DOGON OMONO WHITE MONKEY MASK#2262 Tribe: Dogon. Country: Mali. Material: Wood. Size: 28" 71.1 cm) Tall. Item: 2262 Condition: Good. Some age wear ... moreand bug damage. According to Dogon beliefs. The monkey represents wild, uncivilized, dangerous, and antisocial behavior the direct opposite of their beliefs about the way a proper, solid, upstanding Dogon person is expected to behave. The Dogon utilize three types of monkey masks which are identified solely by their color rather than their shape. For the Dogon, Dege is the black monkey, while the white monkey is known as Omono, and the red monkey is called Ko. The white monkey mask. Omono, composed of a face mask crowned by the head& bust of a monkey. The white monkey masker dances in the dance sequence to the fast dege rhythm. His dance is similar to that of the rabbit, consists of hopping from leg to leg while crossing one leg diagonally in front of the other. The man who wears the mask leans on a stick& sits apart from the crowd in a melancholy attitude, but he is encouraged to dance by the singers who chant: Monkey on a high tree, all eyes are on you, the drum is beating for you, move your head, move your legs, all the people have their eyes on you. The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! The Mali Dogon produce an enormous pantheon of masks. At last count at least 80. Due to their sheer number, and the complex, secretive nature of Dogon religion, it is sometimes impossible to connect a mask with a ritual. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point, into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500 AD, they found a place almost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid, but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here, spread out over about 150 miles, most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are

Florida, USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all utilize the use of various geometric shapes in their design, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called"Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, and it is considered absolutely ... morenecessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon. The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. They include among others- antelopes. Hares, lions, hyenas, cows, birds and monkeys. Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African SALE Was $99
Title, Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood. Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place ... morealmost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRIC

►SUPERB OLD DOGON MASK w/ NOMMO SUPERSTRUCTURE ~ African Art ► SALE was $2200
For further details, please visit the item description at our Website(click on the image above) Superb Old Dogon Mask with Nommo Superstructure(Mali) Description: On offer from our personal collection is this distinctive old face mask from the Dogon peoples of Mali. One of our first acquisitions of ethnographic art. We were fortunate to acquire this piece in the early 1970s from private collectors/dealers who left their native Africa to journey to the U.S. to exhibit the remarkable tribal antiquities field-collected by their father, who had remained in Africa. We believe this piece dates back to the 1940s or'50s. With its thin-walled construction. This well-carved mask is tall, rather slender, exhibits classic features. Incised scarifications create multiple patterns across the face, as well as on the torso& arms of the nommo superstructure ... moreperched atop the mask. Set in under the brow, open triangles form the eyes of the mask, while the nose takes on the traditional'arrow' shape used by the Dogon in much of their carvings, not least of which is the nommo figure that adorns this piece. Zoomorphic ears frame the upper brow of the mask's face. The powerful, crouching nommo superstructure bears hermaphroditic characteristics with its breasts& bearded face. Attachment holes perforate the side-rims of the piece. With a fine. Well-developed patina, the mask shows age- use-related wear. Despite some imperfections in the wood, including old insect damage(arrested) scrapes& abrasions, dry age-cracks, a few old chips(including those along the bottom& back rims) the mask is in good overall condition. A small area to the left on the mask's upper brow has worn through, forming a small, irregular hole. At just over 24-inches in height, this imposing piece makes a powerful, compelling display, would be an exce

Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece

In the West, the most famous of these masks is certainly the Kanaga mask. Its stylized face is set beneath two pairs of geometric arms directed towards the sky and the earth. The crocodile mask, carved with a long jaw, is thought to protect the Dogon from the Nyagma or vital fluids which emanate from a slain crocodile. Bird masks, known as Dyodyomini, evoke the captured bird in Dogon mythology. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. Provenance: Ex James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. Dama memorial ceremonies are held to accompany the dead into the ancestral realm and restore order to the universe. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, ... moreand it is considered absolutely necessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. They include among others- antelopes. Hares, lions, hyenas, cows, birds and monkeys. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Fine African Art Congo Hemba Tribal Mask Masque dogon yoruba songye senofu lobi
Old and fine wood African Hemba mask. Carved in very hard and heavy wood, good volume) and with a very nice encrusted sacrificial patina. Mid 20th Century. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful. The personification of this being depicts the potential of nature and the need to control its excesses through the dancing of the men’s society Ibombo ya Soho masks. These masks are not very large and upon occasions are worn at dancer’s waists or kept in the house to protect the household from malevolent forces. The Hemba monkey mask reflects the ability of the African artist to characterize the idea of life and death in brooding sculptural form. As well as the dancer’s ability to impart the lessons of living within a rationally structured society. Height: 33 cm. 13 in. Stand not included Read Before Bidding I am not a shop dealer.
