Florida, USA) There are nearly eighty styles of Dogon masks. And for the most part they all utilize the use of various geometric shapes in their design, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. Most masks have large geometric eyes and stylized features and are often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon continue an ancient masquerading tradition called"Dama" which commemorates the origin of death. Dama memorial ceremonies are held to accompany the dead into the ancestral realm and restore order to the universe. In these ceremonies there are a large number of performers, often a few hundred, and it is considered absolutely ... morenecessary to the ceremony. In the case of the dama, the timing, types of masks involved, and other ritual elements are often specific to one or two villages and may not resemble those seen in locations only several miles distant. The masks also appear during baga-bundo rites performed by small numbers of masqueraders before the burial of a male Dogon. The better known Kanaga and sirige masks are followed in the dama ceremony by masks that evoke the behavior of some of the animals that inhabit the regions where the Dogon live and hunt. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. One of our first acquisitions of ethnographic art. We were fortunate to acquire this piece in the early 1970s from private collectors/dealers who left their native Africa to journey to the U.S. to exhibit the remarkable tribal antiquities field-collected by their father, who had remained in Africa. We believe this piece dates back to the 1940s or'50s. With its thin-walled construction. This well-carved mask is tall, rather slender, exhibits classic features. Incised scarifications create multiple patterns across the face, as well as on the torso& arms of the nommo superstructure ... moreperched atop the mask. Set in under the brow, open triangles form the eyes of the mask, while the nose takes on the traditional'arrow' shape used by the Dogon in much of their carvings, not least of which is the nommo figure that adorns this piece. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece

You are bidding on a very nice and rare African Dogon Granary Carved Door. I haven't ran across many of these this nice. We have been collecting masks and items for many years. And have purchased most of them from two different people. One has a well known gallery and sells on ebay, the other one is a couple who went to Africa every year and brought thousands of dollars in African Art home with them and gave us first option at them in most cases. I love the presence and the"evocation" of this piece. A wooden face mask with a pointed forehead. Eyebrows in relief, circular ears, open eyes, a chimpanzee-like nose, an arched narrow opening in place of mouth. These traits identify this mask t the Chimpanzee. And monkey masks like this are a common theme among the Hemba people who live west of Lake Tanganyika and east of the River Zaire. Their sculpture has often been mistakenly identified to the Luba who are their larger neighbors. This monkey faced mask is worn not on the face but at the waist at the belt line. It is known among the Hemba simply as(Mwisi Gwa So'o, ibombo ya soho" or"Soko Muntu" which means'monkey ... moremask" The masks Ibombo ya soho represent the idea of death when they are danced at funerals. The exaggerated features of the Soho mask represents a creature of the bush that is half human and half monkey. It is a being that can be either dangerous or helpful.
