Bamana People hand carved and tribally used antique female and child Chi-Wara Antelope headdress/ ... morestatue which comes from Mali, Africa. An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa. And are renowned for their ... morecopious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their history of human sacrifice. The Yoruba culture is subdivided into a number of cults. Each identified by particular thing it holds sacred. This mask originates from the Gelede cult, which focuses its attention on the power of elderly women. During Gelede festivities helmet masks such as these are worn on or over the head with a raffia costume, and danced in reverence and celebration. On the'cheeks' of the face are large identifying scarification marks. It still has most of its original pigment, including white(kaolin) green, etc. Color of the pigment is faded in some areas, but still represented strongly for the most part, and the piece stands well on its own without support. Wear and age marks are in evidence as is common, including minor age cracking, rub marks, etc. but the piece does not appear to have undergone any serious breaks or repairs. This is a beautiful, prominent, eye catching standalone piece, and a highly coveted artform from the Yoruba culture! This piece measures in at 10.5" x 10.5" x 11" With a weight of three and a half pounds. MEDIUM: Wood. Pigment NOTHING we sell at African Tribal Creations is made in China. Title, Kuba Royal Helmet Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, ... morecooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Wide is 8 inches. Depth is 13 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A superb example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. The offered mask is a beautiful example with elaborate beadwork. This is a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, as the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Wire, vegetal fibers, pigment, Approximate Age, 1960s, Dimensions, 18 inches Diam. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, wear in places. Red/orange pigment stays in your hands when handling this headdress, used cotton cloth around the base, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. Even dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: Zulu headdress from the 1960s. The compound used to make the red/orange dye rubs off on your hands. Married Zulu women always keep their heads covered in public. For ceremonial occasions. They wear elaborately woven red hats with beadwork attached. It is then sewn into the hair of the wearer. Red powder is periodically reapplied. If the dried plant happens to have tiny yellow flowers in amongst the leaves then it's impepho(Helichrysum odoratissimum) which is used primarily as a ritual incense by Zulu diviners but is also used as a perfume and insect repellent: often found in bedding and pillows as well. A similar headdress is published in Hlengiwe Dube. Zulu Beadwork Talk with Beads. AfricaDirect Inc. 2009, p. 63. About the Inkehli/Isicholo headdresses Hlengiwe wrote: This one has beaded headbands(umqhawazi and isembozo) It is made out of dried grass. intertwined with red cotton and human hair and covered with red ochre. Which refers to the living cow and also evokes the blood of the earth. In areas such as Eshowe the headdresses are made with lots of beadwork. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Abstract"water spirit" masks, which usually include a human-form face displayed amidst an array of references to important totem animals, like crocodiles and hippopotamus. These masks are startling and fascinating, with levels of abstraction unique for an area known for the realistic depiction of the human form. Though their neighbors the Igbo craft similar water-spirit masks, the form certainly does not dominate their artistic output like it does the Ijo. Ijo water-spirit masks, usually worn on top of the head and extending horizontally, are used in a variety of functions, from ancestor worship, to religious and magical ceremonies. The realm of the water-spirits is important to the Ijo, who believe that is where both the unborn and the dead reside. They do use basic human forms, though these are found most-often on decorative panels instead of stand-alone statues. These panels serve a protective function wherever they are displayed. These are rare however, and found mostly in the western fringes of Ijo territory. Despite its relative rarity, the striking qualities of Ijo sc

Vintage Wooden Bust of African Woman With Up Swept Hair or Headdress
Vintage African carved wood Bust of Head of African Woman with up swept hair and/or wearing headdress. Statue is fastened to a square base. This Vintage African bust is in very good used condition with no discernible defects or damage to the wood with the exception of one or two very very small"dings" on the lower back of opposite side to which the statue is facing. In no way detracting from the natural beauty of the item. It is very substantially built, about 26 inches tall and weighs approximately 9 pounds. The wood is a deep rich brown. The lady's face is very smooth and polished. The stand on which it is fastened appears to be hand carved. Its finish has no gloss to it. There is loose small gauge wire around part of the lady's neck that came with the statue when we obtained it, serving no apparent purpose. It might be ... morethat at one time the bust had tightly woven wire around the neck to symbolize the stretched neck. This is simply a guess on our part and if this bust were to remain ours, we would remove the wire, as it no longer serves any useful or decorative purpose that we can determine. This item was in storage for several years and only recently removed from storage to list it for sale here.

