YAKA M'BWOOLO/ POWER JANUS FIGURE#2088 Tribe: Yaka. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Rope, Cloth, Fetish material. Size: 14.5" 36.8 cm) tall. Condition: ... moreExcellent. Item# 2088 Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) This fetish figure(as called in older literature) or powere figure. Is attributed to the Yaka people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is figure that would generally be used by diviners in the healing and protection rituals they held. They were however used by individuals, families and entire villages too in the fight against evil, to destroy or weaken and evil spirits that were present, to help prevent and even cure sickness, to solidify contracts or agrrements between tribes people, and to repel bad deeds. The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with power figures. As they can be an ally or an enemy. The negatives are, they can be used to invoke illness, to harm or to take revenge by those who have been wronged. They are normally used in this fashion against'witches' or'sorcerers' On a positive note, they are generally used as a form of protection from misfortune, to heal and to bring success. How these figures differ from ancestral figures is that they derive their power from ritual use and the addition of'power or fetish materials' The application and'charging' of the fetish material to the figure is carried out by a specialist, usually the diviner who will then initiate the figure for its intended use. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola, People, Holo, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, second ... morehalf 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 8.5 Inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old chip in foot to the back. cracks in places, Holo Male Figure Upraised Arms Rare DR Congo Africa Additional Information: This strangely carved figure with a hole carved in its chest to receive offerings or magical substances shares a number of possible stylistic sources with possible association to the Holo people. It must be also kept in mind that Holo sculpture takes much from its Yaka and Suku and Chokwe neighbors. This is seen in the details and style of carving as in this carved male figure with upraised arms. The stance and facial shaping argue a possible source among the Holo. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. Holo had other works and objects such as slit drums, framed figures(nzambi) masks and ironwork that were related to royal elites. At best the character of the piece will stand as a challenge to place among a single people and yet it has it’s own simple sculptural charm as well as magical potential in the cavity to hold substances. Figures like this were used in the cult Mahamba associated with healing. Fertility, and protection. The hole in its chest served to receive magical substances that empowered the figure. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 28341* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorit

The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with power figures. ... moreAs they can be an ally or an enemy. Yaka Standing Figure Mbwoolo African Miniature
Title, Yaka Standing Figure Mbwoolo African Miniature, Type of Object, Carving. Figure, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Yaka Materials, Wood. Vegetal fibers, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 8.75 inches, Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, large crack on one side from head throughout body and to the back Additional Information: AYaka Standing miniature figure! This figure belongs to the category of M'bwoolo and had served in healing rituals or for individual protection. After the healing process the patient would be given such a figurine by the healer to ensure a definite recovery and keep the protective spirit in the patient's family to prevent any other attack from the spirits responsible of the misfortune. The present day Yaka number approximately 300.000 and live along the Kwango River in the SW Democratic ... moreRepublic of the Congo. Their neighbors are the the Kongo, Teke, Zombo, Nkanu, Suku,Pindi, Mbala, Hugann, Holo,Chokwe, and so forth. They have a highly developed artistic sense-and they instill beauty and drama in even mundane objects. They are best known for the upturned noses found on initiation masks and diviner's fetishes, but their art can be abstract and vague as well. They sometimes create statues of considerable proportions. Though these normally are used by diviners and fall in the power figures or"fetish" category(M'bowoolo) the Yaka also carve large ancestor figures placed in the family shrines. TRIBAL AFRICAN SUKU YAKA MASK CONGO EX HANDLEY COLLECTION
Suku Initiation Mask- Democratic Republic of Congo Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Vegetal fibers, pigment, patina Height 34.2cm( 13.5in) without raffia collar Ex-Handley Collection. Los Altos Hills, CA Xanadu Gallery. San Francisco, CA Property from a Private Pennsylvania Collection Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes The Suku create complicated masks which are used by the initiation societies to mark the transition to adulthood. During this initiation period. Which may last a year or more, adolescent boys are separated from the village and made to undergo a series of ordeals, including circumcision, designed to measure their strength and courage. These tests often culminate in the boys' symbolic death as children and rebirth as men. Among Yaka and Suku peoples, ... morethe conclusion of mukanda-coming to manhood rites-is accompanied by performances of kholuka masks. The imagery that surmounts these masks translates into visual form the lyrics of songs that emphasize gender differences. Figural representations of humans and animals ridicule women and celebrate male virility. Contemporary works reinforce generational continuity and male solidarity by incorporating the ashes of masks danced on the occasion of preceding mukanda(Metropolitan Museum, 2011) Note this fine Suku helmet mask comes from the collection of Silicon Valley Pioneer Raymond G. Handley(1923- 2009) Handley developed the first solar powered building in Silicon Valley in the mid 1970's. After his brother. William Jules Handley, became the U.S. Ambassador to Mali, Africa in 1962, Raymond became interested in the country and wanted to make a difference in the lives of its people, drilling more than 50 water wells for Dogon villages through 300 feet of granite during the 1980's. A vibrant, adventurous and highly successful developer of Silicon Valley, Raymond became a keen collector of art and traveled extensively. His journeys took him from the highest mountains of Tibet t

