A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, ... morefur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Kuba peoples call themselves“children of Woot” in honor of their founder. Kuba art is characterized by its use of geometric patterns and cowrie shells. Three types of mask have been associated with dances that take place within the royal compound. The first. Called Mwaashamboy represents Woot. Founder of the Bushoong tribe. The second, known as Ngaady Amwaash. Personifies Woot‘s incestuous sister-wife. The third mask, the Bwoom. Represents a pygmy and is associated with Woot‘s evil brother. This mask. Ngaady Amwaash portrays Mweel. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents women in general. The mask is striking with its strong pattern of white and black triangles painted on the face, which are said to represent hearthstones and domesticity. Lines painted down the cheeks represent tears and recall the pain of death, for royal masks often appear in funerary contexts. The tears also denote the hardship of a woman's life as a"pawn" of male authority befitting the mask's name(Ngaady aMwaash) which means"pawn woman of Mwaash, her husband/brother king. The Ngaady Amwaash and Moshambwooy masks dance together on ceremonial occasions with great dignity and pride“ University of Virginia. African Masks Signs of use. H: 48 cm(19 inch) Provenance: L. You are bidding on this Kuba Royal prestige cap from the Dem. Rep. of Congo. Formerly Zaire. This cap is woven from rafia vegetable fibers. Among the ... moreKuba, a highly developed culture in south central Congo, these caps are known generically as laket. They are worn by nobles and princes as a symbol of their high rank. This cap is of unknown age and has some wear on two places as seen in the photos. I have collected a lot of treasures through my travels over the years and have recently downsized my home and need to thin out the treasures. I lived in Africa(Zaire. Belgian Congo, Dem Rep of Congo) for four years in the late 70’s early 80’s and picked up a lot of things from there as well. I currently live in the southwest USA and have collected a number of things from this area. If you don’t see what you are looking for drop me line, I might have it. I have bought a lot of things on Ebay and know what I like in a vendor and what I appreciate as someone buying on Ebay. This is my first effort to sell on Ebay and I will do my best to treat YOU as I like to be treated when making a transaction. Please ask questions or make an offer and be patient with me.

29 x 13 x 15 inches This stunning wooden trunk is from the Kuba area of the Congo. Africa. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Postal charges vary considerably with larger items and I can then get an accurate quote for you. You might find it a lot cheaper!

Rare Kuba Cup, DR Congo, early 20th Century
The art of the Kuba is one of the most highly developed of all African traditions. And significant cultural accomplishments are part of Kuba heritage. The Kubas are known for their raffia embroidered textiles. Fiber, beaded hats, carved palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes. The cups were prestige items to the Kuba who used them for drinking palm wine. This kuba cup measures 8 inches tall and 51/2 inches wide and is hand-carved out of wood. The faces are not intended as portraits of specific individuals. Although they convey important information about identity. The face of this piece is quite expressive which makes it unique compared to other Kuba cups. The hairline shown on this head is quintessentially Kuba. It is a style that was worn by men and women in the 19th and early 20th centuries by shaving a straight hairline with a curved or chiseled ... moreangle at the temples. This is a museum quality piece! The safest hedge against inflation is buying the right art at time time* AAPAP Posted with the

DR Congo African Art Additional Information: The skill and creativity of Kuba artists is known and ... moreappreciated worldwide. An ancient culture. Located in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Kuba migrated during the 16th century from the north to their current homelands along the Sankuru River. The arts of the Kuba are known for their elaborate decoration and range of materials. Most famous for their monumental helmet masks, royal figures, and exquisite and stunning fabrics, the Kuba are also famous for their smaller, carved prestige objects where their true genius can be best appreciated. The palm wine cups and the lidded boxes, with their proud, strong faces and remarkable and mythological significant geometric designs, are of a great beauty. The boxes, with their many shapes and designs, are justifiably famous. They are also one of the few remaining links to the ancient Kuba. Cylindrical box like this owe their shape to basketry containers. Such boxes are known as Lukata and were used to store red"tukula" powder( twool) that was ritually essential and thus highly-prized. This red powder was applied to the body prior to important ceremonies like funerals. And also mixed with other pigments to dye raffia cloth, another singular Kuba creation.

