The othe face with distorted features and painted in white, blue, and black. Such a mask representing two characters in one is very unusual and reflects the ability and inventiveness of Pende skilled artists. These two masks belong to the category of dancing mask known as Mbuya: The first face is known as Mbuya Mbangu. A mask with deformity. The eyes. Nose, and mouth are distorted and placed in the side. This identification comes as a result of analogies to mask carvings with similar development of facial features and the dramatic use of colors. Mbangu mask depicts several characters. Some are comic others are serious. This particular type represents a bewitched or an epileptic character struggling between life and death. Mbangu masks show the moment of seizure when the Pende believe that the gods possessed the individual. The second one is known as Mbuya Kiwoyo(Giwoyo) A mask with human face and long beard. The othe face with distorted features and painted in white, blue, and black. Such ... morea mask representing two characters in one is very unusual and reflects the ability and inventiveness of Pende skilled artists. These two masks belong to the category of dancing mask known as Mbuya: The first face is known as Mbuya Mbangu. A mask with deformity. The eyes. Nose, and mouth are distorted and placed in the side. This identification comes as a result of analogies to mask carvings with similar development of facial features and the dramatic use of colors. Mbangu mask depicts several characters. Some are comic others are serious. This particular type represents a bewitched or an epileptic character struggling between life and death. Mbangu masks show the moment of seizure when the Pende believe that the gods possessed the individual. The second one is known as Mbuya Kiwoyo(Giwoyo) A mask with human face and long beard. Spectacular Eastern Pende Giphogo Bird Mask – Congo / DRC
This is a quite unusual Eastern Pende mask. The Pende is a large tribe spread over the Kasai region in Southern DRC– with a stunning variety of masks and sculptures. In particular among two subgroups(eastern and Western) that have developed significantly different styles. The piece here is from the Eastern(Kasai) group– and known as the Giphogo, of which local variations also exist. It is made of a hard wood, with a bell shaped face covered in red pigments with a tubular mouth, and a beard-like appendicle on the jaw. As in many Giphogos, the upper part of the mask is made of a sword-like projection, showing black and white triangles, a motive also typical of the Pende. What makes this mask really spectacular though is that the mask, once reversed shows a striking bird figure, so that this mask, as sometimes the case, was probably worn both ... moreways in different representations. This is beautiful antique Muyombo mask from the Central Pende. The Pende is a large tribe spread over Southern DRC. Although typically classified into two main groups(Western and Easter) At least four subgroups are known, with great variations in styles: Western, Central, Kwilu and Eastern Pende. Each of them produced an extraordinary array of masks. Some of which were destined to initiation rites, while others were danced in villages upon a series of social events. As often in traditional tribal sculpture. Pende masks are highly symbolistic and can serve different purposes, depending on the occasion. The piece here is known as Muyombo. It shows a flat face with a large forehead, fixed eyes with large eyelids, a square nose and triangular mouth. The appendix below the chin. Original African Tribal Art Statue Fertility Goddess Congo Pende nice patination
Wooden statue of a Fertility Goddess which I inherited from a cousin who told me that in his opinion it was made in the early part of the 20th century. However it could be older but I am not an expert in this field. He also told me that it came from a missionary who spent most of his life in Africa. The statue looks original to me. There are traces of white polychromy. at the head. The cuff links and between the legs, whereas red has been used on the chest. There are a few splits of the wood especially at the head, a sign of age which you would not find on a modern copy. There is a hollow in the wood in both legs. A piece of the left foot is missing and there is some damage at the other side of the right leg. The wood looks exotic but I am not sure which wood was used. This very unusual mask was acquired about 10 years ago in the African Warehouse in New York City. It has an unusual and dramatic cubist expression. Intense incised scarification pattern on face further enhances the mystery. The mask showed signs of use and originality. This mask does show some original-use repair using wire to attach the broken piece in back of the mask together. There is some abrasion of the patina. Overall a truly one of a kind piece.