YAKA FETISH 11" Fertility Figure Statue Carving Angola Congo African Tribal Art
YAKA FETISH 11" Fertility Figure Statue Carving Angola Congo African Tribal Art Standing almost 11" tall is this beautiful fetish. Fetishes protected individuals. Families, or whole communities. It would weaken or completely destroy evil spirits. Additionally it was said to cure or prevent sickness, judge disagreements, officiate contracts or oaths, and ward off bad deeds. Because people believed in these fetishes, they gained power and were effective. A person deemed holy or a diviner activated it. It comes from the region of either Angola(or Congo) and is typically made by the Yaka people. This will make a great display piece whether in a public gallery or in your home. This was purchased in the 90's for a private collection, but it dates much earlier. I have not had it appraised but I know that these type of fetishes(Yaka) ... moretypically sell in the $400-$1200 range. Shipping: Priority Mail USPS. Title, Yaka Ancestor Figure with Short Legs Custom Stand DR Congo African 26 inches H. Type of Object, Figure, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Yaka, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Mid 20th century, Dimensions, 26 inches H. Overall Condition, Fair to Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in head. Neck and body, holes and wood damaged in neck and body, chips and wear in places, Additional Information: A wonderful Yaka figure standing with pride and grace! This sculpture is characterized by short legs and large body and head. This disproportional figure shows the diversity of styles of Yaka figures. Exceptionably the illustrated example has rounded forms while many of the Yaka figures are known for their geometric and angular forms. The short legs supporting the large trunk creates a certain disequilibrium that adds to the sculpture uniqueness ... moreand charm. The figure illustrated here have served as a memorial or ancestor figures. The present day Yaka number approximately 300.000 and live along the Kwango River in the SW Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their neighbors are the Pende. They have a highly developed artistic sense-and they instill beauty and drama in even mundane objects. They sometimes create statues of considerable proportions. Though these normally are used by diviners and fall in the"fetish" category, they also carve large ancestor figures like the one offered here. The lack of fetish cavities and added substances on this figure indicates its usage in ancestor cult. This figure would be a good addition to any collection. Recommended Reading: Bourgeois. Together with the Suku are the two most important ethnic groups that have settled in southwestern Zaire- Democratic Republic of Congo) Both ethnic groups speak a language belonging to the Bantu group of languages. The art of divination being widespread prompting the creation of a variety of objects. Amongst these objects is the slit drum, a small wooden drum with a slit in the sounding box, most usually adorned with a human figure. A Yaka slit drum from the Democratic Republic of Congo- The slit drum is part of the category of musical instruments known as idiophones. Slit drums from central Africa. YAKA 'M'BWOOLO' YANUS FETISH PROTECTION FIGURE #2192 ~ For African Art Gallery
YAKA M'BWOOLO/ POWER JANUS FIGURE#2192 Tribe: Yaka. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Cloth, Fetish material. Size: 14" 35.6 cm) tall. Condition: Good. Foot broken, see images. Item# 2192 Provenance: James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with ... morepower figures. Yaka Circumcision Mask Mbaala or Kholuka Handle & Bright Colors African
Title, Yaka Circumcision Mask Mbaala or Kholuka Handle& Bright Colors African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Northern Yaka, Materials, Wood. Scrapes and scratches in small places, Additional Information:  A lovely Yaka mask recognized by its  enigmatic form. Its impressive headdress, the use of  bright colors, and the typical upturned  nose! This is a circumcision mask.  At the end of the circumcision and initiation rites of young boys, Nkhaanda, this Mbaala mask also known as kholuka, was worn by the elder among the young initiate to celebrate their new status. Mbaala mask is characterized by the superstructure ... moreon the top of the coiffure adorned with bright colors and surmounted by all human and animal figures as well as by scenes of a couple copulating. Mbaala masks depict sexual attributes and display sexual play and procreation. Sexuality and procreation are among the subjects taught to the initiate during their seclusion. Some Mbaala have been seen displaying a penis-like made of wood or other media emphasizing the virility of the new young initiates after their circumcision and meaning that these initiates are ready to get married and have children. They perform to entertain the crowd, but usually, when Mbaala performs everybody is embarrassed. That's one of the rare occasions where sexuality is publicly exposed. The upturned nose which is seen on this mask is associated to the sexual aspects depicted by this mask. The Yaka  are originated from Angola and were conquered by the Lunda in the late 17th or early 18th century.