A Fine Ngaady Amwaash - Kete Kuba - Congo - FINE PROVENANCE
A Fine Ngaady Amwaash/ Kete. Kuba, Congo- FINE PROVENANCE Wood. Fine patina, white kaolin, remains of pigments, cowrie shells. Hammered coper, beads, fur, large bell-shaped mask, hallowed eyes with one small see slit, geometric patterns. Woot's beautiful sister and wife(alternatively, mother) and who represents ... morewomen in general. Kuba Royal Mask Bwoom DR Congo African
Title, Kuba Royal Mask M'Boom DR Congo Africa, Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Kuba-Bushoong, Materials, Wood. Hide, cooper alloy, beads, cowrie shells, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 13 inches. Width is 7 inches. Depth is 13.5 inches. Overall Condition, Good Damage/Repair, wear. Chips in places, rusting metal, dents, Additional Information: A wonderful example of one of the three accepted Kuba"royal" masks. Featuring exquisite geometric decoration. Intricate woven fringes with cowries and beads. This is beautiful example with adorned beaded face. This ia a royal mask known as Bwoom recognized by the bulging forehead the exaggerate nose, the mask would have been difficult to categorize. This is probably due to the diverse stylistic elements found throughout Kuba territory, ... moreas the mask has features more commonly found among the Kuba sub-groups. Bwoom" represents the evil brother in ceremonial reenactments of Kuba mythology, as well as the inevitable struggle for power among individuals. In these dances, Bwoom seeks both the mythical throne of his brother, Mwaash A Mboy, as well as the king's wife, Ngaady A Mwaash. Bwoom, a pygmy, symbolically speaks for the common man, with all the temptation and folly that entails. This colorful trio of characters comprises the recognized pantheon of the royal helmet masks, which are eagerly sought-after by collectors and museums. See SCULPTURE AFRICAINE, by Fagg. This mask has a bulbous forehead and an underslung jaw. Copper ornaments the forehead. Raffia headdress and beard are embroidered with cowries. And beads are found on nose, forehead, lips, and back of headdress. The raffia is hand-woven. This mask has a lot of presence and would stand out in any collection. Attached to the end of the trunk is raffia fibers, which can be replaced by a bright red, tuft of parrot feathers. Moshambwooy is usually topped with a high structure decorated with feathers. There is no elephant tusk-like on moshambwooy(see examples on Face of Spirits) The greatest of the three"most significant" masks of the BaKuba. Damage/Repair, worn patina. Scrapes, chips. Kuba Face Mask. Wood, DR Congo, African Additional Information: This face mask is attributed to the Kuba and shows some similarities with the Leele people. Masks made ... moreby the Leele differ somewhat from the Kuba masks. Kuba masks are heavily decorated with bead and have bold traits. On this mask, the hairline, the form of the eyes. Nose, and mouth are of Kuba. The large carved beard around the mask is unusual. The general form recalls some Leele masks. Usually, such face masks would be completed by an impressive headdress and the beard would be decorated with cowrie shells and beads. Kuba masks represent nature spirits and are worn at the initiation of princes. At funerals of chiefs and elders, and during annual festivals which commemorate the founding of the nation. KUBA AFRICAN ART SHOOWA CLOTH #1979 - For African Art Gallery
KUBA SHOOWA TEXTILE#1979 Tribe: Kuba- Shoowa. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Raffia Palm. Size: 27" 68.6 cm) x 18.5" 47 cm) Item: 1979 Condition: Good. Note: Ex. James E. Adkins Collection- Florida. USA. The basic material used in weaving panels of Kuba fabric is the fibre of the raffia palm(raphia vinifera) Which grows throughout the region. The outer layer of the young, plumelike leaves is split(frayed) and the fibres drawn. They may need to be twisted together and beaten to provide the threads used in the textiles. Weaving is the exclusive preserve of men, who work sitting at sloping looms. The finer the fibre, the stronger and tighter the woven fabric will be. The size of the woven panels is determined by the natural length of the raffia fibre; the individual fibres are not artificially lengthened. Hence. Panels ... moreusually measure between about 50 x 60 cm and a maximum of 100 x 100 cm. The cloths are soaked. Kneaded and beaten to make them soft and supple. The basic reddish tone of the velvet is obtained by dyeing the untreated fabric using a powder made from red wood. Yellow ochre background colours are more common, however. The cloths are embroidered by women. The technique of cut-pile embroidery consists of passing threads between the warp and weft threads with a needle. Without any visible stitches or knots. The threads are then cut to leave a pile of about 2mm on either side, with the velvet fibres are secured in the middle only by the tightness of the underlying weave. The Shoowa are real masters of this technique, which demands a great deal of skill. An enormous amount of work is involved in making a raffia cut-pile panel. It is a process that can take between several months and more than a year. So it is not surprising that cut-pile"velvet" cloths are treasured as objects of value. For embroidery incorporating more than one colour(a technique found almost exclusively among the Shoowa) The raffia fibres are coloured with plant dyes before embroidering. The roots of tr

