Title, Bamileke Royal Hat Fingerlings. Cameroon, Type of Object, Textiles. Hat and headdress, Country of Origin, Cameroon, People, Bamileke, Materials, ... moreCotton, Approximate Age, mid 20th Century, Dimensions, 5 inches tall and 7 inches diameter. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, None. General wear, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: A beautifully designed cotton hat with fingerlings. Such caps come from the Bamileke people of Cameroon Grasslands. This cap is in excellent condition and can still be worn. In this Cameroon Grasslands region hats are made in wide variety of media such as vegetable fiber. Cotton, and feathers, and in different shapes. Hats are part of prestigious regalia in the Cameroon grasslands. They are worn by men during special ceremonies. It is unimaginable to see a notable in an outfit without his hat. Rather than a simple accessory hat could be an indication of the owner's social rank and status. These sculptural hats are sometimes represented on carved figures. This hat is in good condition. The Grasslands is dominated today by three large cultures: the Bamun. Bamileke, and the Bamenda Tikar. Each village is led by a primary chief, or"Fon. All people in the area are expe

Type of Object, Royal Ancestor(Memorial) Figure. Country of Origin, Cameroon(Grasslands) People, Bangwa(or Bamileke) Materials, Wood and pigments. Approximate ... moreAge, mid 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 31 inches. Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, Right arm has a slight wiggle. Crack in torso, old insect damage. Notch in hair style broken and glued. Additional Information: A dramtic standing figure from the Bangwa peoples. Probable dating from the second half of 20th, last quarter. It has a hairline crack visible at the shoulder, through layers of patina, and may have been repaired. Rarely do figures of this quality and condition come to the market, especially a classic ancestoral portrait from the Bangwa people of the Grasslands of Cameroon. This well carved figure with its lively stance. Dynamic expression and concise detailing of body represents either a royal personage or a title-holder of some rank in Bangwa Grasslands society. The symbolism of the headdress and skirt and bracelets indicate that the figure comes out of one of the numerous chiefdoms in the Grasslands region where sculptures represent royal ancestors. Special knitted caps with multi-colored tufts of cotton served as prestigious indicators of title-holders and royalty. The number of bracelets and patterned skirt reinforce the idea of either a royal figure or a retainer at court. The placement of hands on the cap and at the side of the face are known as gestures of deference and respect to a senior ranked person. Bangwa figures are known for their dynamic movement and vivid facial expressions in contrast to other African sculptures. As a result it would constantly renew itself by a simple turning of the figure to experience a different view. Artists working at royal courts served the ruler and royals at court carving figures. Masks, stools and large figured house posts and doorways. This strong animated carving will serve as a centerpiece of any collection and keep visually renewing itself through time. L'ART BAMOUM par TARDITS-CAMEROUN-BAMILEKE-BAMUM-TRIBAL-AFRICAN ART BAMUM TRIBAL
L'histoire singulière de l’art bamoum(Cameroun) Claude TARDITS 2004 NEUF- MINT! DESCRIPTION: Paris. 2004, 127 pages, 140 illus. bibl. cartes.

Bamileke Bamun Stool Large Cameroon African
Title, Bamileke/Bamun/Wum Stool Cameroon African, Type of Object, Stool, Country of Origin, Cameroon, People, Bamileke. Bamun or Wum, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second Half 20th century, Dimensions, 12 inches x 14 inches top; Stool Height: 15.5 inches Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks at top and in base. Scratches, old insect damage, chip damage on bottom, Additional Information: This wonderfully carved circular stool supported with strong structure in the center comes from the Cameroon Grasslands region. Cameroon is a large country with mountainous terrain. Broad savannas and grasslands where a number of centralized kingdoms or chiefdoms have developed each with distinctive individual art traditions while sharing common religious beliefs, political structures and social institutions. Grasslands art serves to indicate ... moresocial status and rank with the most prestigious imagery and material reserved for the king(Fon) and other nobility diminishing in importance as one moves downwards in rank at court. Certain artists and artisans working close by the palace serve the king working in materials and symbols reserved exclusively for him. Ranging from royal regalia of high prestige to objects of everyday usage most were embellished with either simple designs or complex imagery including human and animal images symbolically identified with kingship. Seated upon his stool the king embodies political power and ritual authority with strength and leadership visually reinforced by the image of the buffalo. This stool could well deserve a place in any collection. Today. Such as stool can also be used as a nice low table. Recommended Reading: R. The masks bearing human and animal figures: The Fon supported by non-secreted societies was believed to have supernatural powers that allowed him to change from man into animal, namely elephant, lizard or buffalo. This allowed him to create a link between the human and spirit realm, to seek guidance from his ancestors. This crossing of the boundaries is only done during special rituals. The elephant and buffalo masks also represent strength and power. Various occupations since the 17th century led to the Bamileke people moving to the South where they intermarried with the Bamum people, this resulted in a cross fertilization of ideas and artistic skills. The Bamilike recognize a supreme god(Si) but they more commonly pay homage to their ancestors. They believe that ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls. ►►SPECIAL►ROYAL BAMILEKE BRONZE MASK w/ELABORATE COIFFURE/HEADDRESS ~African Art
For further details, please visit the item description at our Website(click on the image above) Bamileke Royal Bronze Mask(Cameroon) Description: On offer from our private collection is this marvelous old bronze mask from the Bamileke peoples of Cameroon. The various ethnic groups throughout the Cameroon region. Including the Bamileke, Bamum, Tikar, are renowned for their skilled& highly imaginative metalwork, are known to produce some of the most sought after of all African sculptures. Probably representing royalty. The tribal member or ancestor depicted here bears an expression of elation. Captured in high relief, his well-defined facial features include raised eyebrows, eyes that telescope out of their sockets, a strong, prominent nose, protruding lips. A decorative striated collar, punctuated by bead-like formations along the bottom ... morerim, underscores the chin, while an incised headband accentuates the brow. Crowning the mask's head is an elaborate coiffure/headdress with multiple winged protuberances& raised'bead' adornments set within concentric rings. The center loop at the top of the mask suggests this piece may possibly have been used as a hip mask, worn on the ornate belt of a king or other tribal official. Despite some casting imperfections. This handsome mask is in very good overall condition. With its fairly thin-walled construction, it's not surprising that the lost-wax casting process resulted in some pin-holes in the collar& headdress, as well as a couple of very small holes present in the smooth-surfaced area above the headband. There is native repair to the coiffure(on the upper right side of the mask's coif) judging by the old patina at the site, inside& out, the repair may have been done at the time of casting. With the rich. Chocolaty-brown tone of the bronze, the mask has achie

