Chokwe Ancestor Figure, Angola
Chokwe sculptors were the most famous of the region; there were two types. The songi made jinga charms. The small mahamba figures for the family shrines. And all objects used for hunting, love, magic, and fertility. In addition to the folk art. Somewhat rigid and giving no illusion of depth, there existed also the ancient refined culture of the court, expressed with conviction by professional artists the fuli. They were hired by the great chieftainries and worked exclusively for the court. They sculpted scepters. Thrones with figurines, fans, tobacco boxes, pipes, flyswats, cups, and figures of chiefs or ancestors– all demonstrating a great deal of refinement. They were famous for their large statues of deified ancestors, exalting strength and dignity. The best-known representation of a chief is of Chibinda Ilunga. He was a wandering hunter, ... moreyoungest son of the great Luba chief Kalala Ilunga. He got married a Lunda queen Lueji. Chibinda Ilunga was the start of the sacred dynasty of the Mwata Yamvo of the Lunda and became the model of the hunting and civilizing hero, sometimes represented seated on a throne, sometimes as standing naked or dressed as a hunter. As statues of him were sculpted after the introduction of firearms, generally the standing figure is holding a stone rifle in his left hand and a stick, called cisokolu. In his right. Chibinda Ilunga’s body is stocky, with legs bent, shoulder blades clearly drawn, the neck wide and powerful, the navel protruding. He wears an enormous hairdo, the sign of princely rank. The social organization, founded upon matrilineal lineages, has an equally large number of female statues, whether these be identified as the queen mother or a chief’s wife. This outstanding figure has an incredible patina, measuring 9" at length by 4 1/2" at width. Secured on a beautiful red oak finished wood.

JOKWE CHOKWE MWANA PWO PWEVO AFRICAN MASK ANGOLA
CHOKWE JOKWE MWANA PWO PWEVO AFRICAN MASK ANGOLA Mask measures approximately 9 inches tall x 7 inches wide. I have seen similar masks referred to as Mwana Pwo or Mwana Pwevo and discovered that means a younger. Potential woman while Pwo or Pwevo alone refers to a fulfilled woman. Although both names appear to be used. Masks with few or no scarification details are more often said to represent the younger woman. Pwo is an archetype of womanhood. An ancestral female personage who encourages fertility. As an ancestor, she is envisioned as an elderly woman. According to Chokwe belief. Ancestral spirits play the crucial role of providing for living descendants. The ancestral characters also protect the peoples from intruders or evil supernatural elements. This handcrafted. Wooden mask has well defined and expressive facial features as well as ... morea wonderful worn patina to the wood. In back. There is a skull cap attached to the mask with a crude metal frame covered with some type of fabric. The hair is almost rope-like and appears to be made of either animal hair or natural fiber. This mask was acquired by a relative during his travels throughout Africa many years ago so I believe it to be old and authentic although he left no history with it. I have done my best to research and identify the origins of this mask and have listed it as such based on that research. This mask is a unique. Handcrafted work of art and therefore may show imperfections, scratches, chips, holes or cracks from natural age or use. Please look closely at the pictures to view actual condition. Chokwe Angola Snuff Mortar Figure Ironwood Central Africa 19th Century AntiqueSB
Chokwe Angola Snuff Mortar Figure Ironwood Central Africa 19th Century AntiqueSB Location: Jewelry Case Materials: Ironwood Measurement: Approx 6" High x 2 1/4" Wide Condition: Very Good Vintage Attributes: This little man is a snuff mortar. Hand crafted in Angola, Africa ca. 1860's. He is made of ironwood, prized for its ability to withstand years of wear and tear, stained a dark espresso brown. He appears to be wearing a tribal hat and long robe. His face is painted in the style of a ceremonial mask. On the top of his head is a small round indentation, which is the well into which snuff is placed to be ground. He stands on a rectangular metal stand. His left foot is missing, I believe it broke off many years ago, as the surface of the wood at that area is not fresh. There is also a longitudinal crack on his right front which ... moredoes not detract from the overall design or appearance of the piece. We can tell that he was used throughout the years, there are marks of wear in the snuff well. This is an intriguing piece of African art, a perfect gift for the collector of Africana or of articles used to process and deliver snuff. SB Please. CHOKWE- MUPALA CEREMONIAL MASK - ANGOLA # 11215
CHOKWE- MUPALA CEREMONIAL MASK- ANGOLA# 11215 The Chokwe and related peoples(Mbunda. Lunda, Lovale, Lwena) of Angola and western Zambia create and perform many masked characters. These masked characters represent the spirits of deceased ancestors who have returned to the world of the living to guide, assist, protect, and even educate members of the community. They mostly perform in conjunction with the mukanda initiation process where they also protect the initiation camp from intruders and evil supernatural forces. These masks may also be seen at other important ceremonies, political rallies and confirmation ceremonies of chiefs. Mupala plays a crucial role during the mukanda process. He carries away the young boys to be circumcised. He is a fearsome and aggressive character. Damage/Repair, cracks in base repaired with glue. Shallow cracks in places, some oxidation on metal, chips, scratches, ... morewear. Slightly bent. But stands well. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. This carving has it's own character and presence and would well be a good addition to include in a collection. Recommended Reading: Jordan. M. Normal.dotm 0 0 1 65 374 Full Sail 3 1 459 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This beautiful example of a Chokwe pwo. Or mwana pwo, theme is sizable. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

Info about Chokwe people: The Chokwe also pronounced Tchokwe are an ethnic group of Central Africa whose ancestry can perhaps be traced to Mbundu and Mbuti Pygmies. Large groups of Chokwe currently reside in Angola. Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their language is usually referred to as Chokwe, a Bantu language. Many also speak the official languages of their countries: English in Zambia, French in Democratic Republic of Congo, and Portuguese(as first or second language) in Angola. The Chokwe were once one of the twelve clans of the great Lunda Empire of 17th- and 18th-century Angola. They eventually became independent when they refused to continue paying tribute to the Lunda emperor. Their successful trading and abundant resources caused them to be one of the wealthiest groups in Angola. By 1900 the Chokwe had dismantled the Lunda kingdom altogether. Using guns they had received in trade from the Ovimbundu. Chokwe language and influence then began to dominate northeastern Angola and spread among the Lunda peoples. The Portuguese had virtually no contact with the Chokwe until the 1930s when the Chokwe

Old African Chokwe Pwo Mask with Provenance
Old African Chokwe Pwo Mask with Provenance This is a Chokwe Pwo mask. Dating to the first half of the 20th century. It has an old collector's label attached. I bought this and another mask, which I also have listed on eBay this week, from a house clearance dealer in Cheltenham. All I know about'Mr Robson' is that he worked as an administrator in various parts of Africa from the 1930s, until he retired to Cheltenham in the 1950s. He collected various curios for his own collection, so it is likely that this mask was old at the time. It measures 10" from forehead to chin x 6" across and has hair and woven mesh made from natural vegetable matter. There are a few old holes in the mesh, but it is in otherwise good condition with good patina and colour. There is no reserve price on this item. Please email me for more information ... moreor photos or the cost of postage from the UK. I will accept payment in Pound Sterling. International money orders, banker's drafts and Paypal. I will accept cheques from the UK only. Please see my other auctions for more interesting items. Another auction from Peter Maw Antiques. You may be interested in on eBay. Powered by
