From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Her breasts are heavily marked with scarification marks, and her coiffure is tall and rounded, a common style in Kongo sculpture. Nails, Metal Blade Plates. Condition: Weathered; fair condition for its age. Approximate age: 100 Years Old Measurements cm: 97 Tall 42 Wide Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals. Families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments. A diviner or holy person would activate the statue, using magical substances. Fetishes gained power and were effective because people believed in them. The nkondi are the most powerful of the nkisi. They were used to identify and hunt down unknown wrongdoers such as thieves. And people who were believed to cause sickness or death by occult means. They were also used to punish people who swore false oaths and villages which broke treaties. To inspire the nkondi to action, it was both invoked and provoked. Invocations, in bloodthirsty language, encouraged it to punish the guilty party. It would also be provoked by having gunpowder exploded in front of it, and having nails hammered into it. They were also used to literally"hammer out agreements"with clear implications as to what would happen to people who broke the agreements. Much of the profits raised from this sale will go a little way to help some impoverished children and villagers in the Moyen Cavally Region of Cote D'Ivoire and Liberia. Superb African Yombe Kongo Maternity Fetish Figure
This is a Yombe carved maternity fetish from what is now the Republic of Kongo. It is outrageously graceful and so beautifully expressive of the ultimate offering of generosity shown through the lifting of a breast. The woman is kneeling and holding one breast up and forward. As if offering milk; in the other hand she is chewing on a medicinal plant. The teeny tiny teeth have been carved to look as though they have been filed into points. Tatoo markings are on all spiritual points on the body. The detail is very articulated and the form itself is very classical. I think it is a very special carving and have enjoyed it enormously and should you purchase it, I doubt you will be disappointed. It is approximately 70 years old. Size: 8.5 x 4 x 3" Hardwood

From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Unique to the Kongo's region are these'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. The most feared of these figures. Were these, the Nkondi. Standing in a symbolic pose, and generally carrying an actual small spear(or two) which is generally gone by ... morethe time the figure leaves the continent, they bear a ferocious expression, intended to advertise their ferocious purpose. The Nkondi were used to locate and punish(in many cases this means destroy) wrong-doers, deal breakers, or those who inflict evil upon others through magic. They were also used as physical bonds to agreements made between people. Often if the agreement were to be broken, the slated punishment was death, which was intended to be carried out through magic by the Nkondi. Nkondi often feature a bowl shaped relief in the abdomen that would be filled with various'magic' substances(specific plants, eggs, and other natural materials) by a skilled holy man in order to activate the statue. After activating it, the Nkondi had to be'called to action' This was accomplished in a number of ways; by taunting it, singing to it, drives nails or blades into it, and by other means. In many cases, a mirror, or other covering was used to seal up the relief. These pieces gained real power when used because the people believed in their effectiveness.
