Bamana People hand carved and tribally used antique female and child Chi-Wara Antelope headdress/ ... morestatue which comes from Mali, Africa. Bamana Puppet with Two Riders with Stand Mali African
Title, Bamana Puppet with Two Riders with Stand Mali African Type of Object, Puppet, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Bamana, Materials, wood. Cotton cloth, pigment Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 22 inches H. x 12.5 inches x 4.5 inches On stand, Overall Condition, fair to good, Damage/Repair, legs missing. Chips, Additional Information: A Bamana dynamic couple of marionettes depicting riders wearing cotton cloth used as dance puppet. This is an interesting piece showing much handling and good age. It would stand well in any collection. Puppets are among the most delightful objects produced by the Bamana. And are popular and sought-after by collectors for their charm and color. The puppets are used in a morality play called"Sogo Bo. Bamana men frequently have more than one wife, and the Sogo Bo dance explores the complex ... moredynamics inherent in such households. Among the Bamana people of Mali, puppets appear in villages on stages, where they represent various typecast characters living in the village and that we have all experienced. The puppets known as Merenkun will satirize social and personal behavior of the braggart, the loose woman, the miser and the foreigner. The puppets often have arms or movable parts and will be covered in clothing and will be accompanied by songs that paraphrase the movements of the puppets as they make social comments upon the excessive behavior of their subjects. The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century. Though archeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occurred during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though they still consider themselve

The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind. These stunning, zoomorphic headdresses, danced during the planting of crops, employ the carved head and horns of antelopes, as well as zig-zag, open-work designs, reportedly representing the path of the sun. A basketry, cap-like structure is attached to the bottom so that it can be worn. Other recognizable masks are not as well understood, and their use reflects the mind-boggling complexity of the predominantly animist Bamana religion. Among these are the animal-form masks such as this, often quite abstract, used in the"kono" and"kore" societi

The N'tomo society is one of six semi-secret societies in the culture of the Bambara ethnic group. It is associated with uncircumcised boys. And their initiation into Bambara society. Worn by village elders, the N'tomo masks generally have very small, narrow mouths, intended to encourage silence among the young initiates, as the primary role of the N'tomo is to instruct the young boys in the basics of Bambara society. It emphasizes ... morediscipline, an important virtue before graduating into the Koré and other societies. The masks generally display an ovoid and anthropomorphic face, with a broad row of horns across the top, with a figure occasionally extending from the mask's forehead. This N'tomo mask is a fine example. With a'forehead' embellishment of the Chi Wara, a mythological antelope-inspired creature for which the Bambara are known. It is a characteristic mask of the style, bearing a wide row of horns in front of which is the antelope effigy. The eye holes are prominent and circular, congruent with most masks produced by the Bambara, and its stylistic design, as with many in the genre, is intended to blend elements of mankind and other animal species together into one piece. This mask is finely detailed, and in quite good condition given its age. The piece does not appear to have undergone any notable breaks or repairs. The wood displays rub, scratch, and wear marks that indicate signs of age. This mask is light in weight despite and has a reasonably large superstructure. This is an interesting piece that will compliment any fine West African collection! Dimensions are 24&quo

During these ceremonies. Youths are taught masculine virtues through chanting and the symbolic use of animal masks. Many animals are represented, among them the antelope, hyena, lion and monkey, each with their own positive attributes. The diverse range of styles, from realistic to wildly abstract, have made Bamana kore masks extremely popular with collectors. The genesis of the Bamana as a definable culture can be traced back to the 17th century, though archaeological evidence hints that they could be much older. They are of Mandinke origin and today are the largest culture in Mali. The zenith of Bamana culture occured during the late 18th century during the reign of N'golo Diara, who conquered the Peul tribe and occupied the important cities of Timbuktu and Djenne. They remained powerful until conquered by the French in 1892. Recently, like many African cultures, they have been affected by Islamic settlers from the east. Though the Bamana still consider themselves animists, many villagers now practice a hybrid brand of both traditional and Islamic religions. This has allowed these competing cultures to coexist peacefully. Recommended Reading: Jean

There is a long tradition of figurative ... moreiron. Bronze and brass casting in the Western Sudan reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12 th century. The age of this interestingly cast iron mask is undetermined but it does reflect an earlier period of bronze or brass casting. The facial features on this mask are similar to those found on wood sculptures from the Bamana. These masks are forged by blacksmiths working them into shapes that could be worn. Simply carried, or kept in a ritual location. Today there is no active tradition of these masks being used. In fact as little is known about forged iron masks among the Bamana or Dogon or Senufo or any of the Western Sudanic groups it would be conjecture to assert more than this at this time. This mask does indicate the skill of the blacksmith in forging a mask out of iron. A medium much more difficult to work than wood. 72619* All content. Antique primitive African Bamana Mali? carving of man. Fertility idol?
I bought this figure at an estate sale along with a few others I have listed separately. The man I bought them from said his grandparents had acquired them while in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know. This figure is very old and I have tried to take ample pics to it's condition. It looks like it could be a fertility statue as it is anatomically correct for a male figure. There is a white substance on the base. It looks like paint but I was afraid to remove it. Please ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. I am not am expert in this area. Thanks for looking and happy bidding. Please see my other auctions. All pieces listed came from same estate. Posted with