In rituals of divination A-Tshol helps to determine the cause of misfortune and reveals God will. A-Tshol intervenes also during the funeral of a family leader. During the harvest festivals, the oldest man in the village invokes the ancestors and presents the village offerings to the ancestors in spreading seeds on the A-Tshol. This ceremony ends with a big family dinner. This piece was also used in the healing rituals. A-Tshol was worn on the top of the head. The dancer wore ordinary clothes. KURUMBA Headdress Antelope Authentic Mask #Alobalo African Tribal Art Burkina
KURUMBA Headdress Antelope Authentic Mask* Merry Chistmas* Type of objec t: Mask Material: wood. Pigment Ethnic Group: Bwa(Bwaba in plural) Country of origin: Burkina Faso Dimensions: 68/21 Cm(27/8.5 inches) Item condition: Good. Used. Hard wood. Good conservation. Kurumba use to paint their mask with dye in order to preserve its sharpness. About Kurumba arts: The Kurumba people live in the north of Burkina Faso. They cultivate millet and cotton. And rear cattle in the savannah regions. The Kurumba produce a mask headdress in the form of antelope head. The approach is naturalistic, although there is some stylization. The powerful neck supports a head with a pointed protruding snout, and this line extends upwards, beyond the long sharp ears, in a gentle curve ending with the vigorous towering horns. These finely-shaped antelope heads are colorfully ... morepainted with large triangles in white, brownish-red, black, and light-blue, and the triangles are filled in with rows of spots. The headdress represents Yirige. The culture hero, who drove away evil spirits at the first tilling of the land. Mask dancers descended from heaven repeat the deeds of the hero-founder Yirige and his children. The mask also appears at the death ritual following the mourning period. The mask. Which to an observer seems impossible for a dancer to balance, is fastened to the head with a plaited basket or by some other way. Other masks are rare. BAMANA CHIWARA HEADDRESS #2049~ For African Art Gallery
BAMANA CHIWARA HEADDRESS#2049 Tribe: Bamana. Country: Mali. Material: Wood.Metal. Size: 20.5" long(52 cm) x 12" 30.5 cm) Tall Item: 2049 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The term tyiwara or Chi wara(westernized form) denotes a cult. Divine power and a farming association at one and the same time. The cult reveals the presence of a healing power, supervising farming activities, which appears in the form os a pair of masked dancers. The festivities celebrate the manifestation in the world of men of the mythical animal which taught them how to farm. This animal does not correspond to any known species of nature' but rather is a compostite creature made up of the features of several species that include various antelopes, anteaters, pangolins, guinea fowl and cameleons. Tyi means"work" ... moreMore specifically agricultural labor. Wara means"wild animal" implying fierceness and the presence of claws. The expression tyiwara as a whole covers a number of meanings. It can be the name given to a power to which sons of praise and prayers are addressed, but it can also be a generic name for all agrarian cults supported by a youth association. An object well known to collectors of African Art. Is an elegant wooden crest carved with animal features and normally attached to a textile or rattan headdress. The dancer often wears a black raffia cape that covers him from head to foot, and a red textile cagoule decorated with cowrie shellsis sometimes used to extend the headdress. Two young officiants have the job of sprinkling water over the fibres, suggesting in a highly effective manner the driving rain. Check out my! by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Baga Nimba Headdress Mask, African Tribal Creations, art, Guinea, Dumba, Bagga
African Tribal Creations presents. A Baga Nimba Figure Resident to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Baga people are a curious and relatively small ethnic group that reside in a region which floods severely for half of the year. The only method of distance transportion is a dugout canoe, and fishing, as well as marshland agriculture(rice, kola nuts, etc. make up their primary livelihood. A monotheistic people, their only ritual is societal initiation, which occurs only once every twenty four years. Art among the Baga people, as well as tradition, has been significantly depleted and repressed due to the advent of Islam in the region. Their most well-known sculpture, is the Nimba(or Dumba) figure, a large, quasi-humanoid figure that displays a large pair of breasts and a long, narrow, almost equine head with a large nose and human-like facial features. ... moreThe figure stand on four legs and would be hoisted onto the dancer's shoulders, where he would be covered beneath the legs under a skirt of raffia fiber. The figures are produced in a number of sizes, the largest of which are used in fertility ceremonies, especially those timed around agricultural harvest periods. Nimba, in the Baga mythology, is a sort of'Earth mother' called upon for needs of fertility and is representative of the most dignified points of Baga culture. This beautiful Nimba figure is a large domestic size. Meaning a home or shrine sized figure, but not a full sized Nimba(which could often be four to five feet in height, weighing several hundred pounds) It is in beautiful condition, displaying normal age related wear, and is finely detailed, with the numerous linear identifying scarification marks characteristic of these figures. It bears a dark chocolate brown patina, encrusted in several places, which displays the common evidence of age, transport, and exposure, including minor rub marks, scratches, etc. The small spike on the back of the neck has at some point in the past been broken off. This appears to be a very old and minor break. It s