Antique African Art - Bamun - Bamileke Tribe Cameroon Heavy Cast Bronze Ladle
Offered at auction is an antique bronze ladle. Origin Bamun, probably Bamileke tribe, from Cameroon. Heavy casting, weight 7-8 pounds, 19.5" in length, with a wide, deep ladle bowl. The piece is highly detailed, estimated age from the later 19th century to 1930's era. The large end of the ladle depicts an African face, highly stylized, with cheek scarifications, and detailed hairstyle. The handle of the ladle contains an African native, tall and thin, with a slightly distended belly, clad in a native breechcloth. The figure is seated on or leaning against what might be a tree stump, and is holding an object in the right hand, probably a pestle for crushing herbs and berries. The face and bald head show further evidence of scarification. The ladle has a heavy patina, which is built up especially on the handle where it would be held ... moreby fingers and thumb. The inside of the ladle bowl is quite darkened and heavily encrusted with material from long-term usage. The collector I acquired it from in the mid-1990's was a former museum director and was an expert on African art. He said that the ladle was likely from one of two possible sources, either the house of a wealthy king or chief, or from an important shaman or witch doctor. He believed it was the latter, because of the human figure on the handle holding the pestle, and the scarifcations on the large face and the handle figure. His thinking was that the ladle was used in the preparation and cooking of medications and potions, and that figure ont he handle and the face on the bowl of the ladle were meant to draw out the medicinal essence from the materials being mixed and cooked together. All in all. This is a wonderful example of tribal art, a great native bronze casting in great condition. I've always found it fascinating that in African tribal work there is no division between artworks and utilitarian objects. It is all art. Looking at the fantastic face on the bowl of the ladle, it is easy to see how artists like Picasso, Braque, and Leger were a

LARGE OLD BAMILEKE PEOPLE ANCESTRAL HELMET WITH AMAZING DETAILS FROM CAMEROON
You are bidding on a Rare and Old BAMILEKE PEOPLE Large Ancestral Helmet with amazing design details. From Cameroon. Most Bamileke statues represent the chief(Fon) Masks are also carved. Beautiful beadwork associated with the Fon is common throughout this area. The art styles of the peoples in the Grasslands are very hard to differentiate due to the complex and recent migration patterns that are typical of the region. The Bamilike recognize a supreme god(Si) But they more commonly pay homage to their ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. The skulls are in the possession of the eldest living male in each lineage, and all members of an extended family recognize the skulls of their group. When a family decides to relocate, a dwelling, which must be first purified by a diviner, is built to house the ... moreskulls in the new location. Although not all of the ancestral skulls are in the possession of a family, the spirits are not forgotten. These spirits have nowhere to reside and may cause trouble for the family. To compensate when a man's skull is not preserved, a family member must undergo a ceremony involving pouring libations into the ground. Dirt gathered from the spot then comes to represent the skull of the deceased. Respect is also paid to female skulls, although details about such practices are lacking. African Tribal Buffalo Mask - 22 x10 inch Bamileke Bamun Cameroon Grasslands
This is fine example of an Bamileke Buffalo or bush bull mask. This would have been worn by the"fon" or tribal leader during agricultural rites. It is made of wood. Has exaggeratedly carved teeth, flaring nostrils and large horns. It is decorated with white pigment. The size is roughly 21 inches from the top of the horns to the mouth and roughly 10 inches across. Is it three dimensional as can be seen in the photos. I acquired this from a well known psychologist who did chimpanzee research for 45 years. He told me that he had personally brought it back from Africa in the 1970s. if you email me I will tell you which one. I have bought and sold masks from many cultures over the years and- although I am not claiming to be an expert- this one is well constructed and has a true patina of age. It is museum quality and not one of the"trade" ... moremasks that are sold at the airports. There is one spot of house paint on the inside. Probably due to it having been hung on the wall for so long. I did not attempt to remove it so as not to risk damaging the mask.

The major crops grown are yams, peanuts, and maize. The men in the ... moretribe help with clearing the land and hunting. The Bamileke tribe worships a supreme god and their ancestors.
