The Dye(Je) dance troop consists of the masks that represent monkey. Hyena, elephant, buffalo, roan antelope, hippopotamus, and dog. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past these masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. Guro Mask, Estate Sale Purchase
An unusual Guro face mask from Cote d'Ivoire. The workmanship on this piece is very fine. And the overall proportions are graceful in the way one looks for in good Guro sculpture. The projections around the face are unusual, and might indicate Senufo influence, an interesting example of stylistic cross-fertilization- the Senufo and Guro are neighboring peoples. I bought this piece from a generalist antique dealer in Montreal; it has a pair of old labels on the interior, one from Empire Auctions, a Montreal company(see photos) The mask measures 16 1/2" tall from tip of horns to bottom of chin, about 5 1/2" across, and is 4 1/2" deep. The stand in the images is just to position the piece for the photograph, and is not included in the sale.

They are often found attached to various chiefly regalia prominent on sword sheaths or chiefly stools. They are said to represent the heads of defeated enemies and are shown with some evidence of ... morelocal scarification which is rare among the Akan but often shown on terracotta sculptures. It is difficult to determine the age of this small mask however the attention to detail and the abstraction of the features show that this was the product of a skilled craftsman. There is a chunk taken out of the wood at the back of the chin(see pic) but it is not visible from the front unless you looked underneath. The stem from the chin in front is fractured at the base but still intact and very strong. I think his horns were longer as they seem rough. Dye masks are violent in their behavior and are not to be seen by females or children who lock themselves indoors or leave the village when the masks appear in the early light at daybreak. In the past these masks served as the highest display of male authority dispensing justice and exercising social control. The Dye masks are supreme symbols of male authority and were prominent in the past whereas today they still dance in the village but mostly appear at the funerals of prominent persons. UNUSUAL OLD GURO MASK FROM IVORY COAST WEST AFRICA This is an unusual Guro mask which I think is from the Ivory Coast. And I only say this because I cannot find any others like it. I don't know why this one differs from most of the Guro masks from West Africa. It is recognizably Guro in style: the rounded forehead, the finely sculptured nose and small mouth. The hair in this case is knotted, not upswept. This mask is painted a very dark reddish brown. The Gu, which this mask represents, is the wife of Zamble, a supernatural spirit; she is serene and beautiful. Sometimes the Baule and Guro styles are almost indistinguishable. There is a scarication pattern on the forehead; the profile is elegant. The broad wood collar attaches to a raffia cloak. The surface is polished. In width, this mask has a broad face: it is a little over nine inches ... morewide. Height is twelve inches. Most likely it was intended to be worn by a male dancer. Condition is very good. Exquiste & Outstanding Guro Harvest Mask with Roosters, Ivory Coast.
The art of the Guro is distinguished by extreme refinement. The Baule and Guro styles are difficult to separate. The Guro style. However, has one or two distinguishing marks: the face of the human mask is usually longish while the forehead and bridge of the nose form an elegant S-shaped profile. The tattoo pattern cut in relief on forehead and cheeks is a repetition of the short protruding tattoo marks on the men’s faces, and another characteristic of many Guro masks is the broad, wooden collar that serves as a fixture for the raffia cloak. There are polychrome, as well as black and brown polished masks. There is a much stronger tendency than with the Baule to add animal features to the human face– elephant’s ears, or a superstructure in the shape of a cockerel’s or other bird’s head. The hairdo is often carved in elaborate geometrical patterns, ... moresurmounted by horns or a totem animal. In some the nose forms an animal-like beak. Rather well known is the zamble mask combining the features of hyena. Crocodile(or leopard) and antelope. Most of them are polychrome. There are also human masks with long horns and a superstructure in the form of one or two human figures. The masks are supplemented by voluminous, multipartite costumes of palm-frond strips or reed-grass, which completely conceal the dancer’s body. At ceremonies the Je animal masks are the first to appear. And they prepare the audience for the performance of the more powerful, anthropomorphic figures.