Most chiwara headdresses are part roan antelope and part man. Many chiwara have elements of other animals. The chiwara is one of the'societies" of the Bamana. VTG. AFRICAN TRIBAL PREGNANT? WOMAN W/MULTI COLORED BEADED HEADDRESS & FRONT!
Here we have a vintage handmade wooden African tribal pregnant? woman figurine. Up for your consideration! Ships Worldwide! Let me give you a little history on this piece and how I've acquired it. An uncle of mine used to do a great deal of traveling with his job and one of his stops was Africa. No matter what part of the world he travelled to, he managed to always bring something of interest back. This was sitting in his den on the mantle for years and at first, it used to scare the heck out of me, but then as I got older, I found it fascinating and appreciated the art of this beautiful hand crafted figurine, with all the colored beads on the headdress and on the front covering with gold colored triangles that border around the beads at the top of the headdress and also triangles that are carved into the backside of it too! When he retired ... moreand broke up house, I was given this African tribal woman figurine and have had it since. Now is the time to let someone else enjoy its beauty, as it is a very unique piece and a great addition to any collector of the African arts! This piece measures 6"w x 3 1/2"d x 15 3/4"h, the woman has a protruding stomach as if pregnant, but not sure. The elaborate headdress and design must signify something, but what? Please ask questions before bidding, thanks for looking and Good Luck!

Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks in several places. Neck repaired with glue, indigenous repairs, chips and wear, Chi Wara Antelope Headdress Female with Calf 6.6 ... moreFeet Additional Information: Chi-Wara Antelope headdress female and child probably from Bougouni or Dioila region. The female is a stylized human face and three high coiffure and pointed breasts. She stands on a small four-legged unidentifiable animal. Which is supposed to be the child. Chi-Wara or Tji Wara are"danced" twice a year, for the planting, and again after the harvest to honor the best farmer in the village. Sometimes the figure is above another animal, not always clearly definable as to species. The antelope represents the mythical character who taught the Bambara how to cultivate the land. The horn is a symbol of the millet's growth. This is a fascinating example of a Chi-Wara headcrest the would stand out in any collection. Zulu Married Woman's Headdress Isicholo African
Title, Zulu Married Woman's Headdress Isicholo African, Type of Object, Hat/Headrest, Country of Origin, South Africa, People, Zulu, Materials, cottonthreads and cloth. Additional Information: Zulu ... moreheaddress from the 1960s. As a signifier of respect for the new husband and the in-law family, a woven fibre beaded headband 9Umqwazi) is added

The 300.000 Yombe people live ... morein the Lower Zaire River, the region very important in the artistic history of Black Africa. The country that the Yombe inhabit is covered by forest. Primary Yombe social divisions are based on membership in one of nine clans. All clans trace their heritage to Mbaangala who had nine daughters whose names are the same as the clan that each founded. Yombe peoples more readily affiliate with fellow clan members, and each clan has its own set of social and moral rules. Historically the Yombe recognized a supreme chief, but today there are instead localized land chiefs who act as supreme judges and maintain a great deal of religious power. The Yombe are artistically prolific people. Such masks played an integral role in the real-life drama of prosecuting antisocial acts in Yombe communities. In this context, these masks inspired confidence in the divination specialist’s(diphomba’s) ability to dispense justice and install fear in the minds of people with guilty consciences. Munkika, Kasangu and Mulandwa. This one is most likely a Kasangu mask. All these masks were worn during initiation into the men’s warrior societies Idangani and Ibiku. During funeral ceremonies for dignitaries and in Boys' initiation and circumcision rituals. The dancer of this mask wears a knitted costume and holds a knife and antelope horns in his hands.
