ANTIQUE TIKAR. CAMEROON AFRICAN TRIBAL CAST BRONZE MASK Less well-known that the bronzes of Benin. Cameroonian Tikar lost-wax casts are exceptional West ... moreAfrican artworks. The Tikar are especially noted for their masks, which were originally used in harvest ceremonies. This superb Tikar mask is finely crafted and has a rich patina consistent with age and use. It measures 16.5" by 10" by 7.5" and is a substantial cast. Engraved circles decorate the cheeks; holes around the base(see photo) may once have secured cloth or other woven material to the casting. Casting irregularities around the top of the piece are artifacts of the production process and should be appreciated as such. There is also a small indentation on the left cheek. Purpose unknown. Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head
Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin Princess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition ... moreis otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. African Tribal Rare Benin Antique Cast Bronze - Horseman warrior
Fine Benin Antique(circa mid- late 1800s) Cast Bronze Horseman Warrior. From the old private collection of the internationally celebrated artist and ardent Africanist. This is a rare. Museum quality authentic artifact(circa mid- late 1800s) representing a Horseman warrior. The item is about 10" x 8 1/2 ta. In excellent antique condition. The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. The political systems that were monarchial, were well established before the fourteenth century. The Rulers of Benin and Yoruba had close ties, and by the fifteenth century Benin became and important power in the region. With the backing of the monarchy selected artists of Benin developed a special style of sculpture vastly different from the rest of the region. They produced many fine bronze and or brass heads. Figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular ... moremetal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos to the Niger Delta. Back in the late 19th century when the British forces invaded Benin City. They were overwhelmed to find artistic sculptures cast in brass/bronze. They could not believe the technological sophistication and exquisite beauty and quality of these objects. What they saw was a total contradiction to what many westerners believed or assumed about Africa. The above was too much for the British forces to bear and they swiftly concocted excuses- The sculptures must have been made by the Portuguese. The Egyptians, or the lost tribes of Israel" The so-called"Portuguese. Egyptian or Israeli" sculptures eventually found their way to Britain and later to other parts of Europe, where it was first classified Benin bronze sculpture, despite it being largely of brass. MUSEUM QUALITY LARGE ANTIQUE BENIN BRONZE CONTAINER with FIGURES 20" TALL
BENIN ROYAL CONTAINER BRONZE NIGERIA 20" TALL. 15" ACROSS The kingdom of Benin came to an abrupt end when the British invaded them in 1897. We also know that thin castings were made before the lucrative slave trade began. This casting is very heavy. The rise of the very old kingdom of Ife can be traced back to the 11th century. Their bronze casting skills were well known and it was their craftsmen that. By mutual arrangement, taught the younger Kingdom of Benin the art of casting bronze by what is known as the"Lost Wax Method" The Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. Following the bloody British punitive expedition to Nigeria ... morein 1897, about three thousand brass, horn and wooden objects were consigned to the Western world. The numerous brass heads and figures cast by Benin metalworkers were created for the royal palace, where a new oba would dedicate an altar to his predecessor. The majority of everyday Benin objects were made for and associated with court ceremonies. During the British punitive expedition, more than 1,000 brass plaques were appropriated from the oba’s palace. Dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. These plaques were secreted in a storage room. It is thought that they were nailed to palace walls and pillars as a form of decoration or as references to protocol. They show the oba in full regalia along with his nobility, warriors and Portuguese traders. The most elaborate ones display a procession of up to nine people, while others depict only fish or birds. Despite the disappearance of the Benin kingdom, the Yoruba people living on its territory continued to produce artwork inspired by the great royal art of Benin. This is a much sought after museum quality collectors piece. AN AGED PATINATED SURFACE. CONDITION- EXCELLENT? YEARS OLD? IT IS VERY HARD TO TELL. SHIPPING $100.00 + USA $ 2

BENIN ROOSTER - ALTER FIGURE - BRONZE
BENIN ROOSTER- ALTER FIGURE This striking and powerful bronze rooster was originally placed upon the commemorative altar of a deceased queen mother(Iyoba) in one of the royal courts of Benin. Nigeria. The kingdom of Benin can justifiably lay claim to having produced the finest artists and craftsmen in the history of the African continent. Particularly important– and perhaps domineering– queen mothers(Iyoba) were also sometimes commemorated in this way, following an edict laid down by Oba Esigie in the early 16th century. Perhaps the best-known Iyoba-specific artifact is the rooster, or Eson. The seemingly overtly male symbolism of the rooster is misleading; the word“Eson” is an abbreviation of the praise name“Eson, Ogoro Madagba” the cock that crows at the head of the harem” which was an honorific title for the Oba’s first wife and thus the ... moremother of the future king. This beautiful example measures 9.5 inches tall.

