This is a very nice Vintage Kenyan Turkana Wood Headrest with a tension rope made from animal gut or leather. Approximately 6” tall and 7” across at the ... morebase. The handcrafted wood shows a very nice grain pattern and evidence of age wear. This beautifully sculptural headrest was cherished and used by nomadic tribesmen of Kenya. It has a rich patina as evidence of its dark brown/black color. These surfaces were rubbed with oils, pumices, and other organic materials. Another reason for their dark color was their placement near a smoking fire. Like other headrests, these kept men's ornately coiffured hairstyles while sleeping. The leather strap was used when traveling. This piece is also very sculptural. Please use the photos as reference and ask any questions.

African tribal Ethiopian carved headrest sculpture ethnographic art, decor 002
Ethiopian headrests are often times intricately carved and other times they are very simple yet profound in their shape and elegance. This particular headrest has a very primitive charm. Serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate. And protecting their hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment and were also seen as the seat of dreams. Dreams are seen as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 7" wide and 6.5" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use. If you smell this headrest you will smell the remains of that wonderful odor of the fire that was burning while the owner was sleeping ... moreor resting near by. What a wonderful aroma evoking images of tribal life! The measurements are 6.5" tall and 5.5" across the top and 4.5" across the bottom. It's a bit asymmetrical which adds to its charm.

Luba Caryatid Headrest DR Congo African Miniature

Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 5 inches H. x 2.75 inches W. Overall Condition, Fair to good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, wear. Scrapes, chips, scratches, Additional Information: A miniature caryatid headrest supported by a sitting female figure. There is a hole ... morein the seat at top. The small size of this piece suggests that this was used as a symbol and shrine piece rather than as a normal headrest which normally be should bigger than this example. This caryatid headrest has a number of classic Luba attributes: the sitting posture. The hairstyle Style, and facial features. The presence of a female on this headrest is understandable: Luba art is almost invariably female art. Woman is central in the social and political life of the Luba, and their art reflects this. Luba always carve their headrests with great care which reflects the importance of these artifacts to the owner. Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years, and th

Antique Primitive African? Wooden Carved Headrest with Spoon Billed Bird on top
Up for auction is a rare piece that I do not know much about but I will try to explain the best I can. It was bought at a doctor estate sale last year. I was told that it was made in Africa and that it was a headrest. It has been carved from one solid piece of pale wood. Even the legs are a part of the same piece with no nails, glue, or screws. There is a carving of a spoon billed bird on the top. The condition for this type of item is very good. There is one old chip on the top near the birds feet but this looks like it could have been done in the carving process? Please look at all of the photos for more details. The size is approx. 14 1/2" long. 5" tall, and 5 1/2" wide. Thank you for looking and Happy Bidding! Sorry. I only ship within the USA

Which are part of the northwestern Congo, Western Ethiopia, Southern Uganda and Kenya, northern Tanzania, and southern Sudan. These groups move according to the seasons from place to place in the search of water and gazing land for good pasturage. The Dinka inhabit the vast savanna of southern Sudan in Africa. ... moreAlthough the Dinka are the largest ethnic group in Sudan, their historical background remains obscured. As far as we know, the Dinka settled in the area around 1800 and often have been often in conflict with their neighboring peoples, such as the Atuot. Their reputation as redoubtable warriors comes from their successfully defense against the Ottoman centuries ago. Being a Valiant warrior is an important value the Dinka transmits to the youth. This value is taught through the initiation of young boys. At the end of the initiation, the boys are presented with a spear, a club and a shield, the equipment of a warrior. The lifestyle of the Dinka is that of the nomad and herders. Today Dinka people raise cattle and practice agriculture. Little is known about their art. However, Dinka personal and body adornments are among the most astonishing on the all continent. The Dinka nomadic lifestyle is reflected in their art. In fact, the Dinka have excelled in the production of small objects, easy to carry. Stools and headrests are among these precious objects. Mali African Additional Information: A long headrest in the form of an ... moreanimal with four legs. This headrest comes from the Dogon people. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This headrest/stool may reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. Scholars do not have enough evidences to confirm if the Dogon have produced and used headrests. Number of them state that most of the headrests attributed to the Dogon were carved by the Tellem, an old population who first occupied the Dogon region. A few scholars support that headrests were carved and used by the Dogon, especially by Hogon priests and during burial ceremonies. The head on this headrest/stool is similar to these found on some Dogon artifacts. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. Amez DOGON STATUARY, Ezra
Old African Headrest Ethiopian with Sticky Patina
This neck or head rest would have been carried on the belt of a tribesman and attached by a carved loop. Which has broken off. The carver of this rest has used a cross-hatched incised pattern allover to enrich the surface. The somewhat randomly incised linear designs are enhanced from headrest's use and the oils used to condition it. The carved loop holding the leather strap(now gone) would have made this piece very sculptural and unique. This tribe lived along the river and the pumice-like sticky surface must have often rested in dark soil among the vegetation. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK COMMENTS: Nuclear Blast Proof Packaging! African Headrest Ethiopian - Heavy Patina
Stylistically unique. This head or neck-rest has been carved from a single block of wood and custom shaped for his user. The carver has created a dramatic curve to cradle the tribesmen's head. This deep curve contrasts with the geometrical nature of the flat bottom. This piece has a beautiful patina of black and brown. The rich patina is evidence that it has been cherished and cared for. The still-sticky patina comes from use, organic oils, ash and aging of the wood. CUSTOMER FEEDBACK COMMENTS: Nuclear Blast Proof Packaging! Items in perfect condition! African Headrest Turkana - Kenya Rich Patina
This beautifully sculptural headrest was cherished and used by nomadic tribesmen of Kenya. It has a rich patina as evidence of its dark brown/black color. These surfaces were rubbed with oils. Pumices, and other organic materials. Another reason for their dark color was their placement near a smoking fire. Like other headrests, these kept men's ornately coiffured hairstyles while sleeping. The leather strap was used when traveling. This piece is also very sculptural. This powerfully carved rest is both solid and geometrically elegant. BACKGROUND The Bongo were at one time a large culture living in the south of the Sudan. And are most-likely part of a very ancient Nilotic lineage. However, over time, due to migration to find food and firewood, along with the slave trade, their numbers were reduced. By the middle of the 20th century their population was estimated at less that 200,000, spread over a wide area, and into parts of the northern Congo and western Tanzania. In fact, they virtually no longer exist as a distinct group, with almost total assimilation into neighboring homelands. The Bongo honored heroic warriors or hunters with sculpted grave markers known as"Ngya, placed over burials ceremonially a year after death, to insure that they were welcomed into the village of the ancestors. Knowledge of the Bongo is based almost entirely on these spectacular, ornate, and haunting grave posts. They produce small figures as well, probably for apotropaic and ancestral purposes, but these are stylistically vague, and resemble similar figures from northwestern Tanzania, making them very difficult to identify. This headrest was obtained on one of my trips to Equatorial Guinea seven years ago. It was obtained from a trader who traded for it from a village on the African Mainland. A small piece has been chipped from the base. Size: 4 3/4" H 9" W 4" D Materials: Wood
