This is an absolutely stunning Makonde Mapiko Mask which we picked up during the second half of 2012 in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. It ... moreis an authentic ritual item which shows signs of considerable ritual use. And measures nearly 12 inches square or 12 inches x 12 inches. This mask is a highly collectible piece due to its authenticity. There is an age crack on the left side of the mask which looks to have been repaired 25 to 30 years ago. The mask is structurally sound. Yet well-weathered. It is between 40 and 50 years old which qualifies it as a bona fide antique. Note: This is not a reproduction. Nor a piece which was fabricated for the purpose of resale. This is an actual ceremonial mask used in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique for ritual and ethno-spiritual purposes. Mapiko Masks are used during a tribal celebration which involve large numbers of the Konde People(Makonde) The initiates become figures of fear when they don these special and frightening masks. The Mapiko ceremony of the Makonde can be seen in Northern Mozambique and Southern Tanzania. Throughout Tanzania the Southern Tanzanians and Northern Mozambicans are feared and respected for their magical powers. In Swahili the local magic men or bush doctors who possess special powers are referred to as M'ganga(singular) or W'ganga(plural) Standard or Economy Shipping w/in Continental US for a $25 Flat Rate. The Lipico masks show a wide range of Makonde life and society as they depict initiates. Villagers, coastal Arabs and colonial officials. Makonde will embellish their masks with human hair and beards, insert pegs for teeth, will whiten the eyes and in a quest for realism often show human deformities. In some cases There will be elaborate scarification on the face. Such scarification was done as a part of initiation ceremonies, and also when a ranking member of society assumed a more important political status or social level. Makonde masks were worn on top of the head. Sometimes they have a lip plug. Which Makonde men used to wear. The wood is njala wood. Info about Makonde and Tree of Life(Ujamaa) ... moreThe Makonde reside in the Mueda Plateau stretching from southeast Tanzania to northern Mozambique. Separated by the Rovuma River. Today, they live in various parts of Tanzania, Mozambique and Kenya. Although the Makonde of Tanzania are Muslim and those of Mozambique are either Catholic or Muslim, the society was traditionally matrilineal. This means that husbands had to move to the villages of their wives and the offspring of couples belonged to the mothers. The Makonde are noted for their exceptional wood carvings in African blackwood. Or mpingo. The most notable carving theme is"Tree of Life" or"people poles. These intricate carvings reference ujamaa, brotherhood, cooperation, family, and togetherness, depict a column of intertwined human figures, often appearing as though locked in dance. The idea is that from one block of wood comes the unity of the family, society and ancestors. The older generation is depicted on the bottom, supporting(literally and symbolically) later generations. The central figure is usually a mother surrounded by many clinging children. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a woman was the first

++ MAKONDE Carved Statue ++ African SPIRIT ++ Mischievous SHETANI & Elephant ++
Here is another genuine Shetani carving I found among my stuff. Similar to my other carving currently up for auction. Let's start this one low and see where it goes as it has slightly less detail(no toes on the foot of the leg it is eating. This forest Shetani is having fun with an elephant(perhaps explaining why they lift their trunks as the Shetani forest spirit is of course invisible in the Makonde reality. It is also munching on a human leg(must have eaten the rest of the poor villager earlier. No damage. No repairs, solid one piece original carving. Elephant has bone or horn tusks. Carved in ebony wood by the Makonde tribe in Malawi. Neighbor to Tanzania. Note the color variation in the natural ebony. Beautiful natural hardwood(so hard in fact, that it is impervious to any bugs. about 9" in height. A most interesting piece- ... moreshowing the importance of spirits in Makonde life!

TANZANIAN MODERN MAKONDE SCULPTURE TEAKWOOD VINTAGE
I have kept one of the two of the Makonde sculptures. I really like these. Makonde reflects family, life tribal customs. This particular sculpture, Modern, depicts a family I think I counted 10. Its hard as they are so cojoined and I tried not to double. This is solid heavy teakwood and dates from my travels in the 1970's, so is vintage, not brand new, but not antique. The light spots are in the wood grain, not damage. Stands approx 8 1/2" high. This theme has its roots in the creation myth of the Makonde, in which a woman was the first human ancestor. The Tree of Life” are the works that brought the Makonde their fame. Some can be as tall as

EBONY IS AN EXTREMELY HARD AND DENSE WOOD THAT DISPLAYS A BEAUTIFUL LUSTRE ONCE POLISHED. African ebony wood is an exceptionally dense and beautiful wood found only in the Sahara desert regions of Africa. Its exceptional density not only makes it very heavy. But also gives it an incomparable sheen when polished. Ebony heartwood is one of the most intensely black woods known, it also has a very high density(it is one of the very few woods that sink in water) African ebony wood has a fine texture and ability to polish very smoothly, ... morewhich has made it very valuable as an ornamental wood. Because of the high value and heaviness of this wood, only the master carvers of Africa are able to use it for their craft. The carvers use simple hand tools to produce the works of art. In ancient days, the royalty of Persia and India would travel to West Africa to find ebony wood to use for scepters, sculptures and drinking chalices. Ebony wood has a long history of use with carved pieces having been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. The word“ebony” derives from the ancient Egyptian culture. Ebony normally is brown on the outside of the tree, and black on the inside. Each piece has its own special beauty. African Makonde wooden Spirit carving! Masterpiece! Shetani Ebony Sculpture
Spectacular piece of Makonde Art! Spirit Carving at it's best! It's carved of Ebony. Also called iron wood- solid and very heavy, Weight: 5.1 kg! It's very difficult to describe- the sculpture shows a huge face with big teeth. Another sculpture/creature on the bottom and a fish an the left side. Have a close look at the pictures, they speak for themselves. it's remarkably well and highly detailed carved- so much work and time was put into this. Originating in Africa I have used the flash in images 4 and 8 so the wood looks slightly lighter than it actually is. Measurements approx: 18" tall. 12" wide and 8" wide(45 cm x 31 cm x 21 cm) Note to international buyers(other than US) Please contact me for the exact costs for shipping. Due to it's size and weight. It's quite expensive, e.g. shipping to Australia ... moreor Germany or UK- would cost between $190- 250 CAD(Air, incl. tracking)

BACKGROUND Inhabiting the southeast of Tanzania and the northeast of Mozambique are about 500.000 Makonde, divided into matrilineal clans, each one comprising several villages. Clan members meet only for the ancestral cult and to celebrate initiations. The Makonde believe in a world of ancestor spirits and in malevolent spirits who make an appearance during the ceremonies that close initiation rites. According to legend, shortly after the Creation, the first man, wandering around outside the bush, sculpted a female figure out of wood, and the statue became a real woman who gave him many children and, after her death, became the venerated ancestress of the Makonde. This accounts for the ancestress cult as well as the profusion of sculpted female figures, kept in huts. During this intensive months-long ritual, girls and boys were provided with knowledge and skills essential to the Makonde way of life. The Makonde practice of carving protective ancestor figures predates the colonial era. Painter Fred Uhlman words- Most of the artists I admired. Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been pro
