped on this custom wooden stand.

Which are made from leaves and vines and sculpted from wood. In Bwa society, the identity and continued well-being of a family are often tied to a nature spirit. The origin of this association may be a dream or even an encounter with a spirit who materializes in animal form. Upon consulting a priest, a family may commission a sculpture to embody that nature spirit. The masks appear at important funerals to honor the dead and escort their soul to the world beyond. They ... morealso dance at agricultural festivities to ensure the proper progression of the seasons, and at initiation rituals to help introduce young men and women to the secrets and responsibilities of adulthood. The masks are the object of family pride and are also an unofficial means of representing its prosperity and influence. Rival families will compete to assemble the most innovative and spectacular performances. Consequently, families will commission the carving of a multitude of masks—as many as nine different masks may represent an individual extended family. The elaborate decorations, the impressive size and design of the mask, as well as dynamic choreography all add to the grandeur and prestige of the event. Bwa artists draw upon the stylized features of humans, animals, and even insects and incorporate within their artistic output. Appropriate for age origin and medium, the subject Oiseau Nuna mask is in fine condition for being of considerable age. Similar to the Bobo in both their agrarian society. And in their style of mask production, the Bwa are a moderately sized group of people stretching through parts of Burkina Faso and Mali. They exist in something of a caste system, dilineated into three primary male professions; the farmers, the blacksmiths, and the artists. These masks are the products of the latter caste. The majority of Bwa masks are what are considere'plank ... moremasks' masks that are often rather large and flat, often extending laterally, or vertically, or taking a circular form. They are, for the most part, rendered in abstract. Each mask produced by the Bwa people is representative of a spirit of the wilderness encountered by a family elder. An effigy of this spirit is then produced in the form of a mask for the purpose of protection for that elder's family. This beautiful circular spirit mask features a common Bwa theme of alternating geometric patterning. Pigmented with traditional colors of red, black, and white. The spirits features are carved in a traditional form, abstract, but vaguely anthropomorphic. This simplistic round style is reasonably common, and well documented in the pantheon of Bwa masks. It is relatively small for a Bwa mask, but not necessarily small relative to other masks. On the rear facade is a tie-on area where the wearer's face would be secured to the mask via cordage. It displays normal age related markings, including minor dents, scratches, age cracking, etc, which should be considered normal. The spirit that inhabits the shrine also is found in masks that represent a spirit of the bush known as ‘Su’ ... morethat appears in different animal forms. These masks appear on a number of occasions including the initiation of young boys when they are informed about the different masks, their meanings, and how the various masks symbolize early myths and local history during annual celebrations when the masks are danced. Masks may also appear at the funerals of honored members of the men’s society or young men may simply dance masks on market days as entertainment and as a means to make money and attract young women. When not performing the mask is kept in the possession of the local smith’s clan. The surface carving in shallow relief was highlighted by the use of white and black paint applied in geometrical forms. Recommended Reading: Roy. C. The Art of the Upper Volta Rivers, 1987. Nuna animal masks follow a general stylistic pattern. ... moreThey have large round protruding eyes. Surrounded by concentric circles, and a short triangular shaped snout. The last image is the example in the Brooklyn Museum. This fine example measures: 13.5” long and 6“wide…it will be shipped on this custom wooden stand.

Ceremonial Plank Mask - (Nwantantay) BWA, Western Burkina Faso
TRIBE: BWA MASK: NWANTANTAY COUNTRY: BURKINA FASO AGE: EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This mask shows good signs of use and wear. With good color and patina. Excellent graphic appeal. Nwantantay plank mask. The southern Bwa are called nyanegay. Or“scarred Bwa” because their faces and torsos are heavily scarred by patterns applied during initiation. The southern Bwa abandoned the use of leaf masks to honor Dwo, the god of the wilderness, and adopted the use of wooden masks from their Gurunsi neighbors. The masks represent nature spirits or animals that family elders encountered in the wilderness and which watch over their families. They may represent antelopes. Warthogs, wild buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles, serpents, fish, birds, and insects, along with some human beings, and bush spirits who take on supernatural forms. Both ... morethe scars on people’s faces and the patterns on the masks represent the moral code or religious laws that the followers of these spirits must obey if they are to receive the blessings of the spirit. A mask has a circular face with geometric designs painted in vivid colors. And is surmounted by a large plank with a crescent-shaped motif at the end. The eyes set off by concentric circles are intended to recall an owl, and the hooked shape extending from its forehead alludes to the hornbill. The motifs are symbols linked to Dwo and to the history of the clan. The mask is worn in front of the face. They are differentiated only by the shape of the“horns” while the muzzle and protruding eyes remain mostly the same. The dancer looks through the open hole of the mouth. These masks are thought to be inhabited by supernatural forces, who act to benefit the clan, that possess them. Tall plank masks such as this one. Called Nwantantay, represent flying spirits from the bush. These spirits have no natural shape and hence. Are portrayed in abstract geometric form. The spirits embodied in the masks bless the families that own the mask and dance it in public. The patterns on the mask ha

History recounts that the Bwa have been repeatedly attacked over the last few centuries by a succession of invaders, including the Bamana, and then later the Islamic Fulani and even the French. Spectacular. One of a Kind, Bwa Butterf ly/ Hawk Mask This much admired work of fine. Authentic tribal art measures approximately 8 FEET wide and 1 foot high, solid wood. The photo with the SUV demonstrates the dramatic scale of this unique piece. Despite its size. This mask is easy to hang securely on any wall. We have displayed it on both brick and plaster walls, using simple picture hooks and the picture wire on the back of the mask(see last photo) We have moved this mask by car, taxi, and hand with no problems. In 1998, I collected this very authentic piece in a village near Oagadougou, Burkina Faso and brought it Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire by bus and then NYC by air. Its age is uncertain. The overall condition of the mask is excellent. There are just a few minor surface cracks and flaking to the pigment, and a deeper crack on the"beak" ... moreStructurally, the piece is rock solid. This butterfly/hawk mask is called yehoti in Boni. It has broad wings covered with eight striking target or bullseye patterns. Which represent the colored markings on butterflies' wings. The reverse of this huge piece, covered in a bold checkerboard pattern, is nearly beautiful as the front. The mask dancer's performance consists of rapidly rotating the mask in place horizontally. Butterflies are symbols of new life brought by spring rains, because they hatch and cluster around puddles in the savannah. A fine. Incredibly dynamic, work of tribal art. A real show stopper.