You are bidding on a Beautiful PENDE PEOPLE Painted Carved wood mask of a bearded male figure. With amazing design details, from Congo. The Pende carve numerous types of masks. Most of which are associated with education and initiation rituals. In the northwest part of the territory wooden figures are sculpted. Carved stools, staffs, chairs, and swords are used by chiefs and other important people to signify their power. The Pende. Along with their neighbors the Yaka and Suku, can trace their origins to modern day Angola, between the Atlantic Coast and the Kwanza(Cuanza) River. They were forced north to their current region during the Lunda expansion in 1620, which also resulted in numerous cultural influences. They are divided into two major groups, a western group who live just to the east of the Yaka and an eastern group who live on the ... morewestern bank of the Kasai River. Although each group is culturally distinct they consider themselves as one people. The Chokwe expansion around 1885 engulfed most of the eastern Pende and some of the western group as well. Colonialism halted the expansion of the Chokwe and allowed the Pende to reclaim their independence. The ancestors(mvumbi) are placated through various rituals and offerings. The family head is responsible for taking care of the shrines and appeasing the spirits. The Pende recognize that spirits may be either good or bad. Depending on the manner in which they died. Also, when ancestors are neglected they will cause bad things to happen to the family. The result may be sickness or hardship, both of which require a visit to the local diviner to determine the best way to appease the spirits. Through the diviner, the spirit will sometimes demand that a wooden sculpture be commissioned so that offerings can be made to it. The style of this decorative mask is identified as Eastern Pende of the Kasai River region. Colors enhance the shape of the mask while adding visual dramatic flair and the play of abstract and geometric patterns enliven the surface and reflect a great sense of design on the part of the carver. This is a visually exciting example of Pende mask. The Pende are known for their artistic forms ranging from house decorations. Figural sculptures, numerous carved ivory pendants, and a wide variety of masks. Masks from the eastern Pende are fairly numerous and often abstract with a generous use of red, black and white coloring. Masks similar to this example are known as Pumbu Ya Mafumu and are dedicated to society elites. They are large masks and are worn with a ruff of grass that is held by a number of holes along the sides and bottom of the mask. Interesting pair of 9" African fetish dolls. Not sure of their countries of origin. The one wrapped in layers of cloth was purchased in an African cultural antique store in Georgetown about 12 years ago. The other is dressed in a woven straw/raffia costume and likely represents a tribal healer or dancer.

Pende Mask Raffia Private Collection This exquisite and colorful mask stands 22" tall. Made of carved wood. Raffia, and colored with earth ochres. Purchased at the Davis Gallery in New Orleans, LA. in JUne of 1987. Description from documentation: This mask called'Mbuyu' was worn in a circumcision ritual by a young initiate of the Pende tribe. Among these people adolescent boys attend a bush school where they are isolated from other villagers for over a year in order to study the religious. Sexual, and political mores of their tribe. Graduation from this school is a ritual and physical circumcision which signified their passage into manhood. Item was collected"in situ" in the Eastern Pende area of Zaire. During his lifetime, he assembled an important private collection of primitive works. Unusual in form. The facial features of this exceptional mask reveal the carver's remarkable expertise& attention to detail- the tubular eyes, refined structure of the nose with its flared nostrils, ... moreopen mouth with bared teeth are all executed with the utmost of skill. Raised scarifications highlight the brow& cheeks. Applied pigments accentuate all of these outstanding features. Round and painted Gitenga masks are known to be part of a larger grouping that dances during mukanda initiations and circumcisions of young boys to represent the perseverance that the boys must demonstrate during this initiation. They dance with other masks made out of grass fibers that also have large protruding eyes. As the group dances it represents to the viewers ideas of the difficulties of life, chance and death. The Gitenga masks should have a fringe of grasses extending from the outer edge all around the mask. The face of the mask is composed of woven raffia or more likely today, cloth. This mask is a classic example of the Katundu Style characterized by its triangular and heavy-lidded half closed eyes under a bulging forehead. Its slightly turned-up nose, and the marks on the cheeks. This well carved mask is distinctive due to the complete ruff of grasses still attached to the mask and for the condition of itâs painted surface. Masks of this type belong to the general category of Dancing masks for young initiates known as Mbuya.This particular mask with long beard is called Kiwoyo. A sub-category of Mbuya. Kiwoyo represents the ancestors or the elders because of its beard. It is associated to the ancestor authority. When performing, Muya-Kiwoyo spreads positive forces in the community. Such masks were performing during the initiation of young boys, Mukanda, and also during healing rituals where they were invited to bring their curative powers and their spiritual assistance to the priest and the sick person.Miniatures of this mask made of wood, ivory, or bone were also carved and worn for curative purposes and also for individual protection.
