Title, Kuba Textile Square Kasai Velvet Raffia African, Type of Object, Raffia Handwoven Textile, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba, Materials, ... moreRaffia palm fibers. Dyes, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 16.5 inches x 18.5 inches, Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, General wear, Additional Information: The following are excerpts from Kuba Textiles and Design. By Elizabeth S. Bennett and Niangi Batulukisi Ph.D. In sub-Saharan Africa. Where representative art has flourished for centuries, carvers and crafts people have typically taken for their subjects human figures, animals, plants, and elements of the natural world. Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Although part of a tradition that stretches back 400 years, Kuba textiles have a strikingly modern look. They use improvised systems of signs, lines, colors, and textures, often in the form of complex geometric rectilinear patterns. Their appliqués are reminiscent of works by 19th- and 20th-century masters like Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Penck, and Chellida. This is no coincidence: all of those artists were inspired by Kuba design! The most commonly known of the Kuba textiles are the cut-pile Shoowa or Kasai Velvets. Named after the river along which the BaKuba live. Improvisation and irregularity characterize the Kasai Velvets. This is because the weaver works without a plan or preliminary sketching, though the model can occasionally be displayed on the cloth in advance using black thread. Often the design is built up from memory, repeating the most common designs and color combinations found in the region. The message conveyed is up to the artist, who is the only one who can explain what he or she intended to represent. Originally Kasai

This fine Atie( Attye) figure contains many of the physical ideals admired and sought after in African womanhood. I.e. a tall elongated torso, a serene“unreadable” ... moreface with downcast eyes, muscular arms and legs denoting strength and pointed breasts signaling fertility. The carving’s elegant neck is exaggeratedly long and is decorated with raised scarification. A permanent body adornment which is also present in other parts of the statue’s body such as its back. The imposing hairstyle. Carefully coiffed in raised masses and the protruding navel are additional noteworthy elements which add to this statue’s uniqueness. The Atie people live in the Lagoon Area of the Ivory Coast. Producing carvings which are stylistically influenced by the neighboring Baule and Akan tribes. This carving has an overall weathered greyish-brown patina with some encrustation especially in the recessed areas of the hair and scarification. Both feet have worn off at the ankles from being set on the exposed ground over the years. This carving is very stable. H = 12” excluding base. Wooden base is included in this auction. I have included pictures of a male Atie figures from an auction catalogue so that you may observe the similarity between its patina with that of the piece being listed. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = I am currently downsizing and selling part of my personal collection of ethnographic and related materials in order to help pay for my next major project( relocating to a new residence. Please be aware. Therefore, that during the next few weeks or so, I plan to list many of these interesting and, often, unique objects on eBay. Also note that: PayPal is my accepted mode of payment. Please pay within 48 hours after winning the auction. Unpaid items will most probably be re-listed after the fifth day of non-payment. Because of my present scheduling restraints. I am currently limiting my sales and shipping ONLY to bidders within the United States but this may change in the future. S

Natives of Gabon. The Punu people were originally a part of a kingdom of distinct cultures that migrated northward from Angola. Their art is considered remarkable among the arts of Africa partly for its immediately recognizable style, and partly because this style appears to resemble the arts of eastern Asia, though an influence from this region has never been established. The Punu people are subdivided into clans, which are further subdivided into family units. A relative coherence within the culture is maintained through a society referred to as moukoudji. The society is primarily charged with maintaining a balance of harmony among the people. Through magic, tradition, and the elimination of evil. Though traditional use of ceremonial objects has become uncommon in the modern era, Punu ceremonies are still practiced and renowned for the acrobatic skills of their masked dancers, who perform on stilts sometimes as tall as the dancer themselves. Okuyi masks such as this one are styled to look like like female ancestors. And almost always bear a traditional nine point, diamond shaped scarification mark, which is said to have a sexual and sensual undertone. Generally pigmented with white, the color of ancestors, there also existed dark, or black faced masks, which were understood to have judiciary powers, and were used to root out sorcerers causing problems within the community. This is one such mask, in very good condition, with the majority of its pigment intact. The mask bears all of the traditional elements of the Okuyi, including the tall, elegant coiffure, and the temple scarification marks near the ears, commonly associated wit

The Chokwe people number over one million in population, have spread over a wide territorial range, from Angola, to the DRC, to Zambia. Both hunters and farmers, the Chokwe people once engaged in the African slave trade, and have a history of large and complex social kingdoms. Known widely for their exceptional artistic talents, the Chokwe(a name for which their are more than thirty different spelling and dialectic variations) are extremely proficient carvers, producing highly elaborate and detailed sculptures, masks, and in their more recent history, quite regal chairs and instruments. Normal.dotm 0 0 1 65 374 Full Sail 3 1 459 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This beautiful example of a Chokwe pwo. Or mwana pwo, theme is sizable. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

