These helmet-shaped"baba" masks are traditionally woven by Abelam men(villages are near the Prince Alexander Hills) They symbolize the otherworldly spirits and are used in male initiation and yam harvest ceremonies whereby the masks are either newly woven or repainted and donned for the ceremonial dances.
