On offer is an old Asmat figure. Approx 20 inches tall. Gorgeous profile! Iron hardwood from an old Dutch collection with old oxidized label on back of neck. Then American collection based. There are scarifications all over and nice treatment to the back with scapula exposed and negative space under the genitalia. Some slight areas of encrustation on figure. Note the feet may have been attached to a base? thats now gone, tip of feet show oxidized old breaks. The wood is traditional for Asmat figures in the 20th. No restorations or repairs all photos are shown in detail, we are not experts in this region, just going by the notes given to us by the collector. This is an elaborate miniature pirogue from the Asmat wood carvers of the south coast of Papua New Guinea. Indonesia. It is 55 inches in length. It is 4 1/2 inches wide. The boat part of the pirogue is 27 inches long. This pirogue is intricately carved from end to end, in typical Asmat design. This is a fabulous example of Asmat art work. and a terrific artifact from the Asmat tribe. The hard wood is typical from the south coast, where the Asmat people live.

Unusual Old Asmat Ritual Bowl Decorated with Human Figures
A very unusual old Asmat bowl carved of brown hardwood. The shallow oval bowl is flanked at either end by human figures holding staffs and standing on human heads. There are also 2 joined human heads carved in high relief in the center of the bowl. The back and sides of the bowl are carved with abstract designs painted with red and white pigment. The bowl is 28" long and 6" wide at the center. It is mounted on a custom metal stand. It is in perfect co ndition and sold with a 14 day return privilege. The object is covered with a grayish encrustation. But underneath you can see a beautiful smooth patina from use and age. see pictures.