Ogoni Articulated Mask- Nigeria Early-Mid 20th Century. Original Wood. Pigment, patina Height 21.5cm( 8.5in) Nicholson Collection. Whitestone, NY, 1950-1965 ... moreSilva Collection. Lindenhurst, NY, 2009, by decent from the above. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. Inhabiting the coastal region of Nigeria. The Ogoni have a reputation for their masks used in cultural, religious and political ceremonies. To understand the dynamics of masking in the coastal region of Nigeria, one must make an important analytical shift, away from imposed categories of style and toward locally named and identified genres of masking. Masking genres are evolving. In any given village group, each genre is well defined, but because each group has a unique history; the array of mask types, mask names, and sponsoring associations often vary greatly from one location to another. The serene Ogoni mask offered here for auction was formerly of the Marta Nicholson Collection of Whitestone. New York. The artifact was collected sometime between the mid 1950s to early 1960s when Nicholson frequently traveled to Nigeria and Cameroon. The mask was later inherited by her nephew(Silva) in 2009. Despite some typical wear and minor loss to the jaw hinge(insect free since the 50’s) the mask is in fine condition. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Reference Elu Face Mask(Accession No. 1989.862) Ogoni People, 1920-1960, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana for a related example. Medium: Timber Carving BAULE(BAOULE. BAWULE) Côte d'Ivoire The Baule people is one of the largest ethnic group in the Côte d'Ivoire. They have played a central role in twentieth-century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. According to a legend. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the ... moreComoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Ivoire between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. It was an egalitarian society. The Baule compact villages are divided into wards. Or quarters, and subdivided into family compounds of rectangular dwellings arranged around a courtyard; the compounds are usually aligned on either side of the main village street. The Baule are agriculturists; yams and maize are the staples, supplemented by fish and game; coffee, cocoa and kola nuts are major cash crops. The importance of the yam is de

THIS IS A RARE AND MAGNIFICENT ITEM. A GAZELLE OR ANTELOPE ON A BASE. ALL CARVED FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD. THE TYPE OF TIMBER IS UNKNOWN. WE EXPECT IT IS AN AFRICAN SPECIES. IT IS VERY HARD AND SMOOTH WITH A FINE GRAIN. THE MAKER SEEMS TO HAVE CHOSEN THIS PARTCIULAR PIECE OF TIMBER BECAUSE THE GRAIN FLOWS WITH THE LINES OF THE ANIMAL.SEE PICTURES. FROM APPEARANCES. WE WOULD ESTIMATE THIS TO HAVE BEEN CARVED SOMTIME AROUND THE 1940's OR 1950's. BUT THAT IS JUST OUR BEST GUESS. WE HAVE OWNED THIS CARVING FOR FIVE YEARS AND DO NOT KNOW IT'S HISTORY. IT IS BEAUTIFUL TO TOUCH AND HAS A LOVELY"PATINA OF AGE" THE BRASS BASE PLATE LOOKS ORIGINAL AND IS ENGRAVED WITH THE WORDS: HANDCRAFTED PATRICE LUMUMBA. BECOMING THE FIRST DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. A BRILLIANT AND CHARISMATIC LEADER. WHO WAS CRUELLY ASSINATED BY COLONIAL FORCES IN 1961. WE TRIED TO FIND OUT IF THIS MAN MAY HAVE CARVED OUR LITTLE GAZELLE. BUT WITH NO SUCCESS. WE DID EMAIL AN AMERICAN SCHOLAR WHO WAS FAMILIAR WITH PATRICE LUMUMBA IN 1960-61 AND THEY SAID HE DID NOT CARVE AND WOULD NOT HAVE ENGRAVED THE PIECE IN THIS WAY. This auction is for a wonderful old dish.Made from an antique African slave bangle. The large heavy bangle is made from white metal/coin silver and would date to the early 19th C.The piece has,at a later date been made into a bowl-with the addition of a handmade copper liner. There are some dents in the bangle-from age and wear but it is very well made and heavily detailed.I hope that you can see this from my photo's. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the ... moreland of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C RARE Antique African Bronze Oil Fertility Figure Oil Burner Yoruba Africa 19 C Please look to Sotheby's Catalogues. Miller's& Carter's price guides for similar This impressive Lost Wax sculptural vessel was made by the Yoruba group of Nigeria. The Yoruba peoples of Nigeria have what is probably the longest extant artistic tradition in Africa. The nation state is comprised of numerous subsections that were joined historically by the rise and collapse of the Ife(12th to 15th centuries) and Benin(13th to 19th centuries) polities. Each of the sub-kingdoms– including Oyo. Ijebu and smaller units towards the west– had their heyday, and are loosely united through language and culture, although they still retain a measure of independence in terms of their ... moreartistic traditions. The Yoruba are sedentary. Agriculturist and hierarchical, and are ruled by hereditary kings known as Obas. Access to the supernatural world is supervised by a very complex arrangement of priests and spiritual intermediaries, who straddle the cosmological border between the tangible realm of the living(aye) and the invisible realm of the spirits and the hereafter(orun) The creator of the world is Olodumare– the source of all ase(life force) and his spiritual minions include all manner of spirits, gods and ancestors who can be appealed to or appeased through human intermediaries. Most Yoruban artistic heritage is designed to thwart evil spirits, and to placate or honour those that bring good fortune to the populace. Without contextual information. The function of this item is uncertain. Given its dimensions, it is likely to have occupied a ritual role, This is an impressive piece of African art. The Babanki Tribe of the Cameroon Grasslands History The Babanki are part of a larger cultural area known collectively as the Western Cameroon Grasslands and live in the northern part of Northwest Province. This is an absolutely beautiful authentic antique South African Xhosa beaded collar or necklace. What makes this piece so rare and collectible is that the beadwork has been sewn onto sinew rather than cotton thread. Which is evidence of its advanced age. A stitch will need to be made to connect up the loop but I will leave this to the purchaser/restorer Otherwise, this piece is in remarkably good condition with very little loss.