Abstract art, meanwhile, has remained marginal. The textiles of the BaKuba(Kuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo are an exception. Additional Information: The BaKuba of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Formerly Zaire, are known for their exquisite raffia woven textiles, carved wooden palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes in interesting shapes, and masks reflecting their elaborate mythology. Bark cloth is known as ISHYEEN among the Kuba. The bark is obtained from a particular tree. After removal the bark is soaked in water until it is soft enough to be worked. Using ivory or wooden pounders one or more men beat the bark against a smooth horizontal tree trunk to expand it and make it softer. Once the bark is dried, the women will apply patterns on the bark by using black dye from the juice of the gardenia seed. Vansina's CHILDREN OF WOOT is a fascinating book about them. Beautiful Antique Kuba Kete Ishyeen Imaalu Royal Mask - Congo / DRC
This is a beautiful antique Kuba royal mask. The Kuba is a large tribe from the Kasai region in Southern DRC; it is. In fact, composed of a cluster of tribes(Bushoong, Ngeende, Shoowa, etc. which each represent a different historic subgroup and each had a representative at the court of the Kuba king. The Kuba Kingdom produces a vast array of objects- both for court and rituals. Three main types of mask are known– although great variations exist among subgroups. The piece here is known as Ishyeen Imaalu– a mask from Northern Kuba territory used in initiation rites. As well as for funerals. It shows the striking features of Kuba masks, including a pointy forehead, a large, stylized nose, and protruding eyes. The cut here is very sharp making for a powerful looking mask. It is covered with black, red and white pigments in geometrical motives, ... moretypical of the Kuba. The inside of the mask also shows a nice patina from use and it has its complete hairdo, made of fabric, beads and feathers. Dimensions are 15x7x11.
Vintage Set of 4 Porcelain Plates by Kuba Porzellan Bavaria Germany
Offered for your consideration… ˜ Set of 4 Porcelain Decorative Plates ™ by Kuba Porzellan. Bavaria, Germany Add this charming set to your collection! Ì Description: This auction is for a set of four decorative porcelain plates by the German company Kuba Porzellan. Each plate depicts a different scene of children interacting with each other. To me. These children look as if they are intended to be rural peasant children. In any case they are all delightfully charming. These plates have holes in the back for hanging. Or may be displayed on stands. They each measure approximately 7¾” in diameter. This set would make a wonderful gift for a person who appreciates beautiful things… who might very well be you yourself! Marks: The bottom of each plate is marked Kuba Porzellan. Bavaria, Germany. One plate is additionally marked with an“A” ... moreAnother with a“C” another with a“D” and one has no letter at all. Condition: This set is in very good to excellent vintage condition. I can find no significant cracks. Chips, or repairs. One plate has a short hairline crack near the rim(too light to come out in photos although I did try) And there are a few scratches on the paint– they should be clear if you enlarge the photos. These issues are. I believe, consistent with age. One additional issue is that on one plate. Near the edge where the girl’s pink wrap rests on a rock, there is a bit of what I believe to be adhesive from tape. In all. None of these things keep the plates from making a wonderful presentation. Please be sure to look carefully at every photo as they are an integral part of the description. Please note that the shipping price includes insurance. For the protection of us both* Thank you very much for considering adding this item to your collection! Terms The most important thing to me in doing this work is your satisfaction with the goods and services you’ve received from me. For this reason. I request that you read the terms set out below… if we understand and respect each other, we are certain to h

ANTIQUE AFRICAN KUBA WARRIORS SWORD - rare !/ no saber, dagger ,knife, bayonet
Few African cultures can boast a history as long and as proud as the Kuba who live along the Snakuru River. Their history parallels Great Zimbabwe at its founding and grew along with the Benin. Kuba Chief Shamba-Bolongongo(1600-20) visited Benin and introduced the iconic Kuba knife ikula. Which was subsequently represented in Benin sculpture. The Kuba prospered in a society which valued material things and ordinary objects, particularly those associated with the Royal Court, were made to the highest standard. Their geographic location and the ferocity of their warriors made them virtually free from the predation of slavers. Classic form as introduced in the 17th century. 9 3/4” wasp waisted blade with offset edges flanking finely chiseled line work bands. Thick tapered raised medial. Carved wood hilt with expanded hat form pommel and flared ... morebase seating the blade.

