Damage/Repair, large cracks in head. In shoulder, buttocks and in base encrustation worn off in small places, shallow cracks in many other places, Provenance: From an Old Oregon Collection. Additional Information: This classically carved male figure comes from the Bembe. Pre-Bembe or Basikasingo who are today settled in the eastern region of what is known currently as the Democratic Republic of Congo. This sculptural style was for an extended period identified as Bembe in the past. However recent scholarship has given itâs rightful identity as Basikasingo. They are found near Lake Tangyanika and the Lualaba River in a broad area intermixed with a number of other prominent art-producing peoples including the Lega, Bembe and especially the Boyo and Holoholo, with whom they share closely related carving styles. Carved figures known as âMiziâ are kept on family shrines by the Bassikassingo to depict ancestors who are venerated, and are petitioned for good fortune or to prevent or cure illnesses or bring luck to hunters. This well-aged figure demonstrates African carving at its best with great sculptural views from all sides and especially striking when viewed from the side. Masks from the Bembe are relatively few in number and not well known and this is a rare example. Masks such as this represent an owl. An animal associated with evil forces of the forest. This mask was not worn but carried in procession at the end of the initiation into the Kalunga association by new initiates. Associated with nature spirit, Alunga mask, which is a power mask and a hunter brings protection to the initiates. With its original raffia beard. Bembe people shares certain style elements with the Lega. Buyu, Nyindu and other neighbors in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Masks from the Bembe are relatively few in number and not well known and this is a rare example. Masks such as this represent an owl. An animal associated with evil forces of the forest. This mask was not worn but carried in procession at the end of the initiation into the Kalunga association by new initiates. Associated with nature spirit, Alunga mask, which is a power mask and a hunter brings protection to the initiates. The Bembe originate from the northwest forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bembe Art is profoundly religious; its purpose is to maintain contact with the dead. The Bembe statuettes are divided by size and sex. This 11.25 inches statue is a representation of a male Bembe Statue. The figure usually is upright with knees slightly bent and large feet with carefully articulated toes standing on the base. The Bembe had close contacts with their neighbors the Teke, but Kongo contributions were essential to their culture and traditions. Their social organization was based on the matrimonial clan, whose members could live in several villages. The family unit generally included three generations. The chief in charge of the village, the Nga-bula, mediated with the ancestors. Hunting was the main activity; before leaving on a hunt, the leader would invoke the ancestral spirits, using as intermediaries statuettes kneeling in the position of a hunter waiting for his prey. The Bembe believed in a creator god, Nzambi, whom they did not depict figuratively. He was the master of the life and death– unless the latter was due to the act of a sorcerer, Ndoki, who could magically“eat” the life force of clan members. The ancestors had close ties with the living and received offerings through the“priest, who made appeals to statuettes, the kitebi or bimbi, consecrated by the sorcerer. These

Additional Information: This classically carved male figure comes from the Bembe. Pre-Bembe or Basikasingo who are today settled in the eastern region of what is known currently as the Democratic Republic of Congo. This sculptural style was for an extended period identified as Bembe in the past. However recent scholarship has given itâs rightful identity as Basikasingo. They are found near Lake Tangyanika and the Lualaba River in a broad area intermixed with a number of other prominent art-producing peoples including the Lega, Bembe and especially the Boyo and Holoholo, with whom they share closely related carving styles. Carved figures known as âMiziâ are kept on family shrines by the Bassikassingo to depict ancestors who are venerated, and are petitioned for good fortune or to prevent or cure illnesses or bring luck to hunters. Congo: Lare Rare Tribal used African Bembe fortuneteller figure. Bembe figures mainly serves healing and protective purposes. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 32 cm. The Bembe form a small group of 60 to 80.000 people; they live on the plateaus situated to the north of the Zaire River, as well as on the shores of Stanley Pool and in the cities of Brazzaville, Dolisie, and Pointe-Noire. The Bembe had close contacts with their neighbors the Teke, but Kongo contributions were essential to their culture and traditions. Their social organization was based on the matrimonial clan, whose members could live in several villages. The family unit generally included three generations. The chief in charge of the village, the nga-bula. Mediated with the ancestors. Hunting was the main activity; before leaving on a hunt, ... morethe leader would invoke the ancestral spirits, using as intermediaries statuettes kneeling in the position of a hunter waiting for his prey. The Bembe believed in a creator god, Nzambi, whom they did not depict figuratively. He was the master of the life and death– unless the latter was due to the act of a sorcerer, ndoki. Who could magically“eat” the life force of clan members. The ancestors had close ties with the living and received offerings through the“priest, who made appeals to statuettes, the kitebi or bimbi. Consecrated by the sorcerer. These figurines were the idealized images of the ancestors and would often wear attributes that allowed them to be identified as medicine men or hunters. The ancestor worship among the Bembe is older, though, and precedes the use of magic statues, nkisi. By the sorcerers. Bembe art is profoundly religious; its purpose is to maintain contact with the dead. The art is quite original. Consisting mainly of minutely carved ancestral figures that can be identified by extensive scarification on the abdomen. This is a rare. Unusual sculpture from the Bembe. A tribe from the Southern part of Congo Brazzaville and also found in the DRC. Bembe are actually associated to the Kongo people(a large group spread over the Congo delta, through Angola– this tribe is not to be confused with the Bembe tribe who lives in the Eastern part of DRC) Bembe sculpture is known for its representation of ancestors’ figures– of which two styles are known. The Western style represented here is recognizable by the columnar torso and flat shoulders. The piece is a rare example of a couple holding a cup. Both the male and the female show the typical elongated face with a carved hairdo. The face is angular. Expressive– with small round ears, a small pointy nose, eyes made of bone or shell, a wide open mouth. The shoulders are square with bent arms holding a cup. THIS ITEM IS AN IMPORTANT VINTAGE BEMBE MASK FROM THE STANLEY POOL AREA OF THE BELGIAN CONGO WITH WHAT I THINK IS ORIGINAL RAFFIA. THE WOODEN PORTION IS ABOUT 16" TALL. IF THE RAFFIA IS NOT ORIGINAL. IT IS AT LEAST 60 YEARS OLD, AND THE MASK MUST BE HANDLED CAREFULLY BECAUSE THE RAFFIA IS DRY. CARE WILL BE TAKEN TO PROTECT THE RAFFIA WHEN THE ITEM IS PACKED THIS PIECE, AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHERS, WERE SOLD INDIVIDUALLY AT AN AUCTION IN HOUSTON IN THE MID 80'S AS THE ESTATE/COLLECTION OF CARL C. PROVOST. MR. PROVOST COLLECTED THEM IN THE EARLY 1950'S-HE WAS IN THE CONSULAR SERVICE OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT, AND WAS STATIONED IN WEST AFRICA AT THIS TIME-HE TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY FROM THE THEN BELGIAN CONGO TO THE SAHEL, AND WEST TO LIBERIA, BUYING OLD MASKS AND OTHER ITEMS.
