This is an original. Vintage, beaded& hand-crafted diviners belt, created in Nigeria-Western Africa(Yoruba People Tribe) The piece is 53" tall ... moreby 7" in width. The clever design and imagery on the belt features four men and women-dancing and one on a sort of swing. The diviners belt is also known as the King's Belt with each beaded color signifying a different god. The fact that this piece is almost entirely beaded suggests it is of the most important quality! The religious practices and ceremonies of Shango became the basis of Santeria when mixed with Western European religious influences, especially Catholicism, and transplanted to the New World. If anyone has any additional information about tribe/country on this, I'd love to hear what you know. Informational notes on this was very limited. This item is from a small private collection of primarily African tribal collectibles/art(also includes a few North West/Canadian/Eskimo/Asian pieces/US Art Work-paintings and lithographs) Most of the African material was collected in the 1970s and represents varies tribes from the Cameroon. Zimbabwe, Ghana, Burkino Faso and others.

Swords like this one would be carried in parades and used for decoration or ritual purposes. It would indicate the rank of the owner or reflect the worship of Ogun. The God of Iron. The sheath itself is a wonderful piece of art with all the beadwork on it. This exquisite sword kept in a sheath covered with beads in an amazing decorative work is a fine example of one of the most famous metalworking traditions in world history. The motifs on this sheath and the sword handle are stunning. From the well-known lozenge and splendid interlaced motifs, to the schematic motifs of a warrior, man ridding an ox, and those of monkeys and tortoise. One can only imagine the true splendor of the old Benin and even the today court of Yoruba. Though this is a"modern" reproduction, that is less than 100 years old, its beauty as an expression of the intricate, original style cannot be underestimated. Yoruba Beaded Maternity Group figure - Cosmetic Container African
Beads were signs of wealth and status for the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Many Yoruba sacred and secular objects were embellished with elaborate images and symbolic designs created by small glass beads. Exhibiting a wide diversity in size. Symbolism, intimacy and style, African maternity figures depict the ideals of beauty, fertility, character and action and many signify much more, whether the primordial mother or a legendary founding ancestor. Commonly used as shrine figures, they were often objects of petitions or prayers for fertility and successful births. The prevelance of the maternity theme testifies to the importance of women and children to the continuity of each people. Offered today is a beaded Yoruba maternity group. I was told that this particular maternity figure was most likely a cosmetic holder. As you can see. The lid of the ... morecentral container comes off. This colorful beaded Yoruba family group features amother kneeling with 3 children-2 standing and one on her back. Mother is holding a bowl which was used as a cosmetic container; applying these afforded protection from evil spirits. This set is about 45-60 years old. according to previous owner) The approximate measurements of this group: 15 inches high-mother 7 inches high-standing children 8 inches wide Don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of African history! It would be a great addition to your African artifact collection. Now for the business details. Payment by Paypal is due within 3 days of the close of the sale. I am sorry. Fantastic Beaded Yoruba Figure Group
This is a quite old Yoruba piece. I bought it about 15 years ago from the estate of a man who lived in Africa in the 1940's and early 1950's and purchased many pieces while he was there. This piece was obviously old when he bought it. It would probably have been the top sculpture for a basket. It is quite large at about 20" tall and approximately 12" in diameter. The bead work is in amazing good condition. Considering the age, with no missing beads that I can see and the beadwork is tight. It is fairly dirty, but I was afraid to clean it up and take away from the age that it shows. It has a man on a horse with a person standin on each side. Each of the figures is beaded and then then each have a beaded tunic on top of that. Because of shipping costs. I am selling this USA shipment only.

Yoruba African Basket exquisitely beaded and patterned , Old and Previously Used
This African basket was made by a member of the Yoruba Tribe. It is old but in very good condition. It has some uniform darkening consistent with wear from use. The variations in color in the photos are due to the use or non use of the flash on the camera. This piece stands approximately 10.5 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter. The colored glass beads are used in the three designs. The basket is lined with cowry shells on both the lip and base. A few are missing. The Yoruba people live in Southwest Nigeria and Benin. They have developed a variety of different artistic forms including pottery. Weaving, beadwork, metalwork, and mask making. Most artwork is made to honor the gods and ancestors and since there are more then 401 known gods to the Yoruba there is much sculpture and artwork made. Because of the vastness in the number of gods, ... morethe Yoruba have been compared to the ancient Greeks in the amount of gods and in the similarities between the structures of the gods. The Yoruba have started to become quite popular among Africans all over the world who claim the Yoruba as their family roots and follow the religion and culture of the Yoruba.