Nigeria: Tribal used Leopard Bronze figure from Benin.
Nigeria: Tribal used Leopard Bronze figure from Benin. Hand carved from bronze. Height: 12 cm x 11 cm. Hand ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social ... moreinfluence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Proportions are true to Large Old and Rare Tribal us. Ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. AMAZING BENIN BRONZE FIGURE OF A SEATED WOMEN COOKING MEASURES 11" H BY 3" W A MUST FOR ANYONE'S COLLECTION DO NOT MISS IT THANKS Benin. Nigeria When British forces entered Benin City in 1897 they were surprised to find large quantities of cast brass objects. Benin Oba Commemoritive Bronze Head
The extraordinary bronzes of the Benin kingdom in what is now Nigeria exhibit a virtuosity and sophistication of style that has astonished the Western world since they were visited in the 15th Century. Their work was brought to Europe following a punitive expedition by the British in 1897. Causing a great sensation. The people of Benin, called Bini, are descended from the Ife, also known for their remarkable bronzes. Almost all Benin art was created to honor the king, or Oba, who has reigned, with his ancestors, from the 15th century. Styles have changed over the years. Although similar to many older works, this is a 20th C. piece. Each is still sculpted by hand, then cast in bronze by the lost wax process. African tribal bronze sculpture ethnographic art Benin Nigeria authentic
According to the YORUBA peoples myth of the origin of IFE it was the place where the Gods descended from the skies to populate the world. According to tradition when the first OBA(Benin King) died his head was sent to IFE for burial with IFE sending back a bronze head for the ancestors altar. Impressed by this creation Benin royalty beseech-ed the IFE king to send an artist who could teach the art of bronze work to Benin craftsmen. This began the tradition of Benin bronze work. This head measures 13.5" high by 6" deep and 5" wide. The exact age is unknown but thought to be early 20th century. Bronze statues like this were most frequently found on the palace altar.

Benin Bronze Head Edo Nigeria Africa SALE Was $450
Title, Bronze Head with Magical Symbols Replica Nigeria, Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Edo people at Benin, Materials, Brass/Copper Alloy, Approximate Age, 20th-21st Century. Modeled after an original dating approximately Early 1700s(After Dark& Foreman. 1960:53) but dating form the recent past. Dimensions, 16 inches height. 8 inches width, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Slight casting flaws and dents in places, T ype of Object: Bronze Cast Sculpture Additional Information: The famous royal center of Benin in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects and bronze heads cast in bronze including the original of this late replica that was also cast in Nigeria. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba. The ruler. This bronze cast head is of an Oba, a ruler at Benin, who ... morestill rules today. This head is based upon an early 18th century original and shows a stylized head with magical and symbolic motifs over its surface. Serpents are shown emerging from the eyes and nostrils shown devouring frogs. Four birds stand as part of a crown like headdress most likely representing vultures that are prominent in Benin mythology and religion. The head is a mixture of magical and symbolic motifs known in other examples of Benin art. The modern caster was true to his early model inasmuch as he has set small bits of iron into the eyes representing the pupils and retaining the overall sensibility of the original. That this is a replica cannot be doubted. But what is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this head continue a tradition nearly 500 years old at Benin and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art. The Benin Kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king around 1300. But it was not until the 15th/16thC that the kingdom reached its zenith. Sometime in the 15thC, members of the kingdom made contact with Portuguese traders living along the coast, and it is likely that some of the skills found in their metalworks were learned from these interactions. The originals of these castings date to the 12th to 15th centuries and are worth millions of dollars. The present day inhabitants, Edo

BACKGROUND The powerful ... moreancient Benin kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king in the early 14th century AD. It was situated in the forest area of southern Nigeria. The art of bronze casting was introduced around the year 1280. The kingdom reached its maximum size and artistic splendor in the 15th and 16th century. For a long time the Benin bronze sculptures were the only historical evidence dating back several centuries into the West African past. And both the level of technical accomplishment attained in bronze casting, as well as the monumental vigor of the figures represented, were the object of great admiration. Benin bronzes are better known than the artworks from Ife or Owo due to their presence in Western museums since 1890s. In the thirteenth century, the city of Benin was an agglomeration of farms enclosed by walls and a ditch. Each clan was subject to the Oba(king) The“Benin style” is a court art from the palace of the Oba, and has nothing in common with tribal art. The Benin Oba employed a guild of artisans who all lived in the same district of the city. Bronze figures ordered by the king were kept in the palace. The empire flourished until 1897, when the palace was sacked by the

Superb African Bronze Rooster Benin, Nigeria 12"1/2 H
Superb Benin Bronze figure of a rooster measures Approx: 12"1/2 h by 8"w The Benin Empire dates back to prehistoric times. Figurines, brass plaques, and large rectangular metal pictures, which were used to decorate the Oba's palace. The Benin Empire soon became the largest of the political systems of the Guinea Coast and toward the middle of the sixteenth century; the Oba ruled an area. Which spread from modern Lagos ... moreto the Niger Delta. Egyptian or Israeli" sculptures eventually found their way to Britain and later to other parts of Europe, where it was first classified as. Despite it being largely of brass.