Whispering Pines, NC. Field collected in Zaire, early 20th cenury. Dr. Carlton W. Helen Moore Collection. Waldorf, MD. Fayetteville Museum of Art. Fayetteville, NC, 2001. Deaccessioned and sold to fund construction of the new museum in Festival Park. Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Biombo have been strongly influenced politically and culturally by their Kuba neighbors to the north. Describing an near identical mask form. The Bowers Museum Collections Department notes“within the Kasai province in central Democratic Republic of Congo are a number of very small, sometimes ancient ... moretribes who have retained their individuality. Among them are the Bena Biombo who are best known for their masks of diverse type. This mask with half-closed eyes and arched eyebrows radiates a peaceful, benevolent air. The incised geometric designs across the cheeks and chin indicate tribal scarifications. Although Bena Biombo masks resemble those neighboring tribes, the three appendages on top of the head identify this mask as originating with the Bena Biombo. Feathers are attached to the top of the mask when it is worn. A woven support of reed encases the back of the mask to provide a secure fit for the wearer's head and ruffled grass extends from the back of the meshed reed around to the front of the mask. Although masks of this type may have served other religious and ceremonial purposes at an earlier date, today they are used primarily for entertainment and masquerades(Bena Biombo Mask, 2007) The extraordinary Biombo helmet mask we have up for auction was formerly in the Lewis Pate. Dr. Carlton and Helen Moore Collection. The Pate& Moore Collection was generously donated to Fayetteville Museum of Art in 2001. Founded in 1972, the Fayetteville Museum of Art move

Dyes, Approximate Age, contemporary, Dimensions, 148" x 23" Overall Condition, good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, none, We do not recommend laundering textiles. And do not accept returns of textiles which have been laundered in any manner. ... moreEven dry cleaning is too much for some of these antique textiles. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: A superb woman's skirt appliqed from the Kuba. This large raffia skirt is a multi-panel skirt that was worn wrapped multiple times around the waist. By the Kuba women in the Kuba Kingdom, which is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. This is a great piece of textile made by both men and women. Men did the weaving, women did the dying and embroidery. Raffia, which comes from the raffia palm tree, is notoriously difficult to work with. Soaking and pounding were both used to soften the fibers. Each piece took months to make. Matisse was hugely influenced by these textiles, and had a number of them in his bedroom! 26" SQUARE HEAVY WEIGHT, PLUSH GRASS VELVET KUBA CLOTH
KUBA ZAIRE PRESTIGE CLOTH"In the past. Kuba cloths of cut pile were prestige items, rarely worn but used as signs of wealth during life and at death. To make one could take up to a year. African Kuba cloth velvet bakuba raffia Africa v403
SquareTrade © AP6.0 New Handmade Authentic African Kuba Cloth Velvet or Embroidery approximate average 20 x 24 inches Kuba cloth is an amazing creation of the Kuba or Bakuba peoples of Africa. It is one of the very few fabrics which is still completely made by hand and of natural materials! The Kuba people love design and ornamentation. And decorate even everyday objects with fantastic patterns. Their cloth is perhaps their crowning achievement. Kuba cloth is a true labor of love. It is woven from raffia strands which are collected and prepared usually by men or boys. It is also the males who weave the fibers into a basic fabric called"mbal. Since the raffia fibers are not connected to lengthen them. The base cloth is never very large or long, though individual pieces, once woven, may be connected. Before the decorating, women dampen ... moreand beat the cloth repeatedly until it reaches the correct firmness or softness. If the mbal needs to be dyed. It is. Dyes come from Tukula wood, clay, iron dross, indigo, and other plants. Then women begin the patterns. They may applique shapes cut from other cloths to form larger patterns. They may be embroidered with dyed raffia threads. Sections may be combined to form a patchwork look. Or any of these methods may be combined with the others. These are all usually found on the longer pieces termed skirts. The smaller pieces termed velvets are created by a combination of embroidery and a cut pile technique. Some designs are stitched onto the cloth. But for fill. An artist will pull several strands through the base cloth with a needle, then cut them, creating a natural pile with a knife. The fibers are not tied, but simply held in place by the tightness of the weave of the base cloth. The back of the piece usually bears no signs of the embroidery. What may be the most amazing fact of all. Is that the artist never sketches her designs ahead of time! She works from images in her mind, many times patterns that have been passed down for generations. They also usually have nam