BAMANA CHIWARA HEADDRESS #2049~ For African Art Gallery
BAMANA CHIWARA HEADDRESS#2049 Tribe: Bamana. Country: Mali. Material: Wood.Metal. Size: 20.5" long(52 cm) x 12" 30.5 cm) Tall Item: 2049 Condition: Good. Provenance: James E. Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The term tyiwara or Chi wara(westernized form) denotes a cult. Divine power and a farming association at one and the same time. The cult reveals the presence of a healing power, supervising farming activities, which appears in the form os a pair of masked dancers. The festivities celebrate the manifestation in the world of men of the mythical animal which taught them how to farm. This animal does not correspond to any known species of nature' but rather is a compostite creature made up of the features of several species that include various antelopes, anteaters, pangolins, guinea fowl and cameleons. Tyi means"work" ... moreMore specifically agricultural labor. Wara means"wild animal" implying fierceness and the presence of claws. The expression tyiwara as a whole covers a number of meanings. It can be the name given to a power to which sons of praise and prayers are addressed, but it can also be a generic name for all agrarian cults supported by a youth association. An object well known to collectors of African Art. Is an elegant wooden crest carved with animal features and normally attached to a textile or rattan headdress. The dancer often wears a black raffia cape that covers him from head to foot, and a red textile cagoule decorated with cowrie shellsis sometimes used to extend the headdress. Two young officiants have the job of sprinkling water over the fibres, suggesting in a highly effective manner the driving rain. Check out my! by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Bamana Chiwara Antelope Headdress w Hat and custom stand TjiWara African Mask
A beautiful. Vintage(30-60 year old) danced and used Bamana Chiwara(of which numerous spellings including Chi Wara and Tji Wara) headdresses appear in pairs for planting and harvest festivals. Carved of wood, they are worn tied to a basket on the head and thus are actually a headdress and not a mask. The body is hidden by a raffia or hemp fiber costume. The chiwara is the mythical hero who came from the skies to teach the people to farm. Tji is a word that means work and‘wara” is animal, thus a Tji Wara is an animal of labor or work. Most chiwara headdresses are part roan antelope and part man. Many chiwara have elements of other animals. The chiwara is one of the'societies" of the Bamana. African tribal currency Bamana iron lamp, outdoors, decor, ethnographic art,Mali
This is a multi-armed lamp with cups to hold oil at the end of the arms. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support ... moreof the lamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 32" in length and 15" in width. It is thought to come from the late 19th or early 20th century.

On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous ... moresecret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. Vintage Carved Zoomorphic Kono Helmet Mask, Bamana, Mali
Wonderful mid-century/ vintage carved zoomorphic kono helmet mask(Bamana aka Bambara) Mask was worn on top of the head. Like a cap, not over the face. Ceremonial/ ritual purpose. Info about kono helmet masks: Masks of the Kono association. Which enforces civic morality, are also elongated and encrusted with sacrificial material. The kono masks were also used in agricultural rituals. Mostly to petition for a good harvest. They usually represent an animal head with long open snout and long ears standing in a V from the head, often covered with mud. In contrast to komo masks. Which are covered with feathers, horns and teeth, those of the kono society are elegant and simple. The headdress are worn horizontally. Bamana jow(initiation societies) have a tremendous importance in social and religious life. In jow like Komo, Kono, Nama, and Ci-wara, ... moreamong others, one gains access to secret knowledge by traveling and working for a reputed master(soma) Some villages may not have even a single jo, while in many others several societies may coexist and compete with one another. Although jow are considered men's organizations, in numerous cases women may make offerings to and even seek help from one of the jo deities. Furthermore, each jo has one female official who may perform important ritual functions, though she is not supposed to know the society's secrets. Bamana rely on their jow for social interaction and as a means to address such problems as sickness, misfortune, and mystical aggression. While these societies are influential in political and judicial matters, today most of their power is overshadowed by state institutions and Islam. from: http:www.hamillgallery.com/BAMANA/BamanaKonoMasks/BamanaKonoMasks.html Size: mask is approx. 13 1/2 inches tall. 6 3/4 in. from ear to ear, and 4 1/2 in. deep at the forehead. African tribal currency Bamana iron oil lamp or candle holder ethnographic art
This is a multi-armed lamp with a cup to hold oil at the front. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support of the ... morelamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 12" in height and 5" in width.

Also called Bamana, form the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy the central part of the country, in an area of savannah. They live principally from agriculture, with some subsidiary cattle rearing in the northern part of their territory. The Bambara people are predominantly animists, although recently the Muslim faith has been spreading among them. The Bambara kingdom was founded in the 17th century and reached its pinnacle between 176o, and 1787 during the reign of N'golo Diarra. N'golo Diarra is credited with conquering the Peul people and in turn claimed the cities of Dienne and Timbuktu. However, during the 19th century, the kingdom began to decline and ultimately fell to the French when they arrived in 1892. For the most part, Bambara society is structured around six male societies, known as the Dyow(sing. Dyo) The stylistic variations in Bambara art are extreme sculptures, masks and headdresses display either stylized or realistic features, and either weathered or encrusted patinas. Until quite recently, the function of Bambara pieces was shrouded in mystery, but in the last twenty years field s
